There are more posts in this thread than that entire forum haha.

This thread makes me confused, but happy at the same time.

Who, honestly, cares, about what CMS you decide to use?
It's cute and all but you sure ain't working fast,
heck I've set up working community sites faster than this :P

Also I'd say use a better CMS tbh, the fact that they missed the granular UAC last time.... sigh..

But, well, good on ya, good luck with this idea...

Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...
It all sucked.

The only difference between a 'griefer' and a 'pvp freak' is the way his or her victim reacts. You need someone to take things way too personal and experience actual 'grief' to make it a griefer, that is, in the victim's point of view. The pvp freak only had a good time and the fact that the victim is crying about it in local chat or on 'teh forums' just makes it sweeter. In that sense, the best way to deal with those people is don't giving them the satisfaction of showing them they 'got to you', and write their names down for future reprisals.

You should realize that griefing is a form of sadism.

It's not the "cool, fun, free" way to play.

It is a personality disorder.

In fact, griefers do exist only in MMORPGs, where anonymity and general design flaws allow for such shit. In any other kind of "game", be it in RL or a PC Game, wannabe griefers get kicked in their ass, just like they should.

Its kind of funny that the random people I talk to and discuss " PvP  and PK "  have different views about it.   PvP types almost always say they hate PKers and don't associate themselves with the crowd.   On the other hand PK / Griefer types almost always consider themselves a PvP type.  Its almost like a PKers are an annoying little brother to the PvP types hehe.

I think it is kinda funny that some people have still not figured out that the Darkfall Community IS the griefer community. For the last 3-4 years there has been an ongoing battle about whether this game exists or not, and how good/bad it will be.

Did anyone seriously believe that the people involved were anything other than greifers? Did anyone seriosly believe that when this game finally came out, that the playerbase would be anything other than totally hostile to everyone?

It sounds like some people have been on heavy medication for the last few years... and are just now figuring out who this game has appealed to all this time.

Lets just stick with 'griefing' in a PVP sense, shall we? I didn't get the idea the OP was refering to a board for harrassers, scammers, exploiters and general sadists. We are talking strictly 'griefing' in a pvp sense here. At least I was.

Haha, this thread is great. So quickly got filled with trigger-happy defensive and pixle loving carebear cry babies.

Yes, griefing idiots can be fun. Why? Because what's unhealthy is not the griefting but the complete emotional attachement the carebears have to their pixles, items and online avatars. Through their unhealthy addiction, they misery in game reflects on their personal lifes. Don't blame us on your issues!

Anyways, recieved a few messages and I'll get back to them as soon as I'm off work tonight. Thanks!

Yes, we are speaking in PvP terms. Although that includes looting and stealing kills. In sanbox games, sometimes you must achieve your goals through numerous of ways.

For sure I'm against exploiters, but other than that, people can do what they want. I know people try to grief or PK me when I start fresh in games, and I expect that. It's a normal occurance and it all depends if you are prepared for it or will you cry like a baby because you do not see the reality around you.

If you are aware and always prepared player who doesn't get upset over dying in open PvP environment game, nobody will be able to grief you! Simple as that!

Griefing has nothing to do with attachment to pixels.

By griefing I mean "Having fun by making the game not fun to others".

I'm not talking about the guy who kills you while you're on a mob and loots you, or the guy who steals your loot, or the guy who one-shots you just because he can.
If you complain about that, well, just don't play PvP games.

I'm talking about the guys who actually stick to someone and harasses him until he logs out.
Those guy are sociopaths, and they should get treatment.

There is a bunch of good points here on what Griefing is,..

A griefer can have nothing to do with killing. Killing most of the time is not part of the mindset.

Greifers like In UO or diablo was probly when they were first born. A giefer could try and make a trade window open over an over to prevent you from playing, They could block an inportant npc you need to talk to. Anything out side of the games concept they will try and take advantige of. 90% of the time its really not part of what the developers had intented.  Griefers can be found in peacfull games like WOW alot more, theres more game mechanics preventing you from stoping them.

With that said, you intend to have a site where griefers can meet and talk,. if they are true griefers the last thing on there mind is to play by the rules. They will do what ever it is they can to prevent your concept from working and try to ruin it, and that is griefing.

If you feel you are a griefer, then playing the game is really not your intention, and your a idiot.

To no-one in particular:

Would you really like there to be no griefing?

Who would you hate? Who would you protect the newbies from? Who would you righteously smote to the ground or protect the loot of your fallen ally from? I dunno about you, but i have a hard time pretending that NPC's are all that dangerously evil.

A good sandbox game doesn't hold your hand and tell you which dudes you apparently hate, so rivalries and wars need to be player-driven.

If you see somebody slaughter a poor defensless newblet, you round up some 'good guys' and smack his popcorn with your tea cup.

Griefers give a game life, and they give it danger. I love every one of you nasty bastards.

And at this point, I consider anyone who uses the term "carebear" to be a neanderthal.

Maybe you shouldn't be mining ore by yourself in Open PvP environment knowing that someone can and most likely will PK you? Time to realize how the game works and maybe employ some protection from friends?

Welcome to Open PvP environment! Your tears and hate tells will always make me smile.

As I said before, don't play a game where you are exposed to game mechanics which you don't like. That's why I don't play WoW or Hello Kitty Online because I know that those games are not for me. Duh!

Let me just tell you that if you weep tears when someone pks you while you solo grind resources, then STAY THE HELL AWAY from Darkfall. Just a word of advice before your virtual life is shattered into pieces and you'll start ordering razor blades.

I'm curious!

How would mining ore become more fun if their was no chance of being 'ganked'?

Seems to me that the danger would make it so much more interesting.  I have no experience mining ore though. Maybe it's a blast!

Indeed. Personally I LOVE to mine ore with that added sense of danger. Knowing there can be an enemy waiting for me behind every bush or rock adds so much to a game for me. That is why I quit LOTRO, for instance. I loved that game to bits but it totally lacked the excitement of world pvp. To me, as an avid pvp fan (and not even much of a skillfull one) I love ganking as much as I love that sense of danger and getting ganked myself. PvP at unpredictable times and with consequences other than a mere loss of ten senconds running for your corpse adds so much more emotion and excitement to an mmo. (Which is also the main reason I prowl these boards. Darkfall has atleast got that part very right, in my opinion).

No, its the reverse.

Its the victim's who think having their virtual pixels killed without their approval have the personality disorders.  You act like there is some kind of necessary divine justice in a virtual world with infinite lives.  You take zero pain or loss to your own human life, therefore, the only thing lost is your pride and temper.  Basically, the majority of carebears I have met are emotionally disturbed over the simplest things; hence their fear and hate for a challenging and anything-goes environment.  In fact, I could go much further with that argument, but it would turn into a long psychology lecture.

If carebears had the ability to master their emotions and get over the fact there is nothing to be emotionly disturbed over in a video game, even virtual death, we would not have this debate.

Now, if you're refering to griefers as sexual harrassers or racists in chat, then a different argument is needed.  Its called the "/ignore argument."

Gamer fanboi. All games are good and/or great, in their own way! Stop da hate and go forth and play!

2/10/09 9:12:42 PM#49

meh why stop at the game. Lets just run out in the streets and pk everyone. I mean, we all do live in an environment that has mechanics that support it right. Since you can do it right? Just because you can, does not mean you should, or that it is supported. But I agree. I support full and real world pvp. Lets kick some babies in the head and steal their loot. I need more rattles.

In all seriousness though, how well could a community of people who like to grief others do? Wouldn't you end up imploding?

Cheers!

You see, the difference is clear. PKers and Griefers see the clear distinction between the real world and virtual reality and also see how some players have a very unhealthy emotional dependency on their pixels, and exploit it. It's not our fault someone has emotional and social issues and gets too seriously involved in  a game. Dying or losing some pixles in a game should absolutely not affect your state of mind. If someone is having a serious emotional distress because of a virtual game property damage, they need a serious check up.
