Just look at the subscription numbers. AoC sold over a million copies at launch and they now have less than 100k subs..probably around 50-60k. War on the other hand started with around 750k subs and their subs are somewhere around 300-400k.
Not sure if you did this but you might want to start the same thread on the War forums to get a fair assessment.

Have you played the game lately?
AoC: 200k
WAR: 250k
But WAR is declining while AoC is on the rise. AoC might easily be on the top a month or two from now.

WAR is on 18th. now ;)

and if you look at the statistics AoC has a increase and WAR has a decrease of activity over the last weeks. now that tells us a whole other truth then WAR atm having more hours played. It does tell us WAR is loosing players, the game is bleeding. While Aoc have already turned their bleeding around and gaining more players.

Truth is while WAR is loosing players AoC is gaining players. we are not talking about huge numbers for both games. But the statistics speaks for itself.

So what you think? Does the truth hurt? :P

I'm currently subscribed to both AoC and WAR and I find myself playing WAR much more than I play AoC.

Both games have problems and I'll quit them both as soon as something else comes out but I see much more potential in WAR. AoC with all it's fancy graphics and such is just too boring and I don't see how they could fix it.

Re tried WAR in beginning of february, and I just find the game a huge boring piece of junk. I love the setting  and have played loads of hours in the RPG setting of WAR. The MMO does have potential, but I do find the control, and general gameplay extremely boring. Maybe because I do really like the combat system in AoC and how it feels, I just can't get the same feeling of being in control when playing WAR.

Might try WAR closer to summer again, but time will show.

Last figure I heard was that War had 300,000 people, officially. War may be in a decline but Age of Conan at best has just leveled off as the X fire stats aside from a few outliers held steady at 1000 +/- 200 over the last couple of months.  War also has at least 3 times the current subs so to point a finger @ War atm is to mock AoC as AoC is not in the same league now.

War 300k subs, 3.5k +/- 500 X fire users/day

AoC 75-125k subs, 1k +/-200 x fire users per day.

********************

Interestingly, X Fire is being pushed in AoC to inflate the popularity of the game, http://forums.ageofconan.com/showthread.php?t=181239 just like all of those phony "I came back and am loving it!!!" testimonials....though pushing X fire is probably more effective when done inside the game.

As AoC's population is now so low, one small guild requiring members to use X fire would have bumped it up the 15% reported.

**********************

The funny thing about this supposed revamp of players is that website trafic to the official site is still in decline and even though AoC is having some blitz campaign and trying to lure customers back by finaly fixing what should have been fixed at launch or much earlier without adding the content needed to sustain most players...there has been no huge increase to players over that month per X fire, so it apears the buzz about this game is dead.

Well I'd not really want to waste 50€ on a game I won't play, so thats why I'm trying to get as much info and eventually (hopefully) even a trial key so i can try it out before making my final decision.

Ya, I hear ya. After AoC I won't play an MMO without a free trial again. Check the WAR forums for free trial/buddy keys.

Hmmm... well... the first 20 levels is the most polished bit of AoC.  It's also the most "single-player" like.  Unless you think the single player feel was what makes you uninterested, it's probably not the game for you.

WAR is much closer to the traditional WoW type MMO.  If you liked WoW enough to play for years, you'll probably like WAR better than AoC.  In short, it played for me like a clunky WoW with more accessible PvP.  Public quests are pretty cool, and the starter areas are nice and dynamic.

Other than that, I didn't really see anything anyone else posted that I'd disagree with.

I'd go for AoC if I had to choose between the two, but then, 3 months was more than enough WoW for me.

FC certainly lived up to their reputation for launches.

It would probably help if their patch servers weren't complete crap.

In this case, exact numbers can be misleading due to all the spikes, but I think the trend people have been referring to has more to do with these graphs, which show that averaged out, one game has been going ever so slightly up, while the other, ever so slightly down.  Which can be indicative of more significant changes in the long run.

Hmm comparing subs for WaR and AoC.

AoC release 17. May - official subs number 4 months later 400K
WAR release 18. September - 4 months later 300K ?

So let see what will happen 1 year after release with AoC so May 2009 and WaR September 2009.

Both games lost record number of subscribers and AoC hit rock bottom back in November and since then its rising slowly.

As for WaR they still did not hit rock bottom but will soon and as well it will start to rise.

The funny part about AoC is there were still lots of players playing regardless of the fact that every decent MMO player will hit level 80 within first 14 days and will clear all raid content & dungeons in next 14 days ( assuming its in decent guild ) and still people are playing.

So there must be something with AoC that keeps people in for me its PvP / guild rivalry / Sieging ( siege note: performance got way worse since merge )

As for WaR well you tell me how long does it take to do basically all the game content and leveling.

Not a fan of either game myself but it was pointed out to me that Xfire had some issues yesterday and if you look at all games they were about 25% lower than normal. backing up to Sunday the 8th WAr's numbers wer well over 18K a bit higher than they were the previous two Sundays but about the same as they were Sunday Jan 18th and Sunday Jan 11th. Looks to me as if WAr has leveled out unless there is some mitigating circumstances I am not aware of. Their web page traffic has been pretty level for a month or so also.

From the people I met inWar...most were so buned by AoC that they did not give War the chance t deserved.

Get real War's PvE (4 end game instances, which owned,  and 75+ X 2   PQs  were better PvE than AoC will ever have......then   you  have the PvP scenarios+keeps, etc + leveling system.

War did not dumb down controls for   X box like AoC,

War is a better game in every way, like most MMOs than AoC.  I have a hard time believing that anyone who disagrees is not affiliated w/ AoC as AoC is 20% smaller than most games and after a year has the worst end game of any MMO on the maket.....so the Pop is 100% people that don't care about level cap, then the bad PvP system, w/ guards every where.  AoC is a bad game/

The only thing saving AoC is the marketers post on the forums saying how awesome it is.     Yet for a game with such great graphics to be so bad is funny, really.

War can't dumb down the controls anymore,  I'ts basically the same as every other MMO.  Push button thing happens.  Most of the PQ's are dead now so you wont be doing many except for when they make the easy ones in the next patch passes.

And you talk about Guards in AoC.  Those are there to try and get people into the free for all zones called border kingdoms.  Just like the PVP lakes are in War,   they want you to go to those areas.

War takes more skills per 10 seconds than AoC...........7 or so VS. 3 per AoC that's because AoC's controls are very dumbed down.  So your argument is War's are bad yet AoC's are 3 times worse? please, Simon says is a joke.

Ya you need a group in War, in AoC most people keep soloing to80thenreroll 2-3 times, that is sad and shows how bad the game is.....most MMO's start at level cap....and to preempt a rebuttle remember AoC has15%ish the content ofmost MMOs so your doing the same thing over and over unlike any other MMO.

It's silly that people can't get groups as 25x3 starting areasx 2 factions is how much better  War is than AoC, then 4 end zones...........so basicaly if you want to solo and reroll over and over AoC is a better PvE game.

Lol at border kingdoms.........I didn't see guards all over in the Arnold movies...please don't explain the kids game known as Age of Conan off........border kingdoms are vacant, because the devs were to slow to dev. The guards are there to shelter everyone, nothing more.

Though the border kingdoms and  the rest of the game made AoC feel empty due to a crazy lack of  content.......really play it the game is crazy empty! it's not a MMO at all and just wait until level cap wherererollingisyour only option...........no other MMO FORCED me to level in one zone for 10 levels straightbut AoC does every tier but one and made me do it in Tortage twice. what a bad game compared to War.

War fun leveling and 4 endgame instances, keep warfare whenever, an 80 level pvp system and scenarios...................AoC????????? bad boring linear leveling and boring kill X mob quest,  Siege  warfare that still bores most players and is rarely done, dunno bout scenarios if people are  doing   them but classbalance issues make them silly, oh yeah very bad raid content.....war's 4 one group instances blow itallaway.

thing is w/ HoT mechanics so healers can DpS raising will always be broken.

As for someone who played both games to level cap, I can tell you that War is a much better game than AoC. Just an FYI..I played AoC for 3 months and war for 2. Even though I played War a month less I can tell you without a doubt that War is a far superior product when compared to AoC.

AoC on xfire #44

Truth hurts doesnt it!

AoC is now 51.  Same day last week (02/02/09) the game logged 5,165 played hours played. Yesterday (02/09/09) the game logged 3,828 hours.

WAR is now 18.  Same day last week (02/02/09) the game logged 12,856 hours played. Yesterday (02/09/09) the game logged 11,234 hours played.

Not being a fanboi for either game just showing the current stats of BOTH games.

I'm fully aware of that, and I was waiting for such a reply :)

Looking at statistics you have to look at it over time, you cannot just take that day and use it as proof. Both WAR and AoC are going up and down on regular basis.  If you look the data over time there has been an overall increase over time for AoC, whilst WAR has had a decrease at the same time.  There can be enough explanations why AoC and WAR goes up and down. If you think looking at numbers taken during 24 hours shows anything then you need to wake up and smell the coffee. ;)

And I saw Hamrtime 2 thinking you owned me there, I guess he wouldn't know what facts are even if it jumped up and punched him in the face. ;)

I played both games and its not even close to which one is better from beginning to end......... WAR crushes AOC in just about every category. For the 100th time, AOC suxs.

Having played both games myself, I would say it's the otherway around. ;)
