I hope Funcom finds itself on the brink of ruin at some point, scraping by, so that they can serve as an example of what happens when a company releases a game in a horrific state.  Maybe they can recover after that point, possibly by trying to make amends with the hundreds of thousands they scammed at launch.

I hope Darkfall is as polished, game-engine wise, as the claims are, and that as a result it is extremely successful.  Having the polar opposites within the same year would help the MMO industry, so people could look and say "Ok look at how these guys screwed up and went under, and those guys were anal about every detail and are extremely successful".  Just a shame that AoC is the failure in this case, I had hopes for it when I followed it and got it, and those hopes were murdered horribly.

Darkfall will fail hard.30 k subs top.It looks like crap, the gameplay looks like crap.AoC is a game for the future,Darkfall is a game for a few hc fans.Wtf is it anyway?A mmo-fps?Trust me,it's not for the masses.

Something kids today fail to realize is that it's not graphics that make a game.  Darkfall will likely stay small because of the PvP aspect but I'll play a game that runs properly and looks like Quake 2, over a bug-infested game that looks like Crysis.

The posts in this thread are just painful though, be it from trolls or blind fanboys like Avery or Bear.

AoC at 270k subs?  Really?  I hate to break it to you, but the servers are not bustling like at launch, and you're suggesting a game whose servers are, on average, much less activate than even Warhammer's server, has more players than almost every other western P2P MMO out there?  Really?  For you people jumping all over the x-fire crap, AoC dropped to #58 today.  Stop treating daily changes as good/bad indicators for a game.  I doubt AoC's players are robots and trying to use the figures there is just sad, regardless of who you are.

EVE Online was over 47k players on TQ last weekend, and is something like 240-250k players (as CCP actually releases their sub numbers).  If you people are going to even THINK of using x-fire to talk about AoC's success, then you can use EVe as your control to find your 'real sub numbers'.  AoC is probably around 125-150k at most currently, not that Funcom will ever willingly release details about its account numbers, as they've said themselves.

I hope DarkFall do well even though I will not test till much later. But they better have the control of the game in place. If graphics is bad that is one thing, but if animations and resposiveness of the controls are clunky, the game is dead. Lets keep hope high though.

BTW heard the game is postponed for another couple of months.

When we said 270k sub we, at least the people that try to estimate subs number properly, are talking about world wide. I personally believe that in NA AoC has between 50k-100k while in EU it has slightly higher about 60k-120k. Not bad and about on par with most games outside WoW. When the game launches in other regions theres no reason to think that AoC couldn't pull back up to 300k world wide.

Well it's another 3 month record on Xfire for a Wednesday (and this is with all EU down for 24 hours). When weekend comes and both EU and US is on with all the returned players AoC is back in the 30's. Not to brag about it, but even the most negative trolls would have to realize that AoC is doing ok then. www.xfire.com/games/aoc/Age_of_Conan_Hyborian_Adventures/

Yep.  AOC is doing much better.  A little perspective

#1   WOW                  = 380,500
#12  EVE                    =   19,800
#17  War                    =    13,500
#21  LotR                   =     9,500
#44  Twelve Sky       =      4,700
#45  AOC                   =      4,600

What the heck is Twelve Sky???

AOC is doing everything right.     Server mergers,  $2 boxes for a free month, and soon they'll have the free month for returning players.   Sounds like as soon as the game goes free, it will be right up there with FlyFF ( # 24)  and maplestory (#32) as the most popular free games on the market

For Christ sake, you don't have to be such a intense hater that regardless of what happens, you have to find something negative to say. Relax, activity will probably drop off again at some point and you can turn the trollometer right back to max when that happens. Just a friendly advice bud.

And just to make you feel better, yes there is indeed nothing that can compete with your game (WOW) populationwise. We know that and we also know that WOW probably will be even bigger by next year. However, don't let this get in the way for being happy with players of other MMOs when things are looking a bit up for them. Peace.

I promise I'll stop posting the full story, when you stop posting half the story.   The box is basically free now, of course people are going to play it more than when it was $40.  I even put in about 10 hours over the past week.

Let's face it at release AoC couldn't get any worse.

But 8months on the game is getting there, i would advise anyone who quit along time ago to take another look.

The sound effects, music and grapics are amazing and with 80% of the bugs gone AoC will servive.

You are only posting half the story. Retail, the box is still $31.99. The people selling it for $2 are generally indie game shops who have to get rid of their stock before taxes are calculated. Does this mean AoC is doing "great" or the same as it was at launch - NO. But what it does mean is that you can't say the game will go F2P just based of the fact that you can pick up a copy for $2.

Amazon.com sells it for $30, and it is currently at like #1500 on their sales chart.   Saying the retail box is $31 is misleading, because nobody is buying it at that price.   Play.com has it for $15, but it takes about 2 mins to find it for less than $2.

like you said.. at this point retailers are just trying to get rid of their stock..... which makes it highly unlikely they are going to be ording more boxes.  Once you are no longer recieving order from retailers, it would really be smart for Funcom to offer the game as a free download, and then try and get subscriptions after the free month.  Which is probably what is coming in the next month.  Free client download with free month for new players, and a free month for returning players and then try and hold on to subscribers.

Free client download with free month for new players, and a free month for returning players and then try and hold on to subscribers.

...and so what ?

Like it or not, AoC will survive, people will continue to play whatever some &^*% may think or not.If you can`t understand and accept that then you really need some help.

Interesting to see 645 US players on Xfire yesterday. The day before it was >800 players for EU. All together it will make Xfire player numbers about 1400 for this weekend. Would not be surprised if we see AoC up there on #39 or # 40 by end of the weekend.

Hey, come on..  Let AOC fans have their victories where they get them.   If they want to think of having 1/4 the population as LotRO as an acheivement, don't ruin their fun.

But to be honest..  AOC is starting to cheat like they did with that 'vote' a few weeks ago.  This is a post from the AOC forum about Xfire

"Installed it for one purpose only, to try and bump AoC up on the Xfire ranking"

Pretty soon Famine will be making a post and some player will give a link to where you can download xfire.

The only time you run out of chances is when you stop taking them.

But there is one problem. Funcom estimated that 150K subs was needed just to be in balance budgetwise. And considering they have a large debt if they don't make money of AoC it puts the future of Funcom at risk, as their financial report specified that future Funcom profits depended on AoC subscriptions. Funcom also said that should AoC have 100K subs it would be deemed a failed project.

The population is going up slowly since they announced server merges, but the game is STILL void of content at high level.

I think the same people who left because of that are quickly going to get bored again and head back to WoW/WAR.   Making the population to thin again and putting them back where they started.

I think this is a last ditch by Funcom :/

#45

and gameing is up 16% (5513/4758) since last friday, also number of players are up with like 14% (1279/1120). Very fun to see that many players getting back into the game. Also, was playing on fresh start server yesterday and population is picking very nicely up.

Looking on these numbers I would expect close to or over 7000 gaming hours and over 1300 Xplayers tomorrow. That will make AoC #39 on that damn Xfire list.

The game is not void of high level contant as you both have several end game group instances and several raid dungeons, in addition to the epic instances of normal zones. Thats not void. In addition, the new lvl 80 solo and lvl 80 group dungeon was opened on testlive this weekend, so in a couple of weeks there will be even more.

Yep. That pretty much sums it up.

And of course, as of this thread...

An increase of 2 spots = "trend showing subs are increasing"

A decrease of those same 2 spots = "standard deviation"

Classic double-standard OrionMan logic, right in line with how he denounced XFire as a legitimate way to gauge the game's popularity when the numbers don't look good for AoC. He then does a complete 180 and touts them as proof of the game doing better when they go up a bit.

The hypocrisy and obnoxiously blatant display of intellectual dishonesty around this game some of its fans (not all) has always been noteworthy.

I see some of the usual suspects are still at it.
