I wonder if this will become a serious problem years later

We humans have a habit of leaving out trash whever we go.  Look at Mt. Everest .   The amount of trash climbers leave behind is sickening.

FUCK YES

Now if traveling to space becomes a normal everyday thing, I can collect space trash for a living!

Actually if one of the radiator tubes did get hit they'd have to land immediatly or be very very uncomfortable.   Basically in space there is no atmospere which means heat radiates away from you very very slowly, the crew could probably dehydrate itself in a mater of hours with just their own body heat and nothing else.

Wow. This is the first thing that came to my mind when I read the thread title as well.

A Good Sandbox isn't about your characters abilities; It's about the players ability.

Actually there is, it's called salvaging and it beats the hell out mining. Don't know if it will help out on your suck factor tho....

If your not making trash your not having fun!

I love this story.  I think this is probably the third or fourth time I've read it in the last ten years or so.  When news is short, they basically pull out stock stories like this.

As the article mentions, it's only a very narrow slice of the pie which is dangerous.  The vast bulk of "space junk" as it's sometimes called is small enough that it can't do harm, despite its extreme speed.  Larger pieces are very easy to track and maneuver away from.  In fact, I think this story significantly overemphasizes the danger present.  The space shuttle actually has a fair degree of protection.  The only real risk of something catastrophic happening is an exposed astronaut (on a space walk) being struck by a debris too small to detect.  The odds of this occurring are extremely small for a variety of reasons.

Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward. Sorry TSW.

That's because anyone crazy enough to think that probably also thinks that they're the ones who have been probing them.

So they keep quiet in hopes that nobody notices.

               Satellites Destroyed in Orbital Collision

* BUSINESS
* FEBRUARY 12, 2009

"A commercial satellite owned by a U.S. company was destroyed in a collision with a defunct Russian military satellite in what NASA said was the first such accident in orbit, raising new concerns about the dangers of space debris.

The crash, which happened Tuesday in low-earth orbit, involved one of the satellites owned by closely held Iridium Satellite LLC and a crippled Russian military satellite that apparently stopped functioning years ago, according to U.S. government and satellite-industry officials.

The collision created two large clouds of debris floating roughly 480 miles above Siberia, and prompted space scientists and engineers to assess the likelihood of further collisions."

Agreed.  Perhaps we can get our own space trash collecting team.
