I am wanting to look into trying out the trial of DDO I have played the pen and pencil version of D&D for quite a while and I am curious to see what the online version is like a lot of my friends have tried to sway me away from trying it out but I really want to try it out  if you can give me just a list of pros and cons and then I think i will try it out myself for a lil while.

also if I could maybe get some character names of you all, so I can have people on the game to team up with and play with when I go online that would be great to

Thanks

Always best to make your own mind up and with a free trial you have nothing to lose.

Pros

  • D&D 3.5 and all the rich possibility of character builds that go with it
  • Enhancement system that adds even more variety to possible builds and quasi-prestige classes
  • Twitch combat, you don't need to target you enemies just be near them, no click and forget combat
  • Projectiles work properly so you can use scenery to manually dodge arrows, or step in the way and take a shot aimed at a friend
  • Each quest is a handcrafted instance for your group of up to 6 players (12 raids). No go fetch x skins, kill y monster type quests. More the feel of friends around a table playing a PnP module
  • Quests with traps, ambushes, scripted events, puzzles and hidden doors
  • Dungeon Master voiceovers
  • Group focused so a very social game
  • No wasted time getting to quests
  • Excellent AI, mobs are varied and can react on sight or hearing and will alert other mobs or even call for reinforcements
  • Good LFG facilities
  • Good graphics, semi-shared engine with LotrO, including DX10
  • Good mature community and plays especially well with friends

Cons

  • No Druid class
  • Experienced players can rush quests, which considering the detail and love put in to the quests can ruin the experience for a new player
  • If you like don't like instances or want wide open zones that is not DDO
  • Poor crafting
  • No housing
  • If you play a lot you may have problems with the amount of content
  • Not a game if you want to spend a lot of your time soloing
  • Not a lot to do if you can't find a group

Sure other people can add to list and of course all of that is very subjective to tastes. I am from UK so no point in give character names.

Give it a try, it is very different to your standard MMO.

I'm positive about what I play. If it ends & I get negative, I move on. This is how we not troll.

Pen & Paper is better? Let's try to be more mature, shall we?

Those don't sound like friends to me.  They should be encouraging you to experiance it for your self to make up your own mind asking what you think afterwards.

DDO has flaws but there more things it does right then wrong and I personaly think it's one of the best MMO's on the market if you like abiilty to create dynamic character and be engaged in environments which feel catered to you while providing a challenging game environment.

The game play is fast.  Think of it as an action packed, hack-n-slash strategy game that provides what I've come to find as being the best directed content in an online game whlie for your party members which cannot be interupted by kill stealers and other ass hatery you experiance in open world games like WoW.

It is not PnP D&D and is more of a revisioned version of it.  I used to be a fan of AD&D which this is nothing like and that being said I like DDO a lot.

I liked that they remade a lot of the newbie area so you don't have to grind thru the same quests/dungeon over and over. A lot more content now than what it has 3 years back. The community seems to be more mature as the leet kids have moved on (or better yet matured). After stopping for 3 years I came back and is pleasantly surprised. They have an auction house now and can create customize gear (abiet still only in limited ways). The only bad thing I noticed is that some npc enemies still float around during fights lol...

I hated it when people rush thru a dungeon just to grind XP and get rewards. I've done the waterworks probably a billion times but when I am with a new player just wait patiently for them to take the lead and go thru at their own pace.

Dr. Rock summed it up great, though I have one area of disagreement with him:

If you are patient and really want to solo, it IS possible.  Most people would get discouraged by the very slow progress, but Turbine has added at least two things to make soloing easier:  solo difficulty level for some dungeons up to level 5 and Hirelings!  Hirelings are limited to one at a time [clerics are most useful] and are about as good as a player half their level, but they REALLY help soloing [if you allow yourself to use them - if you consider that "soloing" and not cheating :)]
