So, I just read one of the news articles on the main page here, with messages from the Darkfall devs.  They specifically said that they only "frown upon" macroers.  This just sounds to me like they are going to openly accept bots and farmers.  I know some games are a little lighter on enforcing this form of exploiting/cheating, but openly allowing it seems like a bad idea.  The next thing you know they'll be openly selling in-game currency and items to suppliment their subscription charges...

plenty of other games 'frown upon' macro's and botters.  Aventurine is no different to any company that has limited staff who can combat the botting/macroing.

Pretty sure the dev's said you can macro but dont do it near the guard towers and starter towns. Also that it would lead into being booted and if you get caught alot macroing in safe areas you will be banned.

"To address an issue reported by players: We generally frown on unattended macroing and if you use macros you do so at your own risk, but it should be mentioned that spamming spells and any macroing WITHIN the protective radius of the guard towers in the starting areas will result in a kick, and repeated offenses could result in a ban."

That their exact stance. The reason being is because, aside from gathering and melee skills (which even they said is not as indepth as magic or archery) all skill require items to level up. That means to macro, you put yourself at risk of losing huge amounts of gold by getting killed while AFK. Think you are going to marco out in the wilderness with 1000s of items to max your magic and get away with it? Hardly.

...so in other words, DF has a firm zero-tolerance eighteen-strikes-and-youre-out policy?

I don't know about not getting away with it.  Players go to great extents to get ahead in games, even when it can get them banned (in games that actively track botters/macroers).  What about someone having a "heal bot" to follow them around and keep them alive, or that players will be free to develop programs that allow them to auto-defend, run, or otherwise work around the dangers (like the program that was developed to do this in WoW)?  I just think that if you don't actively prevent this form of cheating, you're going to create an unbalaced game and game economy.  Yes, people in every game are going to try to cheat, but the developers shouldn't just shrug their shoulders and look the other way.  Only banning people who macro in safe zones frequently is not going to be enough.

I'm a little confused about Aventurine's definition of a macro and how they affect DF's style of play since I've never played it yet.  Like in WoW, if I wanted to use both my trinkets at the same time I could make a macro that would go along the lines of...

/use [1st trinket's name]
/use [2nd trinket's name]

So in DF are people are making macros like...

/cast [spell name]
/cast [spell name]
/cast [spell name]
/cast [spell name]
/cast [spell name]

...and all they do is click this macro once and it will cast the spell five times? If so, I don't really see it as that big of a deal. What's the different between someone typing "/cast [spell name]" over and over again and some just making a macro to do the exact same thing and just sit there?

Thanks for proving my point lol. You aren't going to be safe in the wilderness macroing skills. You will get killed. The only safe marcoing that doesn't take any investment is harvesting. If you try that with magic you could possibly lose 1000s of gold worth of material needed to cast you spells.
