forums.ageofconan.com/showthread.php Was bored, strolling the AoC official boards and saw this gem of a thread, and for the life of me, couldn't tell if the OP was trolling or being serious. I dont know, seems like the player base is rebounding nicely from all the bad news that's been circulating the net about the game's future. What do you guys think? The most misused word on the internet: loose adjective, looser, loosest, adverb, verb loosed, loosing.

I read this a few days back when worgpest first posted it on the AoC forums. Worgpest seems to be repeating what most of the community new and old has been saying over the past few months. I completely understand why you are asking yourself if he's being sarcastic. Let's face it the game was horrible from launch until about October of 2008.
I originally quit Age of Conan myself with extreme disappointment just before Craig Morrison (Silirron) took over as the Game Lead for Funcom. I pretty much wrote off Age of Conan altogether mainly because of the imbalance issues that surrounded gems. I assure you that most of the bleeding occurred during the Age of Gem exploiting. You had 90% of the community rolling Soldier class because they could just charge any squishy in the game and kill them in one shot. People just got sick and tired of game director Gaute Godager not only not doing anything about the issues but just not SAYING anything whatsoever in regards to how he was going to fix Age of Conan. I saw the Age of Conan population almost vanish over night during the Age of the Gem and Momentum exploit.
I don't think we will ever know the entire story surrounding how Gaute Godager "retired" from Funcom. Maybe he left on his own accord after seeing 500k players leave in about 4 months. He had plenty of time to fix AoC during those 4 months and he COULD have fixed it with relative easy. HOWEVER Gaute chose to not communicate with the Age of Conan player base AND not fix the issues. I decided what most players decided - Let's try Warhammer (and possibly Lich King). Players made up their minds even AFTER Gaute left and was replaced with Craig to try these new games and expansions that were released in the fall. You have to remember there was a significant chunk of WoW players that left to try Age of Conan in the United States. It was even commented on by Blizzard when they came back about 3 months after Conan was launched. They didn't come back because fundamentally Conan was a steaming pile of garbage. Players switch back to try WoW again because NOTHING was getting done to fix Conan and no one would talk to them. During the transition period of Craig Morrison taking over the reigns of AoC two major issues that were really 75% of the problems got resolved: #1. Gems were removed #2. Momentum was fixed. The very easy fix on Funcom's part made an ENORMOUS impact on the playability of the game. Unfortunately it happened after most the players lost trust in Funcom and left. No one at the time knew what kind of impact Craig would have to Age of Conan and more importantly no one trusted Funcom including myself. (Please allow me some liberty to oversimplify some of the issues as I know there could be A LOT more detail regarding issues with Conan during that period.)
A huge patch that included PvP XP and gear was released the day of Warhammer Online's launch. Due to some issues it actually came the day AFTER Warhammer Online's launch. Nevertheless it was a great patch and had a lot of players scratching their heads. Players were still committed however to push on with Warhammer and Lich King and at least give them a chance to see if those games would live up to their expectations. I played Warhammer for roughly 2 months before realizing it wasn't exactly the game for me. It wasn't a bad game and I still play it from time to time but the gave felt so repetitive, "generic", and very impersonal. You don't feel attached your character or really even your class. I could go on further about this but the main point is I slowly stopped playing Warhammer Online as did most of their original players.
I have played WoW off and on since the closed beta in 2004. The Metamorphosis feature of the Warlock class (my main) sounded pretty interesting so why not give it a shot? Everyone who's played WoW usually has gathered hundreds of friends among many servers so jumping into it and kicking ass in PvE or PvP is no problem. Lich King turned out to be a little TOO effortless and more importantly the PvP was incredibly broken. Death Knights were pretty fun but very overpowered. Rogues and Mages were out of control. The bottomline is Blizzard did what Funcom did - they broke PvP. Perhaps not as OBVIOUS as Funcom but the point is it was horribly broken with no resolution in sight. Kalgan (one of the lead Devs with Blizzard for WoW) had gained a very notorious reputation for nerfing classes that challenged the ones he played in game. A lot of people were leaving WoW for AoC because of Kalgan. I remember watching a new Kalgan Bollywood movie almost every day in the months leading up to Age of Conan's release.
Warhammer was meh. WoW seems to have lost it's luster with a lot of MMO players. Now what was Funcom during the Age of Warhammer and Lich King? They were listening to their small community of hardcore players who at this time were reduced to the size of roughly 100k-120k players (almost a 700k loss). Then they announced server mergers.
Players started slowly trickling back into Age of Conan even as early as the beginning of Decemeber 08. Players started commenting about how fantastic the game was all of a sudden but there was one big issue to resolve - Population on their server. Sure Deathwhisper, Tyranny, and Cimmeria were still packed with old players and players returning but what about Doomsayer, stormstrike, Bluesteel and others? Now we have this great game making a comeback but there's no one to play with on their home server and no transfers available yet. The announcement of server mergers before the holidays (it actually happened in Jan 09 however) received A LOT of attention. I cannot stress enough how much this started the mass exodus BACK to Age of Conan. We must keep in mind though that the key change to making the game good wasn't just the mergers but all the issues Craig Morrison had fixed once we took over. He added a ton of new features and fixed so many critical issues that made the game not only playable but one of the best MMO's on the market. HOWEVER Server mergers imho was the catalyst that got old players tired of WoW and Warhammer to give Age of Conan a second look. Server mergers allowed new players trying Conan to get an experience similar to that of the launch of a new MMO title with almost no issues. So now we've stopped the bleeding of the hardcore community with Craig Morrison fixing gems and other issues while finally talking to the players. Craig Morrison starts to deliver on some of the promises of Age of Conan by adding in new features that were suppose to be included in launch but were left out. Craig Morrison effectively "relaunches" Age of Conan with Server mergers netting an ENORMOUS amount of new subs from players returning. What's next?
A patch that not only addeds an huge amount of new content but also begins to start addressing the PvP issues that were lingering (Kheshetta ZERG!).
Now we have what Age of Conan SHOULD HAVE BEEN at launch.
#2. Age of Conan is found to be fun but some playability issues arise and some massive bugs still exist. - June 2008 #3. Feedback from the players regarding issues are ignored for weeks - July 2008 #4. Momentum and Gem Exploiting runs rampant. Gameplay becomes unplayable. Players are STILL being ignored - July / August 2008. #5. Gaute Godager "retires" from the gaming industry - September 17th 2008 #6. The new lead game Developer Craig Morrison begins to talk to the community and start addressing the major issues. Some gem issues are FINALLY fixed just before Gaute Godager retires and more gem fixes happen just after Craig takes over. Momentum and other balancing issues are addressed as well. - September 2008 #7. PvP XP and Gear patch is released - September 17th 2008. #8. Warhammer is launched - September 18th 2008. #9. Issues are getting fixed and players are finally receiving consistent communication from Funcom. - October 2008. #10. Wrath of the Lich King is launched - November 13th 2008. #11. Population at an all time low. Estimated to be around 100k-120k. However the bleeding of players appears to have ceased. Announcement of AoC server mergers before the "holidays" - November 2008. #12. Funcom releases more fixes and prepares for 2009. Lots of content on Testlive server. Massive increase in activity on Testlive server. Players are starting to get exited again regarding mergers and 1.04 patch. Population increases slightly. Dx10 makes it to the Testlive servers. - December 2008 #13. Server mergers occur and are a resounding success. Population increases by some estimates 30% during this month. Lots of resubs and new faces start appearing - January 2009. #14. Population increases again by about 15-20%. Main servers are absolutely jammed packed. 1.04 patch is released at the end of the month. 1 major issue which was fixed within 48 hours. Players can't believe what is happening. Funcom begins to look less like Failcom. Major PvE content receives positive reviews by most players. Wing 3 of BRC finally opens. PvP starts occurring in more areas then Keshetta. PvP resources are being harvested now off of players in World PvP. Minigames are popping frequently on all the major servers. Forum activity jumps to numbers not seen in months. - Feb 2009 #15. Craig Morrison announces major fixes and enhancements to stats and gear - March 2009. I hope this post was informative to those players who are seeing an objective opinion on the game. I have enjoyed MMOs (especially PvP oriented ones) since Star Wars Galaxies in 2003. Age of Conan was a steaming pile of garbage by the end of August 2008. However it is starting to turn out to be one of the most historic turnarounds in MMO history.
Their assessments of Funcom and Age of Conan are mostly valid and correct in regards to the state of the game around THAT period of time. However you will notice that most of their arguments and criticism about the game no longer valid because their facts are outdated. The have no recent playing experience of their own during the past 4 months and have no current facts. The negative article released by Maximum PC (and a few other sites) on Feburary 23rd of last month dipicting Funcom's failures, CFO resigning, and population size was largely based on OPINION from data collected by DnB during September 2008-November 2008. It does not take into account any of the facts regarding activity or the amount of enormous success Funcom has had in the past 3 months. Craig Morrisson needed some time to turn what was a train wreck of an MMO title into one of the top 10 MMO games of all time. Age of Conan is currently #40 on the Xfire activity charts and #9 out of all MMOs since Jan 09. Age of Conan has stayed in the top 50 games based on activity on Xfire since Jan 09. The future for Age of Conan looks very positive. Dx10 will be launched most likely before the end of March and stat, gear, continued class tweaking before the end of April.
Being a former Funcom disbeliever myself, I thought I would never say that......
As a matter of fact I still have some major issues with Age of Conan in regards to my class and feats (Reanimation Pet Necromancer). However I give credit where credit is due. Age of Conan was one of the biggest MMO failures that is turning out to be one of the biggest MMO turnaround success stories in the history of gaming. |

I apologize for the spacing and formatting. It was almost impossible to make it look clean using this message board's default margins.
Probably some typos and other issues but I hope it was informative and shed some light on a lot of the questions floating around for some of the former AoC players.

it is amusing comparing these 2 interviews from January 2009 -- so easy to tell which one is Ellingsen with his "hype" style
pc.gamespy.com/pc/age-of-conan-hyborian-adventures/949095p1.html The most important problems we had to face were technical ones. We've solved most of those."
www.videogamer.com/pc/age_of_conan/preview-1449.html The launch itself went very well, without any major technical difficulties |

Good stuff both of them. The client is A LOT better then it used to be for sure. The 1.04.2 patch coming out this week continues to patch holes in their client.
I don't remember the launch being all that terrible myself to be honest. I just remember the weeks after the launch were very very very bad. The weeks just before Gaute resigned from his Game Director position was horrendous.
I should also note that they removed a lot of the "long" combo sequences too which was a major playability improvement for Melee classes. You really can't even tell it's the same game for the most part if you haven't played it since fall of last year. I think Craig knows it's not over yet and it's not.
They could easily damage their game again with the gear and stats back if they don't balance out some classes prior to those additions. I think they're going to keep that patch on the testserver for at least a month before considering it for deployment. We might not even see that patch until summer.

Fixing bugs, adding missing launch contents and reworking game mechanics are still NOT enough to convince all gamers and fans who left because of Funcom's bad business ethics, lies and broken promises to return. Funcom cheated our money and trust and come back after 1year with a "fixed" launch build and expect old fans to return? We expect much much more. Unless Funcom go the extra mile to introduce new amazing game features or ultra epic contents, we are done with AoC and Funcom incompetence. AoC might grab some mmo newbies attention. But most veterans and fans have already moved on. sry. ] |

They surely should offer free 2-3 weeks or even a month for ex-subscribers if ninja your post is true and their confident enough with their game at the moment. REALITY CHECK |

I think its too early to say if its "best" come around
if I was to compare Vanguard and AOC -- I would say Vanguard is making bigger strides for a turnaround
Anarchy Online, also a funcom game, did a great job of turning around a miserable launch so I have faith |

I unfortunatly have to agree with cetra on this one, not to say that ninjaboy doesnt make some good points. I played Age of conan from opening day, and i quit in late september due to the same reasons that have been said more times than i can count. Now before you go into the whole "omg he hasnt seen the new content, hes so wrong" I reactivated my account 3 weeks ago in the hopes that the game will have improved. And once again the "wow killer fails" After a couple days of enjoyable fun, the same problems are there. And as for numbers, being number 9 on the MMO play time in X fire is really not a great thing. |

They should and I "think" they are going to do just that here soon. I read something about a new marketing promo coming up. They already started a little promo with a new computer giveaway that is ending next month. It's the least the can do considering how bad the game was managed most of last year and how much it's improved. I know it is coming soon though.....
Anyone with recent playing experience knows this because they've seen so many familar faces that haven't been online since the game crashed in August. Sure there will be SOME fans that come back and still need more to stay. That happens with every MMO. He just left Warhammer recently to give Conan a try again. I for one am certainly keeping an eye on 3 or 4 of them myself. However I think it will still be very enjoyable to jump into AoC from time to time even if I do switch to another MMO in an year or two. |

I think there's a sizable chunk of players waiting on DX10. I'm following AoC very closely (I also left in the first month) and I've tested DX10 on their testlive server and it's amazing. Once it goes live I'll probably play AoC on my downtime (Chronicles of Spellborn will probably be my primary MMO). |

People need to understand that Gaute influenced the AoC of today 1000 times more than what Craig has. What has Craig done? Talked to community more? Wow.. that's amazing. Like Courtsdad is here saying, the same people are still in charge behind the scenes. The same unethical "evil" people who are responsible for all the bad things Funcom has done to our community. Craig is not an owner of Funcom like Gaute is. Craig is just a guy they made game director and who they try to make as a "saviour of AoC" when in fact it's the low level coders who have improved the game since Gaute left. It's the low level coders who do those 14 hour days under the whip of Funcom owners. Hell, Funcom could make me AoC Game Director today. I would go golfing every day and wouldn't do any work related stuff for a month. Then when a new patch finally comes out, all the fanbois here would praise me how I did a good job. |

Get real. This is a game, not a life-altering crisis. To imply there is any comparison suggests you are either one or a combination of the following: a. Pre-pubesent b. Emotionally stunted c. Addicted to online gaming A quick risk analysis would indicate the best course of action with the game is to try it again and give it another chance. The best course of action in your 'short analogy' is more subjective due to significant emotional involvement in the situation. I would forgive but not take back either person due to various factors (eg, see 'cuckolding' in any evolutionary psychology textbook). The expression often used to describe Cetra's attitude is "Cutting your nose of to spite your face". Ultimately, Cetra loses an opportunity because he is too bitter over something incredibily trivial to move on. This is a childish mentality, also known as being spoilt. Sadly, this is indicative of many gamers despite the supposedly mature market many games now target. I'll disregard what I don't like and do what I enjoy. Playing: RIFT | Global Agenda |
