. . .

Currently playing Age of Conan, WAR, WOW, Guild Wars and Runes of Magic.  Waiting on Aion and TCOS.  Have been thinking of getting back into EQ2.  Guild Wars and ROM are no monthly fee (haven't used the CS in ROM) so that's about $45 a month for my little hobby.  Some ppl might blow that much on a movie and food for a good night out, so I don't see it as costly.

I picked up alot of pre-paid time cards from Circuit City's closing sales (2 month pre-paid ones for about $18 for AOC, WAR and WOW).  I'm sitting pretty.

Lest anyone think I have no life, that's not the case.  I just don't take any of the games I play seriously.  I might play WOW for a few hours on Mon or Tues, then not touch any mmo til say Thurs.  It might be AOC or WAR.  Come Sat I might play Guild Wars or ROM.  Or I might not.

I don't have the best gear and likely never will--my time is too spread out over too many mmo's.  I am not in any guilds--I'd likely get kicked for being offline for weeks at a time.  I'll join PUGs and hang around in cities listening to chat.  I often have to turn down guild invites as I'd only be taking up space on the roster.

My highest level in WoW is a 71 tauren druid on one of the different servers I play on.  And after 4 years of that game, I only just recently started an Alliance character--that's a lot of new content/ quest lines that I've never seen.  Having a blast.

Call it a jack-of-all trades, master-of-none approach to my little mmo hobby.  I enjoy all the virtual worlds I experience.  I took that little mmo test about what kind of mmo player you are: no surprise, I am an explorer.  I have never experienced mmo burnout and make no jaded, biting comments about any game.  I consider myself well-rounded.

I do feel sorry for some ppl if the hobby they once enjoyed no longer offers them that enjoyment.  Often I've found that when ppl start to treat the games as a job, as competition, it sets you up for burnout.

Meh, my 2 cents.  Now I'll probably log onto my new gnome warlock.  Or my squig herder on Vortex.  Though I haven't played my Stygian necro in a while--glad I got to keep his name after the server mergers.  Or my mesmer--haven't used him in over a year.  Or my mage / scout in ROM--haven't gotten a good idea on how that class plays.  Might activate my old EQ2 account over the weekend--picked up the latest EQ2 expansion at Circuit City for $8.00 -- no joke.

Then there's the games that I'm beta testing . . .

Momento Mori

2/20/09 2:28:19 AM#53

Yup, I'm really enjoying my current MMO experience, but it's a beta test and I can't say anything about it on this forum.  Great devs though, great player/testers.  It's already more fun than the two finished MMOs I've played.  When this one is complete, it will really be an experience.

The trouble I find with a lot of MMOs these days is the corporate culture that drives them.  It's all about making money fast.  Copy someone else, push it live ASAP to start generating income even if it's buggy as hell and incomplete.  If people don't like it, copy someone else, and pump out the revamps as quickly as possible, once again even if they're incomplete an buggy as hell.  That's really just not how success happens, but these MMO companies just don't get it.

Blizzard, in contrast, has never embraced this "get rich quick" type of gimmicky game design.  No, they take their time, polish, and take pride in their product.  They also seem to realize that satisfied customers are repeat customers and that without a game population of happy people, you don't have an MMO.

If people want to copy something, they should copy Bizzard's philosophy and dedication to excellence in development and customer service, then be creative.

This makes me want to go back and start EQII again just to play a froglok again.....sigh....

I'm playing and enjoying WoW once again. I played from 2/2005 straight through to 6/2006 until I burned out. Got back in to it around 12/2006 and burned out again four months later. Stayed away long enough apparently that I am now back once more as of December with WOTLK and have been enjoying myself ever since. I pace it though with equal servings of WoW along with:

City of Heroes/Villains. Played for two months, on hiatus, but will be back. It's quirky, and I am looking forward to Champions, but the game definitely offers a nice change of pace from straight fantasy.

Age of Conan: I love this game, absolutely love it, storylines are too cool, the environments are awesome, and even the incessant Barrens chat+boobage doesn't get on my nerves (too much). Been playing 6 months now and only have a level 43 in the game so far, so I have a ways to go before endgame and the inevitable disappointing feeling of "now my cool RPG is effed up by PvPers" sets in.

Warhammer Online: I started on launch day and didnt renew....it was too much like WoW, and seemed very boring and too PvPish to me. Now that I've forgiven WoW I decided to renew, after buying some massively discounted game cards at the Circuit City out-of-business sale. I was very happy to see the Knight class for humans....apparenly it finally occured to someone at Mythic that not having the most basic, funadmental, boring vanilla class for boring casual players like myself was a bad idea: also called "the fighter". I have also decided to give an earnest try at the PvP, to see if it is different (read: more fun and skill based) than other games.

My wife is trying to get me in to Runes of Magic. It seems like a fun WoW clone to me so far, and I have had little incentive to play, since I despise micropayment games. I pointed out to her that in the last six weeks she has purchased $84 worth of diamonds for mounts and junk, compared to my $15 a month in WoW (well, plus $15 in CoX, $15 in Conan, and the massively discounted game card for WAR....ugh)

Er, nevermind, she can keep playing RoM all she wants.....

In the graveyard right now: Guild Wars. I've played it too much. Everytime I fire it up I marvel at how nice this game looks for its age, then proceed to remember that I've played it to death and just don't care anymore. GW 2 Please!

Current MMOs: SWTOR, DDO, GW, Champions

Not enjoying any MMO atm. Sometimes I stand around in Runes of Magic while reading darkfall forums and watching live streams of beta play (bring the servers back up already!). But, thats about it. I play Mount & Blade. That game should be an MMO and if it were, I'd be playing and enjoying it right now.

I am starting to get the impression that the gameplay of Darkfall is refreshing enough to overlook the outdated graphics.

I hear a lot of people whine about that, but in reality; MMO players are looking for experience more than graphic and animation quality.

That leads me to.. I would probably still be playing EQ and enjoying it if they never updated the client and models to silence the people whining about the character models and animations of the original client. Those people never did stop whinning. The end result was a laggy client that still runs terrible on even the latest PC's. The old client was never laggy for me, and the original Troll graphics rock.

I enjoy WoW, but only as a level 80 doing Classic content as a solo artist. Most people in WoW have been so trained by Blizzard to need loot upgrade fixes every 3 seconds, that most players have become selfish and impatient. They don't even realize it half the time, and I've only realized it through reflecting on my week as I often do. Also WoTLK is just a bunch of Newbie zone quest hubs strung together. No challenge, massive loot and upgrades for no work and totally geared towards the instant gratification crowd they have drawn and created from formerly laid back people.

EverQuest 2 seems like a nice option to try again, I am just leary of SoE in general. It would be a hard pill to swallow to ever give them a subscription fee from my own pocket again.

Ryzom is a good example of a game with crappy graphics that has such good gameplay, it has a large cult following. Maybe Darkfall will meet this bill, I hope so. Either than or TCoS better be good, because I need a change soon :)

Also looking forward to trying Blackshot, although it will probably make me sad with all the hackers that get into every FPS I've seen.
