A Wild West MMO would be awesome.  I'm a fan of John Wayne.  The biggest problem, as mentioned before, would be classes.  Then again, it could always be made a Sandbox MMO.  It doesn't have to have classes.

History despite its pain cannot be unlived but if faced with courage need not be lived again.

The stereotypes/beliefs of the time were based on ignorance...but it is still the way it was...and a major part of the conflict of the times...any "wild west" mmo would be lacking if  it was steamrolled over with "PC" ideals.

There is another thread that was created in the Developers Corner on the subject of a Wild West MMO.

http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/219287

The title of the thread is "An Old American Wild West MMO." by decade85

The OP really had some ideas running and maybe you and him could discuss the subject further on some concepts that would interest you and other fans of that particular sub-genre. I believe he even started a poll, "Would you play a game based in the American Wild West?"

Amyways, I think it would be nice to see more people interested in a MMO such as the Wild West and to see just how far it may go.

Settlers
Law men
Railroad men

I could go on, bands of criminals setting up hideouts in the wilderness, lawmen tracking them down etc. A good theme for a sandbox game.

I've played some awful old west games although.

I quote you...and also respond to the post just before yours.....This is what I had in mind...Imagine..you homestead...buy a few head of cattle...through disease and famine you manage to become a great rancher/cowboy...you have a hundred head raised ......through months of "grinding"....you're making a decent living and providing a product. You hire several men under you....npcs maybe....how about real characters...this could almost be a type of guild....you could have various guild types...ranchers...outlaws...business owners...maybe the representatives of your town form a guild..the mayor..sheriff and such. Of course..each "guild" would be called something other than guild.   Now imagine some npc/players....form a group of  cherokess/banditos/outlaws and steal your cattle...you and your men can group to hunt them down...or you could hire a group to hunt them down...with dead or alive rewards. Maybe one of the perpetrators was just broken out of prison...a posse could be group. You could also play a laundry service for all I care...an opium dealer...big on the west coast then...a gambler....barkeep....big banker...lawmen..bounty hunter...railroad worker or owner. The graphics wouldn't even have to be top notch...just very involved crafting ...an active world in general....maybe yoiu could even live in the city.and work odd jobs to save up and move out west....who knows...endless.  possibilites..i dream.

I want to play a game where I can be a nigger in mid 1800s. Main quest will be me getting to northern states with cowboys chasing my ass and big guns. I can also team up with other players and gank loner white dudes, take their guns and continue.

Actually a lot of cowboys were free blacks.

The tricky part about a Western game is that it spans from 1800 to 1900 pretty much anywhere west of the Mississippi.

What's tricky about that?  From the frozen lands of Canada down to the deserts of Mexico, from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean; that is a good-sized world map right there.  The time period doesn't need to be perfectly situated at any spot, just so long as the best bits are taken for gameplay balance and enjoyment purposes.

A Wild West MMO loosely based on reality would be cool.  A strict historical simulation would not.

Well the west changed radically in that time. I mean a developer has to pick a time and area assuming they don't have the resources to make world the size of the western half of North America and have an aging world. I mean do you do covered wagon settling, when the railroads started moving in, the Missouri compromise and the during the Civil War, post civil war, gold strikes. I mean a lot happened over that 100 years, there is a lot of resources to draw from. I suppose if its loosely based on reality you could throw a lot more in than if it was stick historical. Western Myth is a lot more exciting than the real thing anyway.

I agree...I think it should start at some point..with familiar historical sites and figures...but players can change history...maybe you join butch and sundance ,,,and kill all the policia. Maybe you shoot pat garrett b/4 he kills Billy the Kid...or organize an army to side with George Custer.....or just raise a family in your own little corner.

I don't know how this post should be taken. Whether it was worded to get a flame response..idk. It does reflect how hard it would be to make an mmo without watering down what was reality at the time.  Sure...african americans were called the "n" word..probably more often than not by many other nationalities/ethnicities. Just as similiarly distasteful terms were applied to other races/nationalities. It would almost have to be an alien world in a time of it's history that mirrors the wild west times of  america. Because the backlash of the offended would be too great.. For some reason..its acceptable to play fantasy/alien races that could easily be compared to real world stereotypes..than to just accept what the world was like in more ignorant times and play a game. I can understand both sides.

Tombstone Online!!!!   W000T!!!

No, seriously....provided there were enough sandbox elements and it wasn't just another themepark game, I would totally play a western MMO.

Man..think of the gunslinging duels in the middle of the street, bank robbing, highwaymen, lynch mobs....

FUN!!
