I don't think pure market share is the best determination of the best MMORPG. WoW does so well because it is so simple and can appeal to the masses that do not like to think too much when they play a game. For the people that like an actual challenge, a game like EvE Online presents itself to be a better game on a huge order of magnitude. Considering EvE caters to a more intellectual player, the number of subscribers is going to be substantially lower. But for the vast majority of these players, a game like WoW would almost be unfathomable to play.

Both games will be around for many years to come.

WoW will grow old one day .... I have hopes for GW2 :) [if it ever comes out], but definatly WoW2 ;) if anything doesn't until Blizzard gets to that stage (and that my friends will be the end of the universe)

Mechanically, Eve is one of the worst games I've ever played.   It doesn't help that the shills make the game out to be more than what it really is.

Man, You must not play many games if Eve is one of the worst to you.

Weather a Game is good or not is subjective, you may hate it while I think its the best mmo ever created.

Eve gives players options that not even wow can give. Players that look beyond the point and click movement realize this.

I personally find it mind boggling that someone could dislike this game. With so many freaking ways to play, it certainly deserves its respect.

CCP has created a world that can be totally shaped by its playerbase, how many other MMOs can say that? Certainly not WoW.

I agree. I don't see how you call the incredibly polished interface and your smooth interaction of the game world being mechanically bad in EvE. Especially against a game like WoW that has the complex mechanics of "Press F1 to swing sword", "Press F2 to cast spell" and you win.

For the vast majority of those players WOW is their First mmorpg and you're first mmo like your first Girl / boyfriend. they always have a special place in your heart.

So what if anything is going to knock wow of the top spot?

** Edit

Also I just thought what ever game does take over from WOW will have to be like WOW in order to attract the current players !

Nothing will knock WoW off it's throne. It will pull in new Gamers year after year after year. Their sub numbers will continue to grow every year.

Blizzard followed the K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) theory and became the success they are.  They made a simple game with simple PC requirements and made payments simple to pay without a credit card. They made a game that plays simply marvelous- even on a 5 year old PC( off the shelf with no upgrades).

Look at all the games released since WoW- the good, the bad and the ugly-  all the new games did NOT follow the K.I.S.S. theory.  They raised the bar in the graphics dept. and then the game had higher PC requirements. Some games even had insanely high req as opposed to moderately high.

How many thousands or millions of WoW players do you think tried the Free Trial or Buddy offers from AoC, War, VG and LoTRO and lagged so bad that they went running back to WoW in relief? I know several ppl off the top of my head.

Low PC requirements= Mass Market game

High PC requirements = Niche Market game

Simple as that.

No game that has stiff PC requirements will ever have 'millions" of players- in my opinion!! Cus there's not "millions" of us gamers with pimped out rigs, of course:)

It's ALL good!   I'm glad there's a wide variety of MMO's because I neeeeeeed graphics that take my breath away!! Low polygon count ruins my immersion, ya know:)

Well .. Since the majority of wow players aren't mmo player. I.E interested in other mmos. I won't be supprised if the only game they will give a chans is the next Blizzard mmo.

blizzard's next mmo will beat wow once they are done going through all the currently released sandbox games and copying the best parts of those games, putting them together, and dumbing them down  like they did with wow.

To many people forget that little factoid.  Hopefully it won't be one game to replace the other.

Instead it will be a small army of games fighting tooth and nail for their piece of the pie.

How many times are you going to reply with the word "shills"? Aren't you cool. Your argument is stunning. Not to mention you are using the word in the wrong context as I have nothing to gain from my statements.
