I won't bother trying to convince you that the game is good because you obviously didn't like it, but i will comment about some of your concerns and how they really apply to the game as it stands today. it appears that you played and earlier patched version of the game from maybe a week or so ago there have been many changes since then that address some of your concerns. " When you strike you first blow at a goblin you will notice that melee is nothing else than you strike/goblin strike, you can also try to block the blow with a reactive block. " Monsters, even goblins are more reactive than simply standing there trading blows with you. They retreat when injured, they call for help, they will attack from range, they will circle during battle. They are far beyond the standard MMO Mobs where you target click auto attack and go make a sandwich. " There is a greater chance in this game that your first PvP encounter will be another player that tries to fool you to become grey(rogue), this is done with ease in Darkfall, just jump infront of someone swinging his sword, and bang that person is now grey and you can kill him without penalty.." The most recent patch has adjusted the Rogue system and you will only be flagged gray and attackable by towers for 10 seconds unless you choose to continue to hit the person that jumped in front of you while you were fighting monsters. And if you will come upon someone that is your enemy it's only a matter of who will drink the most potions of stamina and get the most hit's on your probably running like crazy enemy. Potions have been tweaked to extend the cool down on use to 45 seconds, they make a difference but they don't win the battle. Also running away from your enemy isn't a guaranteed escape unless you have a Guard tower near, even with potions running away just gives your attacker a nice target to shoot at and the more you juke and dodge around the more stamina you use and the slower you sprint. There is no point in even trying to argue with these fans, they will most certainly not listen to anything scared that teir ability to cheat the innocent players remain in the game.. Innocent players ? I sounds like you have an aversion to PvP which would explain your bias against Darkfall. Since you didn't list the exploits that the players used I assume they were things like attacking you while you were fighting a monsters, outnumbering you, blocking you from running away, loot the grave of monsters you killed? The game is built around players fighting each other and full loot, these activities are not exploits. The game is almost empty from both NPC's and wildlife and has a very sparse Mob selection, you can run for a half hour without seeing as much as single mob, this is done so the game runs smoothly, wich ofcourse it did during my beta test. I agree the wilderness isn't packed with Mobs, the DEVs explained that population is cut back for beta and will be different at release, how different we will have to wait to see. But it is an exaggeration to claim you can run for 30 mins without seeing any monsters, you would be hard pressed to find a section of the world where you could run for 5 - 10 minutes without find a monster camp or ruins, graveyards,etc... 5/10 It should actually be lower, but I gave Aventurine a couple of points more due to the fact that some of the areas in this game is actually good, and If they really stop listening to the most of it's rabid fanboys they have a small chance at creating something here..See you in a few years.. I respect your opinion but many of us feel that the DEVs are building the exact game we want to play, call us all rabid Fanboys but we seem to like a harsh game that isn't designed for 8 year olds and filled with rainbows and hugs. Considering the overwhelming demand for preorders from the current batch of Beta testers it looks like there is plenty of people willing to subscribe to play the game. |

Alof trolls in this thread (the fans just seems to get worse all the time)... but a very informative review IMO. I want a World in MMOs and it seems that Darkfall is the opposit to that.. Hopefully Mortal will be more like a world... If WoW = The Beatles |

This is a good question !! Well, according to me these games had a solid ground with built up lore in game, they had most of what it takes to create a fundation for a living breathing world even in the first 2 weeks of gameplay, it was alreadý there. Most succesful in this particular case is AoC, with it's voiced NPC's and somewhat semi real citys with busy city life(Note: not all NPC's are voiced but some areas in the game are) Both of these games are however strong IP's, with countless of books with written lore, wich makes it easier for a developer to just implement it into it's game world. Darkfall or the World of Agon, is an all creation of Aventurine's developers, but as it stands right now there is not a single bit of lore implemented in game, unless you count the starter quests that are the same for each race, apparantly they ALL have problems with Goblins. In this case the players can create the lore, wich ofcourse every fan will tell you when discussing this issue, or they will tell you that lore is not needed or that it sucks. This is fine aslong as ALL it's players would play the game based on thÃs fact, but trust me the majority of Darkfall's players coudn't care less about lore or moral choices of a real RPG or anything like this. They just want to kill and loot, wich ofcourse Darkfall also provides.
So I'd say Darkfalls playerbase will create what Darkfall will become, and it doesn't look to promising in that area.. /junker |

Is English your native language? Proofread your posts for grammar errors always, I find myself having to decipher some things you say. But besides the language issues, nice review. I can't say whether I agree or disagree since I haven't played the game, but it's nice to see a negative stand point. |

Originally posted by thark I would say most companies which producing mmo games, rather target for audience between 20-40 years. That would be only logical. Because this audience has more money on their disposal, after all its business. I personally can afford monthly subscription much easier now, than when i was still at university. And Thark dont worry about playing games and your age, the one i play some korean mmo with, for the last 2.5 years, is over 50 years old. "Originally posted by DarkPony I think he looks like Jack Nicholson which isn't such a bad thing at all." You cant imagine how many women find J. Nicholson attractive, no kidding. But cant beat J. Depp or B. Pitt. |

OP, it sounds like there is plenty missing, but what about ship combat? |
No it's not, I'm Swedish.. But that is still no excuse for sloppy typing, I admit to this.. |

I think ur wrong about both the animations and the sound, i think they will both be improved upon. And more lore, I guess u mean in the way of NPCs and quests? We know they will add more NPCs, mobs at least, at launch, maybe also stationary NPCs. Its an interesting critic, one that ive never heard before, personally i find it trivial since I wont be doing many quests myself.

Thank you for this reply, a fan that actually takes the time to really give feedback to this post. My review is far from perfect, I missed a few things others where left out of concerns of the reader. I wanted to get the overall view I had with Darkfall, thats also why I do not go into detail on everything. I admit that I missed one good thing that you mention, and that is the MOB's are smarter than the usual MMO, wich makes fights one vs one an experience more of the singleplayer combat MMO's like Oblivion. Althou, you will fast adapt to another strategy and killing them will soon go with ease. Yes I call many of those "dirty tricks" exploits, because they have nothing in living breathing world to do. These things you say only get's me proof that the average Darkfall player doesn't care about rolpeplaying or if there is a world with morals or not.

I have ony heard rumours about ships, supposedly they should be in the game. But as a comment Aventurine really should have given us the oppertunity to try them out, ea skip the lengthy crafting process and just given us the boats to test them.. As with many things like boosting all skills, so we could have tested the high end gameplay aswell, like magic in the upper stages for instance. There is very little to zip info what really happens in the later stages of Darkfall.. |

You obviously didn't get me, I ment the most common "player" of Darkfall |

"You magically appear at 1 out of 3 newbie areas" Did you expect to have a cinematic where your mothers gives labour or something? Of course you magically appear, that happens in all MMOs
Yeah around here I was 100% certain tha OP is just bashing the game. His whole tone sounds negative, biased and mocking. I don't have problem and take seriously neutral reviewers that don't like the game but seriously....you are not one of them. Instead of playing AND not liking the game you played it not to like it. |

Yes, maybe I did expect something more welcomming when starting the life in Agon. And that is also well explained in my review and in this thread..Maybe not a movie but something that tells me what the hell I'm doing here, why etc etc etc.. Let me tell you something, since I have quit Ultima Online I have waited and waited for something like that, I was lead to believe that this game was the one that would finally bring something like Ultima Online. But sadly is was evident that this was not the case. It's a game that focuses on fighting and PvP, that's all fine, and It works. But Am I bad for wanting something more with my MMO experience ? I want a living breathing world not a PvP arena with enourmous proportions. Ultima Online in it's original settings was a world full of lore and books, it was very close to a simulation of a small world. Darkfall isn't even close to that. |

Regarding his response to the graphics... I challenge anyone to name an MMO with better graphics that has a single persistant world without instances. I can think of 1-2 that might almost be equal, but I can think of none that are certainly better. With the avatars, sure, some games look better (they are only average in DFO), but the world, forced on medium textures, is second-to-none in any MMO I've played, even with shadows turned off.
It's obvious he only played this game very briefly, because he didn't comment on any endgame content. Had he even played for 3-4 days he'd have more to say about it. Also, he clearly tried to play alone, which is not what this game is geared towards. If you try to play this game alone, most will end up hating it for that.
I'm sorry you have no friends OP. |

You claim that "just because" Darkfall is a seamless world, a world without instances , it's almost like it's worth a medal. In my preference I'd rather have a way more detailed world than just graphics to show that there is something, something I will never be able to interact with at all, and that includes folks living in the cities, farm animals at the farms etc, tree's falling down as I shop them down.. I played It for a month or so, but many times during my play hours the game was offline for various reasons, many times during the whole day. Hmm..Is there really anyone that can comment on endgame content, Ohh btw I was under the impression this game has no endgame as it is a skillbased game and everyone could do anything.. Please, If you happen to know anyone that can give me some valid "end game" review of this game I would be happy to read it.. |

Hehe, I thought you seemed very sensible, being swedish explains it all ;) Apart from that you have listed exactly why I will skip Darkfall, I am one of those RPers who were interested in Darkfall due to what they promised on their webpage. But it now seems it is Quake in a fantasy world. Good for those of you who like that kind of game though! |

What do you want to know about endgame PvP? I've done most of the sieging in this game to varying degrees, but as you should know this was all changed today and there hasn't been proper time to test the numerous new changes. |

If they couldn't get it done in that time I don't see it being finished ever. |

But.. Maybe you could tell me how magic works in the higher scope of skills !! And how the boat warfare works ? How's the diffrent dungeons or other adventures you have been on ? And maybe you can tell us about the other higher degree skills, melee, archery, what choices are there ? And just for the sake of it, how was the pre patch sieging ? |
