many are calling this the spiritual successor to swg.

A unique post-apocalyptic setting where the cloned remnants of mankind battle to survive and rebuild. Yet while humanity may have evolved, human nature remains as treacherous as ever…
Highly customizable characters with over 100 different skills, abilities, and tactics. No artificial "class" restrictions get in the way of making the character you want.
Fast-paced action combat featuring dynamic targeting, customizable power armor, huge mechanized exoskeletons, and hundreds of high-tech weapons.
Sophisticated Player versus Player (PvP) mechanics that let you fight for the established order, join the revolutionary underground, or carve your own bloody path as an independent criminal.
Territorial conquest and defense that matters. In your domain, you create your own rules – or let anarchy reign.
Character progression that keeps you advancing in your career even when you’re not logged in.
An advanced market-based economy with in-game supply and demand based on player activities.
Deep crafting mechanics that let you design and manufacture unique items from customizable blueprints and raw resources.

Everything but the forced PvP seems to be a good chance to be a successor to SWG. Unfortunately the forced PvP will turn it into a gankster haven, which will make it feel nothing like SWG. Gank games can never have the community that SWG had.

I will try it out either way because I am curious, but I think the PvP system will kill it for me.

Well, those were fantasy games so it simply wasn't true from the get-go.

Earthrise and Fallen Earth are really the only MMO's I have any hope for.  They are trying to break out of the theme-park mold, and if one of them can get the recipe right, we may have another "EVE".  A fantastic, rich, interesting niche game that caters to people who aren't afraid of difficult play, and who crave more than just combat.

EVE Online post Ambulation (happening this year) will be the dream MMO for former SWG players.

EVE is harsher than most any game (yes there are gankers) but it by far has the most freedom.

Forced PvP is pretty much a deal breaker for me - there is not much fun being on the wrong end of a gank-a-thon. If there is a PvE server, or a choice in going PvP, then I may consider this game more seriously.

Yup, something like a TEF system would bring me fully into the fold. I love to PvP, but only when I am in the mood.

I just don't like the community that forced PvP fosters; like the people on WoW's PvP servers. Not nice people. I don't wanna play in a world with such people. Why live in a virtual reality where the people are less mature and nastier than real life? Yuck.

is this game going to use "forced " pvp? can a person just pve?
You can totally go through Earthrise doing PvE content. As Valin said there will be zones that are safer and have higher security. If a zone does not have the security you are looking for you can make an investment into making that zone safer. With the investment you make the guards stronger and also increase the amount of guards.

But back to PvE content. Earthrise will have a very deep main storyline or so we have been told. There also will be random generated quests that you can pick up at terminals.

If the PvP works like it does in EvE that might be ok...in EvE you can technically attack another player anywhere but each zone has a security rating and there are severe consequences for attacking another player in high security zones.

I'll believe it when I see it. I do plan to try the game, but if all the good stuff requires you to enter forced PvP areas, I won't enjoy the game. Again, it's not even so much that I personally dislike PvP or even forced PvP, I don't like the bad 'community" such design fosters.

From what it sounds like, either you put up with a heavy grind and  miss out on a lot, or you accept gank squads. That sounds pretty crappy to me.

I hope I'm wrong but that's how it sounds from what has been written thus far.

PVP only games will never work.  Closest thing to one that does is EVE, but even EVE has a place for people who don't want to constantly pvp to live: Empire High-Sec space.  High-Sec space is safer, not safe, but you have to be a moron to NOT be safe there.  EVE punishes laziness and stupidity, something that modern WOW era MMORPGs seriously lack.

well it sounds similar to eve to me. areas that are "enter at your own risk" and safe zones with a few "medium risk" areas in between.  also the idea of paying some in game money to increase the amount of guards sounds like a interesting money sink i havent seen before.

can i specialize and just be a crafter ? Or is it like Fallen Earth skill system where anyone with the time can take all skills ?

The brilliance of Star Wars Galaxies was I had a limit of 250 skill points to spend. So if I specialized as a master droid engineer / master artisan I didnt have many points left to spend for combat (if any).

This meant I wasnt like everyone else. Choosing a non-combat skill weakened your combat options as it should be. In games like Fallen Earth there is no limit to the number of skills you can learn. So if you have the time you could master all crafting and combat skills.

I have yet to find a single MMO where crafting was a specialty that one could exclusively do. I want a game where my crafted goods are sought after. Not a game where i cant sell crap because everyone else can make it too

If Im a crafter I shouldnt be able to master rifles as well. And fyi this system only works if you limit the game to 1-2 toons per server. If you allow 5-10 toons then the same problem arises. Players will just make an alt crafter toon and again my goods dont sell.

Interdependance cant be achieved any other way

Pretty much OP errr Suske   I would have to say Earthrise may be as close as you get to the pre-cu game you are looking for. Darkfail is fail, Fallen Earth is fail, Dark & Light was fail.  Beta is open for this right now. Maybe you all should check it out.
