there's quite a number of definitions for vaporware. that's fine if you pick one definition which doesn't apply; but don't ignore the other definitions which definitely do apply... learn what the term means and use it correctly.
So by your post you believe that the meaning of Vaporware on Wikipedia is correct and the rest wrong? i feel anotner /facepalm headache coming on. Using Wikipedia as a source for anything is a mistake friend, it's right about half the time and even that's debatable considering anybody can waltz in and change it to suit their own view. Vaporware defined by knowledgebrush is valid, if you choose to not accept it as such because it doesn't fall into what you want it too, well that's fine...illogical but fine, i'll give other examples http://dictionary.infoplease.com/vaporware va•por•ware
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/vaporware
http://www.yourdictionary.com/vaporware a commercial software product that has received much advance promotion but whose ultimate appearance on the market has become doubtful because of continual delays I don't think i need to go on especially when all three examples say the same thing, but by all means keep using wiki as a credible sourse of information and i'll use the one's that actually are a credible source of information. |

oh yes please facepalm that's quite manly. since when are any dictionaries current to computer and/or internet items? please do tell when "lol" was able to be looked up in a dictionary? how many years after "lol" was being used was it added to said dictionaries? and if you'd have looked at the wikipedia page, you'd have found a definition which suited you. i only pasted two of many definitions, as they fit the bill. and what i pasted is an actual explanation, not just a single line or two. but whatever, vaporware, failware, whatever it doesn't change that it's one, if not both.
shouldn't you be playing this wonderful game that's been spammed all over the internet for the past year? oh, did you not get into the pay-to-play beta? i'm sorry if you can't; but it really doesn't change anything. i guess by your definition that duke nuke'em for ever isn't vaporware either?
edit: joined 01/22/09 eh? are you a paid damage controller, or just volunteer? could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please? |

vaporware, for instance. Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product. The term implies unwarranted optimism, an as yet unannounced abandonment of a project, or sometimes even deception; that is, it may imply that the announcer knows that product development is in too early a stage to support responsible statements about its completion date, feature set, or even feasibility. However, most vaporware would not be considered a hoax since the makers have a genuine intention to create their product, even if it ultimately never materializes. Products with unspecified release dates or long development times that outwardly demonstrate regular, verifiable progress in production are not normally labelled vaporware.
Fails to emerge. Is not released. Fails to be released. Never emerges.
Get the picture?
Darkfall is an MMO that is CURRENTLY OUT, granted its not meeting up with the whole supply versus demand atm, but thats the way AV chose to release it, its their game and they couldnt afford more then one server. Calling it Vaporware is, by ur own definition, out of the question.

...ehm, i dont know what they told you, but they told the rest of us that they had to do a staged release due to lack of ability to handle the massive amount of players that wanted in. The Billing system issue was put on hold due to massive problems the first two days at launch, and should be up and running soon(tm).
And this isn't Beta. Not for an MMO at least. Is the game totally finished? hell no. There are menu items missing, the chat system certainly needs a complete overhaul and the lack of a proper petition system is laughable. Is that absoultely normal in any MMO at release? Oh yeah, with ZERO exceptions.

I, like this guy, judge the game on its vision and actually love that a small company dare make a game that differs from the norm. And furthermore, according to quite alot of people, this is actually a really good game. lol your a very damn funny person since when did 6k to 8 k people suddenly become alot of people. there is billions of people in the world. there is 12 million people playing wow, then that means wow must be a really good game. wake up gal this game only appeals to a few. its not big , I think even Istaria has more players than this game. wake up call a few thousand is not alot of people. stop making it seem bigger than what it is.
with regular and free expansion-size updates, prompt and swift customer service, and superior value for our players. sorry i posted this here its just to damn funny. LOLLLOLLLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL gg AV with superior customer service LOOOLOLLOLLLOLLOLOLOLOLLOLOLOLOL Im going to sell you a dream. |

amazing how the meaning changes when you read the entire sentence, as opposed to 4 words of the sentence. reading with comprehension is what matters. for instance "do unto others" as opposed to "do unto others as you would have them do unto you".
now that we know you can read 4 words of the post, read the entire post the entire post all of the post all of the words of the post the post in its entirety WITH comprehension

Potential in mmo's language means : failed. It could be but it is not. When people says a mmorpg isn't for everyone, it means the game is unpolished, unfinished, full of bugs etc.
- EQ2 is a serious mmorpg (objective) but it's not my taste (subjective). I can recommend it. - VG is a pay to play beta even 2 years post release (obj), it's my taste (subj), but i can't recommend it. - DAOC is a great mmorpg (obj) but too old and servers seems empty now (europe ) so even it's my favorite mmorpg can't recommend it - AOC is a pay to play beta , I can't recommand it, even if found design and music impressive - Wow isn't my taste at all, played 1 month and it was a pain for me but i can recommend it - Lotro is one of the best mmos in the market but can't play for a long time, a bit boring, can recommand it to everyone because it's polished - Found war boring as hell (subj) but i can recommend it to everyone because works fine, has enough players and payable for casuals and HCG (obj) - TCOS has interesting features (subjective), mobs'AI is fine, works fine on my computers (Obj) but i won't recommend it because of IP ban and too many publishers, small cty (objective)
DFO is not a game with a lot of potential. DFO is an unfinished, unpolished, unprofessional game, only a bad FPS with an arena no more no less. I don't think people are going to pay months and months of subs only for pk. I remember TR"s launch: TR had the 1st rank on MMORPG.COM (hype). Now it's over. FB says DFO isn't for everyone, I say DFO is for noone, but for some blind fanboys: - objective : unfinished, unpolished as hell, no customer service, billing system is catastrophic, server is a dead one, this project has been unprofessional and a joke from the beginning to the release - subjectibe; cty seems full of blind fanboys, the worst I saw since DnL . i'd post the meaning(s) of various types of beta, but you couldn't read the meaning of vaporware. can anyone go buy the game right now? no. how many mmos currently in retail, right this moment, can i NOT go buy a copy of/download? darkfall. staged release? seriously, you're one of the few players (at least players that are being honest) that are saying this is NOT a pay-to-play beta. the friends i have, who are playing, even the ones who LOVE this game, readily admit this is nothing more than a pay-to-play beta, even moreso than AOC or POTBS.
MMOs can, and do (seriously - they do) release polished, relatively bug free, all parts playable, little exploitation, etc. this isn't 1999. MMOs have come a long way. people lowering their expectations should not expect ANYONE else to lower expectations. unless, of course, this game costs a lot less than the normal MMO being released. it does not. so, if, when the game comes out of pay-to-play beta, the game costs the same as other MMOs, it will be judged by the same measure as other MMOs... no amount of spinmeistering will change that. good day. could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please? |

A but Darkfall doesnt apply to this, because the game never exceeded a development cycle that would normally be expected if u look at the history of Darkfalls development. The games creation was restartet several times and the last installation of its development team only took 5 years, which does not by any stretch of the imagination WELL EXCEED any expected development cycle. I know Trolls like to throw around that Darkfall has been in production for 8 years, but the fact is thats simply not true, since the original company had to restart their efforts several times.
Also the minute it got out it seized to be Vaporware, even if it was before.

Can u buy every item that exists on the open market today ? Nope. only if it is in supply, and that supply is not exceeded by its demand, which in the case of this particular merchandice is the case.

you fail in logic big time. i like how you can easly dismiss wow as being a great game yet darkfall is perfect it has "alooot" of players it appeals to all type of players. Grow a brain. In the MMO industry 8k people means Jack. its not alot. no matter how you look at it. Thats the reality of it. This game will never NEVER see as much subscribers as they vast majority of the mmos out there. Like i said the buggy game istaria has more players than darkfall does. oh and soon darkfall will have less players as it seems they will have to ban 50% of the player base due to macroing since the game dispite NOT haveing lvls is a TOTAL grindfest. Cast spell 1000 times to see a minor upgrade is the same as getting a few lvls in another game and getting an upgrade. Keep casting and throwing arrows. Go look for those bugged mobs that do not attack back to raise your swordskill. yay Im going to sell you a dream. |

ahahahahahaha! sorry i took so long to reply, i fell out of my chair laughing. let's see WAR came out, i had no problem setting up an account, no problem with billing. i was able to log in and play fine. everyone was doing PQs, not a lot of the keep defending going on, some raiding. their version of "battlegrounds" normally had little wait. the chain quests for (at least Chosen) which went on for 15+ levels, were quite fun and the angel/demon/whatever creatures that appeared and spoke to me at the end of the chain, were pretty cool. UI was complete. everyone that wanted to purchase a copy seemed to be able to, and if not, they were able to shortly purchase a copy (oh and it wasn't out at just a few thousand copies). LOTRO had a smooth launch. there is quite a list of decent/good/great launches out there. i'm sorry that you're new to MMOs and unaware of things such as this, which are incredibly COMMON knowledge to people that have played MMOs for any amount of time. seriously -- BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH. your comments about supply and demand. you really don't understand what you're talking about there. sorry, but i have to go hahahahahahaah again here. see my comments above about WAR, and well, all MMOs except for Darkfall. but, keep in mind, that sync/desync issue... avoiding that is why there were limited accounts for darkfall... hahahahaah OOPSIES, guess that didn't help. the rest of your reply makes even less sense. ESPECIALLY if you consider it's a DIGITAL DOWNLOAD --- BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAH (yes, i'm imitating your laughter, cuz it's so droll). how exactly do you run out of a digital download? too much bandwidths from der downloades? too many DOS (denial of service) attacks taking them down? too many people with multiple windows/logins jamming up the system?
you replied to the other post STILL without having read the entire post.. there were two definitions of vaporware in it. you'd have known that if you'd have read it.
that whole "fanboi" label doesn't do you justice. ya know why?
i'll tell you a little story... the wife and i beta tested wow. this is what.. the third or fourth day of this game going into pay-to-play beta? but... you're posting. not just once, but REPEATEDLY posting. says a lot about the game, when even a fanboi thinks that little of it. that first week, the people that really enjoyed wow, were nowhere to be found near a forum, aside from maybe a guild forum.
seriously, the more you post this first week... the more ANY fanboi posts this first week... the more it speaks worlds of how great darkfall isn't.
truly, that's to laugh at. hope you're not a paid damage controller. could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please? |

This entire thread just because he posted yet another "anti-troll" post?
Good grief...
Warhammer sold some 1.5-2 million copies I think, and they had the ability to host those players, now as for what the game turned out to be, that is for each to decide on their own. The Lord of the Rings launch was pretty smooth from what I remember. I am waiting patiently until Darkfall is all sorted out and they finally stress test their server...anyway...kind of laughed at that sentence, "stress test their server"...I thought they had already done that with their bots...
It is the fanatics that seem to be turning me off more and more about this game lately. Blind faith more often then not just leads to spiked Kool-Aid... |

Because i'm new this site that means i'm some paid apologist? i believe my posting history clearly shows that i'm neither for or against Darkfall but am patiently waiting to see the outcome, i've also pointed out how releasing a game in this state with the market being saturated as it is as a 'bad move' in another thread...and you even replied to it, so either you didn't even bother to read it before replying or only see what you want to see. The term "Vaporware" has been around since the inception of software, naturally there will be many definitions, that doesn't mean they're correct...software cannot be Vaporware if it's been released. Duke Nukem is Vaporware, i'll explain this step by step using DN:F as the example: DN:F Was shown at E3 1998, 3D Realms only stated it'll be released "When it's done". DN:F 1998 was scrapped...Vaporware..the game they are currently working on will not be the same game, brand new engine, improved graphics and different story, this has already been stated by George Broussard. Just because a new game is being made does not make the old game they were working not Vaporware, it's very simple...they promised a game, they did not deliver...Vaporware, unless you can show me somebody who owns a copy of DN:F released back in 1998/2000+ DN and 3D Realms was a bad example to pick and i know why you did, because my first link cites it as an example, and they're right....the chances of us seeing the new DN:F is marginal at best if you take 3D Realms track record into account. AV promised as game as well, but because it didn't come out on time that makes it Vaporware to you and others...no sorry that doesn't make it Vaporware because people are currently playing and have purchased this game...not Vaporware, nobody was able to buy DN:F back in '98 and i very much doubt if people will be able to buy DN:F anytime soon if at all. I hope that puts things in a better light, since it's obvious that we're going to agree to disagree i'll bow out gracefuly now, you seem to have your mind made up about me and my tactics anyways so i fail to see why this discussion should continue.

Darkfall is so great for him, he spends more time here in the threads "defending" his game from evil trolls that might get ingame and kill its populations. Yeah hes so hardcore . So what do you want some e-award for your e-heroic deeds.?
