I just went through a 21-day trial.

Get up to a missile frigate and ran some missions/complexes.

However, this is really not a PvE game, so I won't be subbing. I am mostly a PvE casual kind of gamer looking for a second sci-fi base games.

Things go right:

- nice looking ships . .finally a sci-fi theme game.

- large universe

- complex ship rigging system offers customerization

Things go wrong (obviously more important in my case);

- little PvE content. I was running missions and guess what the agent started to give me REPEATED missions (like the dailies in WOW .. u do the same thing) after the second mission. What gives? That shows very little content. The story missions are fine but they are few and far between.

- difficulty curve is not calibrated well .. at least at this early stage of the game. I have a missile frigate and i cream everything without even trying. Everyone is saying Eve is too difficult. It is certainly NOT SO at this early game stage. I never even have my shield depleted for more than 10%.

- Combat mechanics is boring .. once again at the beginning of the game. I am sure it may be more interesting later .. but at least right now it is not. All i need to do is to target .. keep at a certain range and fire missiles. I killed whatever thrown at me so fast (usually a few hits) that i really don't need to vary my tactics. I have tried using different type of missiles .. but what is the point when everything die fast. Plus, all i need to do is lock on and fire .. nothing else. I am sure i can get a energy vampire of something .. but at this stage .. there is no need. This is in contrast to other MMO when you get and need to use additional abilities after you level up a bit.

It is quite disappointed. I hope Jumpgate Evolution will do better in these issues.

"this is really not a PvE game"

Truth.  They are adding more PvE/Storyline things to Eve but if PvE is your thing you will likely find this game lacking.  Higher level missions can be more challenging but there are just as many that are target.F1-F8.OrbitAtOptimal.Rinse.Repeat.

Nice review though.  You did the only thing one can do if they truly want to see if they like something.  Cheers and hopefully the Eve bug will kick in within a few months and you'll be back!

Yeah i know it is a pvp game and I know that it has been adding pve content. That is y I try. I don't dislike the fundamentals. CCP can .. if they have resources .. to add better pve content.

For example, they can structure encounters so that you need some e-warfare to get through.

I really want a pve sci-fi game though. I will see what happen later this year.

The next game i will try is LOTRO .. i tried it once .. don't like the loremaster class (too mundane & not magical enough) but now they have the Runekeeper and it reads like it is a fun class.

And what exactly does that have to do with this guys rather good, point on review of a game he tried thouroughly?

what exactly do you think pve involves?  what pve are you doing that does not involve shooting npcs?  oh, my bad, you can do courier missions.  but shooting npcs would be missions AND ratting, and plexes, and exploration areas.

so um, what does your post have to do with the op?

And for the thread: Yea, the PVE in EvE is very boring, makes me want to bang my head into a sharp object. But the PVP, I cannot comment on, since I haven't tried it yet (boo on me).

since someone didn't like my initial post... i'll make a different one.

at what point did you join a player corp?  everyone that advocates this game states, unequivocally, that if you're not in a player corp, you are NOT going to enjoy the game.  period.

what good would it have done you?   in a good pve-type corp (read: mission running) you'd have the opportunity to join in on lvl 4 and lvl 5 missions.  you would have an entirely different experience than running lvl 1 missions solo.

did you only run lvl 1 missions?  you can pretty much start off in a frig with decent skills on day 1, fresh out the box.  did you get to lvl 2 missions?  lvl 3s?

did you get with any corp-mates that explore and help them on exploration sites?

when you say pve, do you include mining/industry?  or is it exclusively missions?

if you were having it so easy in lvl 1s (which you should, when you can start out with up to 800,000 skill points), did you advance to lvl 2s?  lvl 3s?   that's why there's different levels of missions.

so, which player corp did you join?  because, if you're soloing this game, you won't have fun.  and yes, there are a number of player corps (heck even alliances), where you can join, and not really have any mandatory ops, nor be forced to join with others... BUT, if you're missioning,  you definitely would want to, at least, join in on some level 5 missions.

to the person that didn't like my "i shoot npcs" post... is this one more to your liking?  or do you not like it because i point out that anyone not joining a player corp is not experiencing eve in a good fashion, and that bursts your notion of this review being spot on?

if anyone decides that eve IS meant to be a single player game (in the "i'm in my first month of playing eve" context), please do site your reasons why a brand new player should not be in a player-run corp and why that would enable them to have a good time and experience eve as it's meant to be played.  mmmkay?  thanks in advance.

PVE in eve can be a jam

Scan out Missioner.. Warp/Bookmark... Jump in High speed salvager (stabber works well here actually lol) ninja salvage the guys wrecks while he is still in the mission. (dont loot!!! lol)

Profit.

Sometimes they get really mad and take a shot at you which is amusing cause then you can salvage their wreck when Concord is done with them.

whenever anyone thinks of eve they think of pvp. so why would you play it if you are only a pve player? the march 10th expansion includes new pve content and an improved new player experience, might be worth a second look?

"In EVE, no one gives a damn about a fair fight." - chafin

As Damian pointed out, there's more to PVE than running level 1 missions in a missle boat, which is easy mode I'll grant you.  Fly a gunship instead if you want more of a challenge, or take that frig of yours up into level 2 missions, you'll find a challenge real quick.

Someday, if you persevere, you might run level 4's solo, ( still lose ships occasionally in those when I'm not paying attention) and no one would ever say level 5's are easy, takes an entire fleet to conquer most of them.  Then there's complexes, which vary in difficulty as well, with the hardest (10/10) being legendary in difficulty.

Yet, in the end, all missions follow a few basic story lines, and are not their for their PVE enjoyment, but rather to provide a means to earn ISK, which is then used by most folks to buy ships to PVP with. (though some do strange things like build stuff, and set up their own stations and horrors, mine)

OP, you tried EVE, but w/o joining a player corp and skilling up a bit, you didn't really get to even the good part of the PVE side of the game, much less the PVP.

However, if you are looking for quest driven storylines and content (which I suspect you are) then EVE is truely not the game for you.

In EVE, the players make the story.

Go to lowsec and belt rat.   Not only can your frigate eventually take out most spawns(if you do it right) but you also have the fun of a pirate finding you once a week(if you do it right).

that's the whole point of getting in a good corp and  a good alliance.

what are quests/missions in other games?  "go bring this, go kill that" for NPCs... right?  what else?  well unless you're playing DDO, that's it... you get delivery missions and you get kill missions and they try to write a story into it.

in eve, you're not doing it for NPCs... and you CAN take and control territory/land.

you ever play an mmo that has a rare spawn and you and friends camp the spawn site for hours?  that's a gate camp.

ever fight the big bad boss at the end of a dungeon, and you just WISH that the boss and minions would change their tactics occasionally?  because repeating the SAME EXACT dungeon 50 times got boring after the 5th run?  that's fighting over territory, optimally invading someone else's territory.

ever have that big rare wandering boss/dragon/giant come stomp you down before you knew what was happening as you sauntered about in some new territory?  that's pirates kicking your butt the first time you got lost in low sec and were day dreaming.

everything that's in those OTHER mmos, is in eve, except it's non-scripted.... the heroes here... ARE heroes... the names you come to love and hate... they'll always be there -- there's NO OTHER SERVERS in which they can hide.

in other games, you get known by a handful of people... here, you can (and possibly will) be known by EVERYONE.

it's not scripted, it's a lot harder because you can't go to thottbot and find an article on the easy peasy way to beat this boss or that dungeon -- because you're playing against other people and the rewards (and penalties) have a lot more meaning.   you don't just lose "precious time" (normally 5 minutes or a lot less) running back to your body, taking armor/weapon damage that a single daily quest will pay for -- you have a lot more to lose AND gain.

so yeah, while the pve (although far more varied than what you get in other MMOs) might not be the best out there -- you can not compare the storylines to that of any other game -- the story lines here are just too dynamic and unpredictable.

so say what you will; but do not kid yourself -- there is far far far more history and story content in eve than any other game can dream of having...

My time in playing EvE (6 months) the pve side is a bit lacking but they do have story line missions for the different npc corps. If your looking for more in depth type pve then EvE is not for you, but i found the various jobs one can do for pve are numerous.

One you can start up a hauling servise, be a salvager, miner, trader, manufacturer of ships or other various designs. The 21 day trail helps you to understand the depth of the EvE universe, it takes way more than that to really get into the pve side of things (month).

As others have said joining a corporation is a big key to enjoying  pve in EvE.

Greetings,

EVE does not have a learning curve, it has a learning cliff.

What many people do not realize it that we do NOT want people in eve who can not handle the Gamer PhD complexity of EVE.

PvE in eve is very poor, the devs are working on it, but you miss the point if you PvE in eve.

EVE is the only mmo with universal, non-consensual PVP in one server.

To get your first clue in EVE takes about 6 months, and then you have some "ah-ha!" moments.

To everyone who is in eve or is thinking about joining eve, make sure that you get into a good corp in a good alliance in 0.0

You will learn a great deal just listening on vent to your alliance mates, and learning how to survive in the most interesting territory of PC Gaming, 0.0 in EVE

Yours in unapologetic Elitist Plasma,

Star*Dagger

No.

Man, the amount of tricks and tips that I picked up by just listening to my field commander on vent is incredible. If you want to learn how to PvP in EVE, the best way is to just tag along on ops from day 1.

I agree with StarDagger.

Eve is not a game for everyone and this is good. If it weren't Eve I probably woudn't be playing anything at all anymore. Been playing video games for 30 years now and after that long you get tired of running, jumping on turtles, shooting rockets, driving a car around a track, following the guide to get you through a raid boss and so on. Games have evolved very little over the last 10 years.

Eve is the game for gamers that have played everything else to death and back again and for this I am thankful for it.

Why do people come into EVE thinking its a PVE game? And worst, you do it w/o a corp???!

Is it just us pvp'ers that have the desire to find a Corp ASAP??? No offense to anyone but come'on this is an MMO. Why play any MMO by yourself? If you do not have real life buddies then make virtual ones ingame. This is why they dump newbies into a newbie corp.

The PVP was really makes this game truly outstanding and so does the Sandbox PVE like Investments / Crafting / Blueprints / Manifacturing / Trading. So that is what I focused on. I avoided the AFK PVE ( mining, missions, ratting) like the plague for the most part. Only did some belt ratting in 0.0 when my funds got low
