Past, present, or future...

I've played AC1, AC2, Guild Wars, Planetside, D&D Online (briefly), Shadowbane, L2, FFXI, AoC, WoW, a bunch of F2P games, etc.

Things I liked: Sandbox (AC1), Skills(AC1), Levels, Good Balance of PvE and PvP content, Crafting thats worth my time, Unique character development and customization.

Things I didn't like: Rehashed content, WoW clones, Questhelper or "waypoints" being integrated, Being too focused on one aspect of the game, Being pigeon-holed into a role, Too easy.

Things I'm not exactly sure about: Twitch combat system, Not having levels

Theres a few things I should say about the Twitch combat system.  I play MMOs for the content, the immersion, and the RPG feeling where I can compete and cooperate with and against other people.  If I feel like the game is too much like an FPS, it takes away from that.  Now I'm not saying that the system is a bad thing.  What I'm saying is, if not implimented properly, it could potentially ruin the experience, and I don't think I'm alone in my thoughts on this.

I consider myself an old-fashion gamer.  I enjoy turn-based games and others that require some thought, planning, tactics, and part of my cunning.

Theres nothing I despise more than what the gaming industry, not just the MMORPG genre has turned into.  That being, short 4 hour games with lots of bells and whistles to hold the attention of even the most ADD-ridden problem child.  With respect to the genre, I'm tired of WoW and WoW clones.  I want that feeling I got when I first played Asheron's Call, you know the one.

So please, I implore you fellow gaming gods, shower me with your suggestions and comments.

There is EVE Online, the PC Gamers PhD

and then there is everything else, which are mere shadows.

Fantasy has always interested me more than Sci-Fi MMOs, but perhaps it's time I try one.

Am I alone in feeling the dry spell in the genre?

Might I suggest EvE Online and perhaps Vanguard.? You seem to have played most all others... Currently Playing these 2 and EvE...Ahhh nothing else quite compares but untill you figure things out you will be quite bored the first 4 months or so . Vanguard......... at first looks a lot like WoW as far as the interface goes..But the gameplay and graphics are a lot better, if you have the computer to run it in all it's splendor. Great replay value. lacking in pvp though. Oh and then there is Ryzom which is defenitly Unique!!

Hate to burst your bubble but that feeling you got when you first popped your mmorpg cherry you will never find again. The thing to focus on is just having fun. What kind of game can you pick up and play and just enjoy? Well thats completely up to you. Seems like you have already tried a healthy amount of different MMOs out there and i don't think you are going to find some great hidden gem that noone is talking about.

Hmm, another vote for EVE.  Running Vanguard wouldn't be a problem, perhaps I'll look into it.

Keep 'em coming guys

When the voices of the players are silenced, silently like sheep we will be lead to the slaughter.

IF you don't mind playing f2p games take a look at Cabal Online. It is one of the best mmorpg's I have seen in some time. The game is still in open beta, that means you can become a member of the high level elite that so many struggle to reach and never do. The game has good graphics and many many quests. It also has PvP so no matter what you like it has something for you. Give it a try.

Btw I have played EVE. It is a great game but the monthly costs to play has made it diffcult to justify in this current economic enviroment.

There are several more sci-fi mmos coming, each with their own problems.

Jumpgate Evolution with twitch, which turns off many people.

Infinity with the fact that it has little funding and a VERY small group of developers.

Star Trek Online which omits the most important race in Star Trek : The Romulans.

I am looking forward to at least trying out all of the above, and wish all of the developers luck.  Having said that, by the time the above launch CCP (the devs of EVE) will have had 6 or more years head start.

My singular regret with EVE is that I hadn't started sooner, that someone hadn't taken me by the lapels and shaken me and yelled at the top of his lungs "PLAY THIS GAME!!"

Its like working out or getting an advanced degree, no one can force you or inspire you.  You have to find it on your own, maybe this post will go some small way to you entering the most complex universe ever modeled.

If you need any help when you get in, evemail my character "Star Dagger".  Ill be able to point you in the right direction.

Yours in Advanced Gaming Plasma,

Star*Dagger

Perhaps, but really I'm getting some suggestions from people that may have felt the same way I do, or just know of MMOs I haven't played that fit into what I want out of one.

I haven't heard much about Cabal Online, but I'll definitely have a look-see.  P2P games don't bother me too much, as I've played a bunch.  As long as it keeps me immersed and I enjoy playing, I don't mind shelling out a few bucks a month.

Thank you for your suggestion

Help someone who can not return the favor.

If you don't mind open PvP I suggest EVE Online and Eternal Lands. If you do then Ryzom is my only suggestion. Don't dismiss EL right away because of its graphics though because they haven't been updated on this site. You can find screenshots on their website.

Darkfall, Mortal Online, Earthrise, The Chronicles of Spellborn.  All coming soon.   For now I enjoy Atlantica for F2P fun.
