Can someone give me an idea of what this game is like.

Is it open PVP?

Quest bassed?

Can I lvl my character up by just leaving noob area and fighting some mobs?

What is the population of this game like?

Thanks a lot, would really appreciate some answers to this.

If anyone has a trial\buddy key that they want to give up let me know. Thanks =)

you can get open pvp on the pvp servers and realm versus realm in the designated pvp zones on normal servers.

you can lvl by doing normal quest or by doing pvp      -mix and match as you like.

some servers are empthy, some are quite active. join the active ones ;)

The end game is heavily into pvp but there are also some "raid-dungeons"  both have a bright future with more and more features and contend bbeeing added to it.

yeah   -I like it

Not quite. Its a PvE game with open PvP playpens set to one side which you can wander into and fight players if you choose to.......thats assuming you can find other enemy players who have also decided to wander into them at the same time of course.

The PvP elements dont really have any major impact on the players who arent participating in them though so dont expect anything meaningful or exciting such as villages being destroyed or great strategic wars that effect your nation. Its all purely casual and optional.

There are also instanced battlegrounds you can hop into just like in WoW except you can join a queue for them from anywhere.

Quest bassed?

Sort of. Like everything in this game its optional. The quests are there and you can grind your way through them if you choose......or you can just ignore them. The AI for the mobs is pretty awful though and the game highlights everything for you on the map so dont expect anything challenging.

There are public quests which are a nice addition. You can just wander into an area and get involved with killing 100 imps or whatever along with other players who will be doing the same. These PQs are divided into mutliple stages so the next stage will be something like "kill 100 more imps and also kill 10 bigger imps" followed by "destroy 20 imp holes" followed by "kill the imp lord and his 3 imp henchmen". Then the PQ restets and you do it all over again.

There are quite a lot of PQs. Its all highly exciting stuff.

Can I lvl my character up by just leaving noob area and fighting some mobs?

Yeah if you want to. You can follow the levelling treadmill in whatever way you like, be it PvE quests, PvE mob bashing or PvP player bashing.

What is the population of this game like?

It depends on the server. Many of them had minimal populations when I quit my subscription. It might be a bit better now. Basicly because WAR is practicly divided into 3 types of game (PvE, scenarios and open PvP) it means the population on each server is rather split up. Add to this the fact that each area of the game is divided up into zones specific to the characters level and it gets split up even more.

Thanks a lot, would really appreciate some answers to this.

You can level through quests, PvP or just killing mobs.  There isn't anything like a noob island, You start in the same world as everyone else, just in the lowest level part of it.

If you feel like doing PvE there are more than enough quests to take you to top level.  There are also public quests, where anyone can come in to the area and work on the goals together, without being grouped.  In my experience, when we are doing a public quest and someone else comes by to work on it, they just join the group anyway.  Groups are open so they can just add themselves.  If the group gets full, you can just convert to a warband and then you have room for 24 players.  Unlike some games, anything you can do with a group, you can do with a warband.  You can get good gear and XP from quests, or just killing mobs, a little better gear from public quests.

The game really shines in PvP, IMO.  You could level all the way up strictly through PvP and get top end gear in the process.  There are open RvR servers, where you can attack anyone from the opposing realm, but most people play on core rules servers.  Those servers have the PvE areas for each realm, where you can't be attacked by other players and RvR areas between them where you can attack or be attacked by anyone of the opposing realm.  The RvR areas have a couple of battlefield objectives to that provide bonuses and a keep or castle to fight over control of.

The RvR areas are divided up in to 4 tiers for the different levels.  You can fight in a tier above your level range, but not below.  Everyone entering a tier of the appropriate level gets a bonus to their HP to even the field a bit.  Level still makes a pretty big difference in effectiveness, but you are only dealing with people within the 10 level range... so it isn't too bad. Whenever I level out of a tier, I usually focus on PvE until I get in to the middle of the level range.  Otherwise I am a pretty big target.

The RvR combat is very active, at least on my server.  I think it's pretty good on all the servers sine they offered transfers from low to medium pop servers, and added in the RvR gear rewards.  Each region in each tier has it's own set of RvR gear rewards, and the gear is top notch for it's level range.  I can log on pretty much any time of day and find a warband rolling around somewhere doing RvR.  You can fly between the different RvR zones, so it only takes a few minutes from logging in to get to the action.

If you can't tell.  I love the game.  I haven't had this much fun playing an MMO, or a multi-player game of any kind for a long time.  I think the game can really only go uphill from here, and it's already great.  If you haven't gotten one yet, send me your name and email in a PM and I'll hook you up with a buddy key.

Looks like Cards and Raves for the Super Bowl... or maybe they should call it the "Who Cares? Bowl" this year. ;)

Definitely  Warhammer. AoC although with beatiful graphics lacks people and is instanced.

In WAR there's a lot of stuff to do like Public Quests, RvR, Scenarios (instant battlegrounds), PvE questing (not very good although story wise really well written) and sieges.

Thing is,  WAR is an amusement park. You won't be doing endless exploration, crafting, building your house, etc. Its a constant battle wether with players or mobs.

Its also important to pick up the right (populated) server so check forums at warhammeralliance.com. This game doesnt exist without other players and solo content is reduced to absolute minimum (one of the things i really like about this game).

Give it a try, its pretty fast, less forgiving than WoW and pits you against other players straight from the beginning.

I'll try it if I get a buddy key thing.

Ultimately I just want Darkfall to be what they say it is going to be. But I don't think anyone really know how that game will turn out so I'm not going to get my hopes up.

I found a game called Atlantica Online, tried it and left WAR, Atlantica is a hidden gem in the mess of MMO's out today.

When I said i had "time", i meant virtual time, i got no RL "time" for you.

Buddy Key on the way. :)

I can personally recommend the Red Eye Mountain server.  We have a good balance or Order vs Destro, and a very active RvR playerbase.

I tried Atlantica for about 5 mins and quit.

Maybe I did not give it a good enough change but to me it felt like a real generic asian mmo.

I already did that stuff with Knight Online and am done with it. If it really is a seriously good game, I might possibly give it another shot, still got it installed. Just did not look appealing from the very start.

I want to add here that you shouldn't base your opinion too much on what people are saying who quit the game shortly after launch.  The Game was decent at launch, but RvR activity was abysmal and server populations were all over the place.  Mythic made the right adjustments to fix both of those issues.

They offered free server transfers from low to medium pop servers, even allowing guilds to transfer with their progress.  Anyone still playing on a low pop server is doing it by choice... with no one to blame but themselves.

People were also heavily running scenarios, which pulls players out of the open world.  They added a separate influence system with it's own rewards for open world RvR and people ARE playing it now.  This game isn't being played now the same way it was at launch.  If you bought it then and didn't like it for any of the reasons i mentioned, it is worth a second look.  It only costs you 15 bucks to prove me wrong.  Small price to pay.... ;)

OP, before I say anything what kind of games do you like playing?  I prefer AoC over WAR by a clear mile but it depends on what you are looking for and also the rig you run.  e.g. You can run WAR pretty well on most machines.  AoC is scaleable but you want to see it in its best form.

Well I'm not sure if either of those games really fit my preference.

The last MMO I enjoyed playing was Ultima Online. That should pretty much sum it up lol. Basically I'm looking for Darkfall to be good but I'm not going to get too excited over it.

I'm pretty sure I can run about any game out there atm.

I never played Ultima Online but I know a bit about it from my mates.  Have you tried LotR?  It may be a close fit for what you want. I don't think WAR or AoC are deep enough on the RP or craft etc.  WAR is a little one dimensional.  Never tried a non PvP server in AoC but the PvP servers can be rough if you don't like PvP.

I played LOTRO to 50, but there were a couple of issues i couldn't make peace with.  First was the total lack of PvP.  Yeah, I know there is monster play, but that just wasn't an acceptable substitute for me.  I was also unhappy with the time it takes to advance without grinding out quests.  Since most of the quests are in long chains, it was hard to find people who wanted to group for them.

The bigger issue I had was with all the ugly, brightly colored, patchy clown gear everyone has to wear.. and I do mean everyone.  Some of the plate armor is OK looking, but all the medium and cloth armor looks like hobo clown costumes to me.  Beautiful world, decent character models, ugly gear abound.

I also wasn't crazy about fighting the same mobs in different colors from 1 to 50.  A boar is a boar is a bore... even if it's name changes every few levels.  I know that these last two issues are lore related, but that doesn't make them any less annoying to me.

I dropped aoc out of not really enjoying the game and the bugs that were present. I have honestly haven't played a lot of war because of whatever reason I cannot get into it. I resubbed to AoC a little over a month ago and am loving it. It's a hard game to get into because, at least for me, you really have to take the time to learn your class as well as others and take  a lot of time practicing and experimenting to be and good at the pvp scenarious available. I've gotten better and keep getting better to the point where it feels like I'm still leveling because of the progression of my skill at playing my character and my ablility to more consistantly win fights. I think it is now a really good game and am looking forward to the patch which should add a good amount of content. Four sieges happened this weekend and a couple guilds lost their battle keeps and the stat buff associated with having one. Go on the aoc forum if you want to see how people feel about the game. I have two friends though that prefer War to Aoc, though they haven't played it too recently, so it's not like my opinion is objective. I say get a buddy key, pm me and I'll check to see if I can find mine, and give war a shot and make up your own mind. Good luck.
