Well obesity is a big problem not only in America but in Europe too and is spreading around the world as people get wealthier.

Some people says obesity is genetic (the big boned theory) some other say that is psychological, i strongly believe is the latter.

Personally I believe that obese people should stop finding excuses and pull themselves together and do something about it, I am not very simpathetic with them.
Of course no offense to big people, but obesity has barely anything to do with Cancer or Alzahimer, it is not a cronic illness which you don't have control of and can't revert it, so I don't understand why people don't do anything about it.

Question is, do you simpathise with obese people for what they are or do you think they should bring their asses down the gym and eat less fries?
Or do you really think is a genetic disease?

There is a massive amount of scientific evidence supporting genetics causing obesity. But even those people have SOME level of control. This essentially means that anyone can maintain a healthy weight; its just genetically tougher for some.

I'd say its more related to the decreasing quality of food more than increase in wealth.  More processing, taking out the nutrients and filling foods with fat and sugar.  The body recognises these as good things but hasn't evolved to sustain as much fat/sugar as is now available.  Anything in a box is going to make you fat.  Its unhealthy and its what "poor" people live on.  (See; you and me)

Of course obese parents will make an obese child, most of the time thats the case.  Its a thyroid problem.  Although, eating correctly, and exercising does wonders to help you keep in shape, big-boned or not.

See my point is more that people should move their ass more, rather than eat less Mcdonalds.
I think generally people is getting lazier, that was the point I was trying to make

Michael Phelp consumes 10 K calories a day, still he ain't fat.............so the problem is not as much what or how much someone eats, but how very little excercise people do.
Really i don't think there are too many excuses for being obese

Exactly my point.  You need to move your ass to burn the calories, and change the mass protein into muscle.

exercise is key!

I don't think it can be just 1 thing. Its a combination of psychology/stress, diet, genetics, environment, exercise, metabolism, ingredients in food(hfcs/artificial sweeteners). I think we are starting to scratch the surface on what artificial foods are doing to our systems and genetic makeup. I think stuff is affecting us genetically and we won't notice the results until generations down the road.

Some people metabolism is slow as molasses, some are like rabbits. It slows down some too as you get older. The trick is to notice the changes and try to balance and equal stuff out. With me I had really fast metabolism until I got an office job. Then i would sit all day, eat, come back and sit, sit in traffic, get home, eat dinner, then goto sleep. Doing that for a few weeks starts changing things.

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

Obesity, which means you're REALLY fat is ALWAYS a consumption issue.  The body simply can not generate the fat unless you're providing it with enough calories to create it.   Genetics play a big part of it, but there is NO excuse for obesity.  Its more mental than anything.  YOU choose to eat the food.  Nothing forces it down your throat.  In the case of obese parents having obese kids, you need only look at their eating habits.   Its borderline child abuse.   You can still be heavy and responsible.  In most cases you don't have to be heavy at all.  You just have to understand its a 24/7 commitment for the rest of your life.  Most people choose the easy way out though.  Being healthy isn't worth the effort.

Hate to bring it up, but the Biggest Loser is all the proof you need.  Many people on that show became what they were or did it to themselves.  Afterwards, they're completely different people.  No surgery.  Just responsible eating and exercise in a positive environment.  Nothing more.

I watch overwight people at work eat horrible lunches for their body types, take the elevator instead of the stairs, drive their car across the street to another building instead of walk.  Snack on chips at the desks.  Drink Coke all day long.  Its pathetic and sad and I'm sure in their mind, they tell themselves, I'm just fat and theres nothing I can do.

Heh, I'm the say way.  I weigh 108 pounds at 5'8 (although I am younger).  Technically it's underweight, but not too much; I eat three meals a day and everything, I just don't gain much weight.

Oh, and I don't exercise often.

I think it has less to do directly with eating and exercising and more with stress/emotional state. Studies have proven that people go towards "comfort" foods when they're stressed, and then they never pull themselves out of it. Also, if you're constantly feeling stressed or rushed, you're less likely to want to walk somewhere and less likely to cook your own food. You're going to drive two blocks to the fast food place and then back to work.

Honestly though, every person is different. I focus atm less on exercise and more on eating healthy, natural foods, and while obviously I can do more, I'm a very healthy weight (most think I'm skinny, but I'm not... it's just that everyone's gotten so fat that what used to be "normal" is now "skinny"). But I've known people who eat extremely well, exercise, and still they're obese (60+ pounds overweight I believe is the technical definition of it)... and not "I'm 2% bodyfat and all my weight is muscle." It's genetics in their case.

I am sure there are exceptions here and there but for the most part, if you are fat(not husky but actually fat), then you need to put down the fork.  Here some advice for others, while at work, remember to ask the fat women when they are expecting to give birth.

If you are not being responded to directly, you are probably on my ignore list.

ah i see. exercising is good because it gets you big arms and stuff. haha yea i eat a lot but i guess thats because im still younger. thank god i exercise. But i get your point.

Its just how people are. They dont care if they get fat, they just dont feel like working out because that requires.. well.. work.  But what bothers me is them saying stuff like "Oh my parents were fat so im going to be fat. That is somewhat true, but not 100%.  Yes is your parents are larger you have a better chance of gaining a lot of weight, but if you exercise and eat healthy, you will lose weight. OHH and they dont feel like waiting for the results.

Oh and a big mac is tasty

bah!  start out doing 30 push-ups and 30-crunches morning and night time, once when you wake up, and once when you go to sleep.  And when you start to feel you can do more keep pushing.  You'll feel your arms start to get bigger, and your stomach muscles get tighter.

But, take in a lot of protein, otherwise us skinny kids dont see results.. Muscle repair requires protein, to thrive on.

Streea makes some good points.  I think it comes down to the lifestyle just as much as genetics.  If you work in an office and sit around all day then yeah, you might tack on a few pounds especially if you don't have time or can't make the effort to exercise.

I work in the construction busyness.  I run up and down stairs and ladders, carry heavy material all day long and exert myself physically on a daily basis.  Thanks to my job I can mangle an entire Double BigMac meal and not feel a thing because in the next 2 hours I'll burn most if not all of those calories.

It's easy to look at Phelps or other professional athletes or even actors and say "look they can do it" but you have to realize that it's their JOB.  It's what they do.  They devote all their waking hours to training for the Olympics or the next game or that role down the road where they have to put on 20 lbs of muscle because they don't do anything else.  It's easy to find time to exercise when you have to because your pay check depends on it.  If you made your money by being fit instead of sitting in an office you'd make an effort too.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
