My friends and I are tired of going back and forth with wow and we're tired of getting into the next greatest mmos (AoC, WAR, TR) that end up flopping. So I'm not in the mood to wait a few months or weeks for the next dissapointment. So here's a list of what I'm looking for

Free or paid

System specs don't matter much (the worst system out of us is a core 2 duo with 2 gigs of RAM and an 8600GT)

Fantasy prefered

Not cartoony visuals

Small group content (3 or 4 for the most part)

Specific class roles

Skill/Talent points a plus

That's about all I can think of, I've tried eve, war, wow, tr, aoc, gw, and ff11 and would like to stay away from those. I like the controls in wow more than the twitchy crap in aoc. So does anyone have any suggestions? I'm open to about anything at this point.

Have you considered Lotro? I think it meets your specifications pretty well.

I haven't yet. I'll go ahead and try the demo. One of the friends that would be joining me used to play it and wasn't too excited about going back

Well, the gameplay is like WoW but better in all aspects other than PVP. It has very well defined class roles and great graphics. The environments are especially nice.

Vanguard is suprisingly good. They have a 14 day trial going on right now too.

I just tried the LOTRO demo and it felt slooow and I couldn't really get into the character design. Downloading the vanguard demo now. Any more suggestions? Thanks for the quick replies btw!

Vanguard is good as well. The only real problem I have with that game is performance.

I would still suggest giving Lotro a little more of a chance, but that's just me.

Try DnD online, I've been playing the trial recently and it hasn't disappointed me yet.

 I suggest Guild Wars Prophicies.  High fantasy with optional "henchman".  Bassically npc's with all the abilities of players that you can fill in remaining party spots with.  it's very possible to play the whole game with them, and very possible to play with only your friends.

Their is dual classing where your secondary is just as strong in at least half if not 2/3rds the aspects as if it were your primary.

There are missions and quests.  Imagine if the zones in World of Warcraft were much smaller and towns were their own zones.  Now towns are the only zones where dozens of people are allowed.  There are no servers except in towns which you are free to switch between freely.

There are realms for multiple nationalities and ethnicities which you can also switch between freely.

There is a big long cohesive storyline throughout the game without Walls Of Text, but you can do almost any mission regardless of previous missions.  There are only 2 or 3 which open up huge new landmasses on the maps.  The rest of the time go where you want.  It starts out parties of 2, quickly goes to parties of four in a matter of minutes, and by endgame has parties of 8.

Their are "attributes" and a freaking ton of skills, 300+ between just the 6 classes in Guild Wars Prophicies, besides over 100 "elite skills" which you capture after defeating boss mobs pokemon style.

No punishment for switching attributes/skills in towns at any time period.

Only goes to level 20, but GW Proph plays like a novel or film and you get skills through quests as well as buying them.  The introduction of skills acts as sort of an extension to levels..

Skills automatically level up with your attributes, and with Prophicies it feels like their leveling up with you.  The way it should be, you don't have to spend hard earned gold on "ranks" of skills.  In proph you don't have to spend on skills at all.

Also the mesmer class in the game is very unique.  It was made specifically as a counter offense to magkica based classes.  Mage casting a giant meteor shower which would render your party full of gaping fiery holes and on the ground?  Interupt it, causing damage, loss of mana, longer Cooldown, or simply punish a castor class every single time that it casts.  They are a great counter to both mages and monks, as well as the necromancer > : ).  naturally they have a tough time with warriors if their not speccing into slowing them down and healh degeneration.

Try Face of Mankind, the CB starts this weekend. The forums are active, in fact the game is completely player run, no GM interferance. Players elect presidents and senators and council members. There are different factions to join and call home. Unlike other mmos, there's no level grind, it's pretty much based on how good you are with a mouse ;).

It's an awesome game, go check out the forums:

@kingfelix

What do you mean by a performance problem in vanguard?

@Kingiczar

i've got just the first Guild Wars (somewhere) and it was alright. How many classes have they added since then?

@Z-Ro

All I heard was blah blah beta, sorry. Thanks anyway!

@Reddo

DND online looks okay but not quite my style.

Going to try the vanguard trial that's been downloaded on my desktop for a day or so haha, been busy. And probably try to track down my old guild wars info. The whole just buy the game and no monthly thing is pretty appealing right now. Still open for more suggestions!

Vanguard has all kind of video performance problems.  The most obvious is the screen freeze when it starts to rain.  There is an amusing thread about a guy that did this and that to eek out more fps.  I had 20 fps playing vanguard and 100 fps on lotr.  Here is the thread:

Vanguard is a beautiful game but a resource pig.  Lotr is much easier on the computer but both have annoying bugs that crop up every so often.
