Freelancer to me was somewhat lean when it came to substance.  It had a great base full of potential and I just wish someone added a bit more to it.  A bit more complexity would be great

It's the Discovery mod that you're referring to.

It has both single player and multi player options and the npc AI seems much improved, either that or I've got alot worse.

They are making mouse&keyboard flying mode , that is very very good (so people that play it say)

Also there is two alternative flying modes aswell. Newtonian (like in Elite and Jumpgate Classic) and Dumpener Assisted (like in Freelancer)

And you can switch them at will , creating interesting flying tactics

Jumpgate Classic already has the mouse controls.  I assume Jumpgate Evolution will just reuse that system since people definitely fly with the mouse controls in JGC.  In general I believe aiming your guns is considered somewhat easier with the mouse but flight control is better with a stick.

Jumpgate classic has old graphics sure, but you get 14 days completely free on the trial and its easy to get to an ok fighter in that time.  You don't even need to give them billing info and the download is quite quite small.  Plus you can play offline or online in the simulator and try out every single ship and every single configuration you want.

You want to know what its like?  try it out NetDevil has made it very easy.

Your controls are pretty decent IMO however the real physics feel is definitely different from say Tie Fighter games.  You can definitely get used to it and its fun, but your dogfighting style will change ALOT.

There is absolutely no way any former X-wing or freelancer players can say much about the newtonian flying style without trying it.  They may like it alot better, in some ways its less restrictive since you canfire one way while moving a different way.

Yep, I believe that's one of the best mods currently available - and they are constantly coming out with updated versions.  There's still an active community out there with a lot of servers.  The mods have really done a nice job over the years.  I think you can pick up a copy of freelancer for $10 or less in the bargin bin.   Buy it, download some mods, and join one of the servers - they are free.  It's a lot of fun for a few months.  Fun doesn't come much cheaper than that, and it'll help pass the time while Jumpgate in under development.

Is your view from inside the ship or do you see it in 3rd person from the outside? I find having a cockpit view extremely important to be immersed in space sims, which is one reason I disliked EvE, apart from combat being utterly boring.

Personally I prefer mouse + keyboard, so I'm good with that.

Both options are planned but I think everything released so far has only shown 3rd person.

I did find one "FPS" view video, but there was no cockpit textures and that sort of stuff. Anyway sounds great if they have both options available I guess.

I always prefer having the option. Cockpit view always made think of the game as more real, what devs all call immersion now, but there are times when 3rd person view comes in handy too.

if this MMO is the a "freelancer mmo" I will fall in love with this game greatly.  Freelancer was honestly one of the best if not my favorite single player sci-fi game I've played.

From what I can see this looks to be Freelancer(flight model w/ psudo physics) + Earth and Beyond(story/factions w/ names changed to protect the innocent, and not so...).

the veiws the have ingame now are 3rd and 1st person veiw, while yea you would expect 1st to be the cockpit veiw...no

it just shows you the basic HUD/UI from 1st person veiw, they're planning to have a cockpit veiw though as far as i know.

JGC has first and third person, so I think you'll be able to try both. My friend says in JGC people ended up going 3rd person as it was most advantagous during combat.

I bet, in 3rd person veiw you get to see more your left and right and you get to see abit behind you incease somebody is being sneaky, byt the looks of the vids you also get a better feel for the position of your ship inrelation to objects.

Personally i think ill still fly 1st person, something about it i just like.

Wow you never played Freelancer's multiplayer? I had good times... good times. Back in the day Freelancer had ana wesome community and some of the servers were damn lively with Alliances claiming systems, stations & territory and actually fighting over it. I remember epic battles outside of Freeport 9 & the Corsaiers planet.

Sometimes alliances would band together "jump servers" and wage cross server war on the enemies home turf 0.o;; I remember on the old Freeport 3 how a couple of us rivals called a temporary truce to fight off one such "invasion" and then launch a counterattack on their "home" server.

20+ man dogfights in asteroid fields coupled with some creative RPing lead to good times... good times.
