Let me guess.. 10k isnt alot compared to what? WoW? Okay okay.. But lets use your example.. 10k is not ground breaking? lol... Sure when you are a millionaiire 10k isn't anything to get excited about. But when you are a small company like Adventurine 10k could be a very good number..

If I won 10k in the lottery I wouldn't be holding my head down saying "this aint shit.." lol.. But thats just me..

Those 10k were sold out in 6 hours, in middle of the night at europe, with EXTREMELY laggy web server.. I got my pre-order, but it took me 3 hours of refreshing the pages to get it because they went in errors and couldnt connect and shit..

Just wait and see how many more will buy it.

Yep. AoC and WAR preorders were what, 400k or 500k preorders ? Both had sold at least 700k in the first month.

Darkfall is aiming for 10k preorders? That's not a small game, its a micro game...

These guys are launching an MMorpg and this is it after 7-8 years of preparation, 10k preorders with web servers lagging and crashing all over?

How are they planning to get the funding to develop this game? How is this game supposed to improve and grow? If the company has no cash, where is the future for this game? They should now be selling 200k-300k at least.

Typical response as far as the WoW remark. I never have and never will play it. Btw i guess the whole"Thats like sayin you hit the lottoe for 10k  yea its good but its not groundbreaking. your not set for life."

Guess you didnt understand that. yea id be happy with that but i wouldnt go running around sayin yea i never have to work a day in my life.

So give it another try as for as tryin to troll. because you completely avoided my questions 10k is not enough for that company to survive atleast i do not think so.

10k x 50 bucks roughly. Do the math.

However it doesn't matter. People keep going on about it being sold out to let people know that they've brought in the targeted number (the 10k player slot on the server) which in my opinion is good. It's good for Aventurine because that's their initial target number. The true test will be to see how many more they can get after they generate more keys. Breaking 10k would be marvelous for Aventurine because it'll mean the game is indeed more popular than what people say around here.

Mind you, it's very popular just not very positively popular. I find it very funny that they hit 10k already and I'm betting 80-90% of those pre-orders were the very vaportrolls wishing for DF to fail.

Call me whatever you'd like.. I'm no stranger to these forums, I will not entertain your vocabulary games. But what I spoke was truth.. Maybe they don't care to see 500k preorders.. Like a small time band doing a show at a local venue and only 300 people show up. If they considered that a success then they were aiming excatly where they wanted to.. Not everyone expects to be a superstar in a day.. Give it time.. And if Darkfall actually proves to be a good game (un proven right now) then more will buy and play the game.. They are doing the right thing, by starting small and biting as much as they can chew.. :-)

Actually it's more like 20-30k, the population limit for the server is 10k consequtive people online, not 10k accounts.

That said, but normal mmorpg standards, no it's not at lot. This is an indie game, made by a company doing this for the first time. When they get more servers up, and word of mouth spreads even more, I firmly believe they'll rival EvE, easily.

They have to take it slow if they want to succeed and I admire that. If they can keep their 10k playerbase the game will succeed indefinitely. I bet in 6 months they'll have really polished the game and they'll need to upgrade their hardware to accomodate 20-30k on the server. Even if they only max out at around 50k subs they'll most likely break even and then some.

Exactly. Success is relative. As long as they meant and keep on meeting their goals, they're successful in my book.

It might be the fact that 10K is at the moment, the server cap?

This is the type of response i was hoping for thnx. Maybe for the company its alot but i dont see it. Thats only 500000 dollars or euros or wat ever it is. That doesnt seem alot for a company that put alot more money into it.  Not to mention pay rolls, server maintence, etc. I just dont understand how 10k is a braggable number?

Now say on the 25th they say they sold 100k 200k or wat ever that is something to brag about but 10k worldwide??? i believe??? (dont quote me) theres more people in my city then that.

It's nice to see some people using actual logic for a change. DF doesn't need 500k, 700k, 1.2m subs to be successful. Just needs a steady and consistent playerbase and they need to keep on polishing the game.

@slampig: Yep but it's their initial target. 10k is a lot of players for a single server to handle and they only have one big consistent world server. So as an indie company it's not bad at all. I'm betting they'll either keep the one server or have a second server for alternet rulesets. I doubt you'll ever see more than two servers with more than 50k total on each though.

@TrueWarrior1: That's only a short-term pull. After they get their players subscribing for long periods of time they'll probably break even and then some. It really all depends on how long people stay subscribed.

Even if 100 people say it sucks it won't make a difference really. Haters and trolls need to realize that they will never stop anyone from doing anything or make them do anything they don't want to.

The company needs cash if they want the game to grow. 10k x 13$ per month is 130k per months. This barely covers the wages for 10-15 developers at best, there's not even enough for server and other expenses. Forget about a 100+ people developer team.

Now you will tell me they will get another 20k players? After 8 years they aren't even ready to acomodate 10k players properly, with preorder web servers lagging and crashing all over.  And what would another 20k change?

How many developers do they have working on this game? This has no future, development will be extremely slow at best. Look at how slow WAR and AoC are improving their game worlds with their 1M+ sales.

I hate to side with a troll but....

In the entertainment industry....10K for ANYTHING isn't crap.  Seriously, like...craptastic indie films even do better than that.  I realize that their goals SHOULD be lower.  10K isn't just low....its unrealistic from a business perspective.  10K isn't even the average server softcap for most MMO's...let alone the total playerbase.  Even the worst of the worst both do better, and expect (and thus, prepare for) better, than 10K.

10K is kinda weak....and leaves no room at all for the "everyone tries for free" mantra.  Sure, they may add more later, MUCH later, but if you wanna play anytime soon you gotta get that cash a flowin'.   Its a baiting tactic, and kinda cheap if you ask me.  This game should have already had the ability to handle a minimum of 100K players the moment he mentioned anything about a launch date.

Even if 100K players aren't coming, this industry often affords at LEAST 100K in intial interest to most any MMO that comes out.  You plan for that, and pray you get it.  Hell, DF didn't even have to pray.  They had plenty of statistics to show them even greater support than that.

All things considered, no...10K isn't impressive.  Its pathetic.  I'd have excused them not being able to handle millions of players.  I'd even excuse not having access for 400-500K.  But not even having 100K of space for players to join?  Jesus, you could probably toss a handful of PS3's into a car trunk with some duck tape and have the foundation for 100K.

What IS impressive is that they COULD have probably sold 100K.  COULD.  As in, some shit that MIGHT have happened if they didn't suck.  An indie team possibly drawing 100K in the first day is hella slick.

I don't think a lot of people realize the sheer cost just for the bandwitdth for a gaming server per month.  For 10,000 connections woth of bandwidth, it could run them a million or more a month in that cost alone, let alone server maintenance, payroll, insurance and so forth.  Even for an Indie game, it would seem that they would need more people to make it break even, especially with the already high cost for the last 8 years of programming.  On top of that, it would need to make a decent profit just to pay for updates.

As a texture artist that hand paints most of his textures I'd say it's not hard to develop content on a steady basis and without much time required. I know many programmers who work faster with their scripts and programs than I do with painting a texture. It's all about the drive to perfect their game. I agree that if the drive isn't there it'll fail.

MxO is a good example. They only have 1 active dev left on the game and he's leaving. That's a huge lack of drive to work on a game that could have been great. If Aventurine is devoted to DF they will pour their all into the game and they will succeed.

500,000... Not quite the 10,000,000 they've invested. So if they are trying to recoup most of the investment costs like most companies then they need to sell about 200,000 copies.

I agree that if Av target is to start small than they should. I'd rather have a improving game with a small start than a AoC or War again.

I think they are doing it the right way; start out slow,  stress the server to capacity, and go from there. The one thing I find amusing about the pre-orders... remember all the vaportrolls who were screaming that Adventurine was going to scam AS MANY people as possible, take there money and run? Where are they now? The silence is deafening lol.

I wonder...

Is it better to open a game with only 10,000 subs, then build up your base slowly and steadily as your company can handle it, even more interest peaks and your servers can manage later to say... 100k or 200k?

Or:

Start out selling 900k-1.2 million boxes and then 3 months later announce you have only 300k subs left (and still dropping), and tons of dead and dying servers?

Which game would say to you "growth and stability"? Then figuring in the amount spent to make each game and their results, which game would you consider a bigger success? If you were picking a MMO, which game would you likely want to check out before the other?

Some of the naybobs should just wait. All this "I thought the game was..." is stupid talk right now. You had to wait to see if it was even getting out of beta and NDA release, although you kept saying that wouldn't happen. It did, and now you have new questions.

Now, just wait and see if its as nice as most of the beta testers claim it is before hosing it. You'll really hate yourself if you trash the game heavy right now, then finally try and and really like it.

Just think of all the people you could be killing that you turned off of the game, lol. :)
