Hello. First of all i want to thx the cosy-isk team for the guidance and help. My name in game is FARGANTH. Eve is a great game. At least , is my a opinion. Yes, its true that at the beginnig seems a hard game and you fell pretty far away in skill terms from the vet players. There are tutorials and a lot of people willing to help. Check the corp channel for help due the rockie channel is too crowded... And there are a lot of guides (all types)... And important thing to be aware is that depending on what you want to do, you can be someone since the begining. Little ships with low skilled players are still needed for tackling for example. The atmosphere of the game is the space so the empty feeling is a must have feeling. But you have to notice that nowadays there are peaks of 45000 players at the server. If you like to be a loner then its perfect for you. If you like to socialize then its not hard to join a player corp. There are hundreds of player corps. Maybe its true that with all those type of items and skils and etc you can be very confused at the beginning but think that later you will enjoy those variations. Maybe the skills are slow to raise due the learning tree long time training and due advanced levels but i repeat that it depens on what you want to do and there are a lot of things to do.
See you!

congrats for 'getting' what eve is all about. Good luck and fly safe! (won't offer to give you my ingame name so you can 'hit me up'. I like to help newbies, but like to piss people off more, and anonimity is to ensure i can do that in future |

EVE is a great concept, but a poor game. Freedom is only percieved and complexity is in number of items, not so much in ways you can use them. The feeling of flying the ship is detached and combat is too passive to be an engaging expirience. The biggest accomplishment is the way in which it simulates free market and sense of character progression, it's just a shame it doesen't give you more options, especially if you prefer not to socialise.
I'm glad you like it, but I wish someone takes that concept and makes a game around it.

Dude get a grip. I think he was simpling making a point that in EVE you can be an ass and get away with it. 90% of EVE has done an ass hole move before and the 10% that havent quit or are the ones that get pushed around. EVE in a cold dark universe. The last thing I want is for Every alliance to be allied because they are to nice to attack anyone. Nearly every war in eve has been provoked by ass holes doing something stupid. _____________________________ http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/148428/POLLING-HEAVEN.html http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/148428/POLLING-HEAVEN.html |

So why pay to play a game with people who want to be *ssholes? What is the point? Is it a thrill? Is it a male thing? I'd like an explaination of why it is so fun to join a game anonymously, and grief.

If you play PvP you know that you have many, many options for ways to use your items and fitting combinations, especially with the huge amount of different ships. Combat is much less "passive" as well. There are quite a few options that Eve offers that are not available in many other games either, although you have to be a PvP player and be established at making an income before you can take part in most of them. One thing you are correct about though is if you dont socialise you will have a harder time getting anywhere. That could be said for real life as well though. |

People play a game where they can be assholes because they know they cant get away with it in real life. Is it cause there weak? Perhaps. It could also be because of law and such.

I can understand attacking opposite faction, but that is way different than being *ssholes and griefers. Nice spin try. It still boils down to 12 year old console players being jerks because they are unattented by their parents. |

Well Piivot, Unherdninja has provided some good answers to part of your questions. As a former EVE player with over 2 years gametime I can both understand your inability to comprehend what drives EVE Players to do what they do, as well as understand that what Unherdninja and others have tried to explain to you is also true. How you view and experience EVE has almost everything to do with your perception, your "world-view", even your own personal ethics and beliefs. For many EVE is a Player's dream come true and for the rest of us it is a nightmare. Most Players either love or hate EVE, and I do believe it was designed that way. Is it a "male thing" as to how some players are ashhats? No, not at all. I am male and found that I objected to 90% of the behavoir of EVE Players...but then I have been classified as a Carebear. I disagree with Unherdninja that all males are "made that way" because I am not and I know several other Players of MMOs that find EVE not enjoyable at all. So in summary EVE is a matter of personal taste and point-of-view....you either love it or you hate it....and most EVE players can't understand why others don't feel the same way about EVE as they do. As much as I will never "Fit In" as a player of EVE ever again, I can still say I believe it to be the best MMO (all things considered) every created. Enjoy EVE Online if you can as it is very much worth your time and money. |

Eve can be a very fun experience. Just remember that it has an extremely high learning curve and that most of the time, things are not as they appear <Insert insult about ur fat mom here> |

i just mean i like being mean to people on forums without having my main character associated with my meaness (sometimes), hence why i didn't offer my ingame name to help out this new player. If he finds me by random, i will most likely (90%) of the time pop him. If he convoes me to ask why i did that and starts crying, i will be harsh and LOL at him. If he convoes and asks what he did wrong, what he should learn from that encounter, i'll offer advice and stuff. Armchair psychology FTL tbh. Also, it's not a 'male only thing', there is an all-female pirate corp. A girl in my old alliance used to ask me about combat mechanics so she could canflip/annoy people in hisec. PS. eve is described as a 'cold, dark and harsh universe'. there is no profit in being 'nice' pps. who cares about wow |

The appeal is in seeing people getting all worked up about a game, and therefore coming to the conclusion that they take it too seriously. Not against you personally, just in general. Also, the appeal is in seeing people say things like 'you only do that because of the anonimity afforded' or 'in RL if u do this....' It's a game to me, watching how people react to a given situation where they feel hard done by. If those people can't step back and realise that it's a game, and they have perfect control over what happens to them, it's not really my fault to teach them lessons that their parents should have taught them now, is it? |

Teala, the more I read your posts, the more I enjoy your mind. To Piivot:I am a 2 year veteran of EvE,I am also a happily married man and the adoring father of 3 daughters.(just a little background there) I play EvE because CCP has designed a well built game that has the features and elements of gameplay that I enjoy. I also highly enjoy the genre. For me anyway,it has absolutly nothing to do with it being a "male" thing. I often have to play with one hand on the mouse and the other hand on my daughters "Ken" doll.(and who says men can't multi-task) Believe me when I say that, philanthropy and altruism exist in EvE...the fact that it is rare makes it all the more sweeter for those of us who engage in it. I never target and fire upon neutrals or other non-combatants...however I will not hesitate to "pop and pod" any pilot that fires upon me. I make it a point to donate spare or personally unuseable equipment to newbie training corps like EvE Uni. For me,the fact that I have total freedom of control and choice over what morality and ethics I choose to adopt in EvE is a major triumph of the game. And yes, there are an abundance of sociopathic,self-abusing little and big turds alike that inhabit the EvE universe...who as Teala so correctly stated, need the snot beaten out of them, but don't discount and avoid the game on their account. If you do play....and they will cross your path, just keep it in the back of your mind that they are playing with one hand on the mouse and the other hand on a measuring tape. Look for the real men and women in the game and let the "boys be boys"...and by all means reduce them to atoms any chance you get. Cheers |

People who get off on griefing are emotionally stunted, small-minded morons. Pirates and scammers are a little better i suppose, but demonstrate a willingness to resort to complete selfishness to accomplish their goals. Luckily Eve does not impose an artifical moral framework on its playerbase, so you get to play in a virtual world where scumbags and small-minded twits get to express their inner selves with no constraints. Being a truly compassionate, nice person in Eve puts you at a great disadvantage. That's why it is so much more satisfying to play the game while holding yourself to a higher standard. If you can manage to maintain your humanity and compassion and still succeed in Eve, I think that is a real accomplishment. Blowing people up and stealing their stuff is one of the most obvious things to do in eve, and it holds great satisfaction for those that enjoy the pain and suffering of others. Standing against this kind of behavior will almost always put you at a disadvantage in combat and will frequently draw derisive comments from those that don't understand what you are doing... but for me it makes Eve the most rewarding gaming experience I could ever imagine. If you really believe in being kind and compassionate, come prove it by going head to head with the many grumpy little trogolodites of Eve. Being a good guy is a lot more fun when it actually means something. |

I'm planning on playing EVE real soon like...I can really see everyones perspectives on this debate. I am a fairly nice guy (unless you piss me off), I play LotRO and I roleplay, and do nice things like help noobs and what not. That is just the way I am.....but I can see why someone like me, a pretty decent person, would want to play a game like EVE and be someone we are really not. Do things we wouldn't normally do.......be a pirate, a murderer or criminal or something bad like that.....basically take our shot at doing evil things. People like me wouldn't normally do that, but a game like EVE would give us our chance to explore that "bad" side. Now, being a good person, I can also see why it would piss people off when others go out of there way to make it hard on players. But......if the "bad" person is just being bad to reach their in game goal rather than just to be a complete dicc, then I see nothing wrong with that.....that's why games like EVE are made. I still can't say how I wanna play EVE, I know if you pop my, I'm not gonna cry, I'm gonna find you and pop your ass right back....simple as that.........it's a game....have fun with it. PLAYING:DDO PLAYED:FFXI, LotRO, AoC, WAR Rohan, Mabinogi. WAITING FOR: Final Fantasy XIV, Eathrise, Star Wars:TOR, TERA... |

Yeah, the thing the get's lost here is that EVE is an mmoRPG. RPG, a Role Playing Game, a game in which you play a role. Some people want to play the role of Space Pirate. Who doesn't that appeal to? It sounds cool. You get to say "YAARRR!" a lot. You're an outlaw, living on the fringes of a frontier society. When in history has that role not been romanticized? In a like vein, some want to play the role of Mercenary Sell-Sword, or Industrial Tycoon. EVE gives you that freedom. I wouldn't mind the option of being a Colonial Governor, but that's just me. A lot of the "griefing" in EVE is just business. If you're a pirate, that's you're source of income. You also become a potential source of income for Mercs and Bounty Hunters. You pay your money and you take your chances. That being said, some people are just plain maladjusted. But you could run into them anywhere. |

Romanticized indeed. And in Eve, just like in real life, when you get down to it, pirates are selfish petty criminals, content to take the path of least resistance.. or perhaps the only path they can figure out. Hey, I'm GLAD there are pirates in the game... it would fall apart without them. Just don't kid yourself about what you are if you choose that road ; ) |
