To be honest i'd wait, my feeling overall is the game is it's walking on the edge of an abyss and just a small nudge could send it toppleing into that abyss never to be seen again.

Best advice would be, try and get a trial key and try it that way before deciding to buy it.

Honestly It doesn't appeal to everyone.

I play it myself and I won't even recommend it to my friends untill i have can help them via trial keys so they can decide for themselves.

IM waiting until they add the other two classes and tweak crafting, quests/dungeons and add the other cities in before I try it again. I played it for two months and I enjoyed it.

I would rather be paying for  and playing Eve so ill check back later on.

Right now dungeons are lacking none PQ quests are lacking, Crafting needs some love and the other cities need to be added even if they arent raidable it would be good for questing and dungeons.

Why would I play a pathetic themepark MMO when I could enjoy a masterpiece like Mass Effect, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Dragon Age?

Totally unfounded but, who knows!

Unless WAR still has more then half of its subs I believe FFXI is the most popular MMO in NA/Euro other then WoW.

I know lotro is near the 200k mark and AoC can't be over 200k either.

Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

I never add in Eve with these other mmos, Personally I feel eve should be classified as a different MMO genre all together. Its a totally different type of game Ill put eve head to head with games like Jumpgate and STO later in the year.

But yeah if you wanna get technical yes Eve is up there right behind WoWs bazillion players and FFXI 500k+.

Don't take this as a knock but how do you figure this? Warhammer sold like 1.2 million copies by November, and had like 800k subscribers. I also saw a post on this site linking to a database that showed over 1 million active subscriptions.

I got the first part of the info from here:

1.2 million copies - sold to retailers, not end users (customers)

800K subscribers - during people's first FREE month of play, much lower now

1 million active subscribers - totally wrong. I think what you are refering too was 1 million characters created. Each account could have 10 characters.

I never wish any game to have low sub numbers (unless it pisses me off with something evil like a cash shop ./stares at SoE)

I thought WAR was a good game and if it has that many subs still im happy for all of you guys that enjoy it.

It still pisses me off that noone is playing LotRO when that game is stellar also.

I was going to try LoTR. I like playing the Bad side (Horde on WoW and Chaos on WAR). Can you play the Orki (or whatever they are called)?

There is this thing called "Player vs. Monster" where you can play as Orcs, wolves, spiders, or some of the other "bad" guys. However it's very limited and pretty shallow PvP-wise, and all the PvE is focused on the "good" guys, like Dwarves, Hobbits, Elves, and Men.

*Points to my avatar picture, and then notes you said "Chaos in WAR"...*

A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

I say but it now, no need to wait.

I played at launch, and for a while I thought it might be another game that I was bored with after the first month.  It was partially my fault for plying it strictly as a PvE game, but that is how I always played MMOs in the past.   I started to dip my foot in to RvR with scenarios and found out I really enjoyed the PvP action in this game.  Unfortunately at launch there wasn't any open RvR action to speak of.

Since they added area influence for open RvR, there is a constant rolling battle across all the tiers.  I can log in any time of day and find a group rolling battlefield objectives, sieging or defending keeps.  I have really not enjoyed a game this much in a long time.  I'm enjoying it so much that I don't have time to keep up with the forums here. So I don't know what the supposed "problems" with the game are.  I just know I have fun playing, I never feel like it's a grind and I get phat loot as a bonus.

I'm going to copy a post I made in my guild forum yesterday, rather than type it all again. ;)  If you decide to get the game and you roll an order character look for me on the Red Eye Mountain server... if you roll destruction look out for me. ;)

/ Edit after reading the whole thread.....  I want to point out that most of what people are complaining about from launch is already corrected.  There wasn't much incentive to do open world RvR, because it was easier to obtain RvR rewards through running scenarios over and over.  The simple solution was to give open RvR it's own influence and rewards.  You still gain renown from any kind of RvR, but you also gain area influence for each region in open RvR.

As far as RvR participation goes, what WAR is right now is what I'd hoped for in DAoC.

=====================

=====================

I can't believe no one wants to play this game with us. It really does kick ass. It took a while, a server transfer and a re-roll for the game to really grow on me.... but now I love it. I haven't enjoyed a game this much in years. Maybe since we were playing guild wars, and that was woefully brief.

Since launch they added a separate influence system for open world RvR, and it completely changed how people are playing the game. I have been playing 5 or 6.. or 12 hours a day doing Keep siege and defense pretty much all the time.

The open party system is great. No standing around yelling for what you need. Just start playing and the group fills up as you go along. We always start out playing with our group of three and we usually have a full warband of 24 within 10 or 15 minutes. Then we just roll through the maps taking keeps and trying to hold them, sometimes getting our asses handed to us, but generally handing out more than we receive.

Each RvR region has it's own influence rewards and they are different for each area in a tier, so if you spend time in each one you end up with some bad ass purple gear, or gold gear if you roll good after a keep siege. Your renown goes up with kills, caps and defense too, so you get several different choices on gear just from RvR.

I'm having so much fun playing, I dont even care if I level. It's just a pleasant side effect. I was starting to think i was just bored with MMOs all together, but it turns out I was just bored with stupid quests. Quests designed with the sole purpose of making me spend time to buy a reward. Then I could use that reward to make me slightly more effective while I spend some more of my time to buy a marginally better reward again. Now, I just want to log on and kick some Destro out of our keeps, or better yet, out of theirs. All the same carrots exist to motivate me, but I dont have to mindlessly jump through hoops to get them.

If haven't played the game yet, I have some free trial codes I can give out. I'll even roll an alt to level with you. The RvR is pretty good at every level right now. If you have played, it only costs 15 bucks to see how much better it is now than it was at launch. [/quote]

HAHAHA! Ascension08. I like the Avatar. I would love to see you on the battlefield. I play on Zolkmar (I did just reroll my main. so I am only lvl 13 right now) but want to move to a ORvR server. Look for the Maruader with your buddies bodies laying at my feet. =P (J/K)

Hey Metal. Is it hard to get rolling from square one in EVE? I have heard nothing but good things about it but I am sceptical due to the people telling me that you have to have an active sub for at least a yr before you can go out and do anything without getting ganked. Is any of that true?

I still don't see anything to refute what Mythic claimed in November. They had 800k subs. That was pretty well beyond the 1st month trial for people who bought at launch.

They have likely lost some players, and gained others. I've been in game lately, and it's far from a ghost town. Badlands server has near instant Scneario queues, with ORvR in at least the first 3 Tiers all over the place.

Warcraft Realms is showing 200k active subscribers through their census addon, and I'm pretty sure that is a low estimate considering the addon is still in Beta.

I think the only thing we know for sure is that WAR hasn't hit a million yet, or it would have been announced, but I also think it is much higher than just the 200-250k mentioned in some earlier posts.

No it doesn't.

Wrong conclusions from a foolish website. Read the statement they link. This is the same 800k accounts created we've been hearing since released. It also states the 1.2 million units sold to retailers which we already heard of in september. That financial statement's fiscal quarters ended *in* the free month of WAR. It's the still the same, only and last number we have heard from EA/Mythic ever since release. Also, 800k accounts created = 800k subs *until* the free month ends. At that point it's only true if you believe in a 100% retention rate... (lol)

Will that number have risen? Of course it will, accounts created can't go down, it only goes up.

And if for some reason you want to believe that that 800k is not the 800k accounts created they have been using all this time then how do you explain they would still use a clear "800k accounts created"  well into november  when they announced their "here we come Korea" announcement? PR Blunder? If they had something else to mention you can be sure they would have.

"Developed by Mythic Entertainment, WAR is a groundbreaking new MMORPG that launched in North America, Europe, Asia and Oceanic territories in September and has attracted more than 800,000 registered users since launch. The game will be launched in Korea in 2009."

My bad, "Registered Users" not "Accounts created". Practically same thing though.

heh you could get WTFPwned in Eve as a 5 year old player.

But to answer ur question, nahh its not hard to get going I say maybe three months and ur in a really kick ass ship and pvping with ur corp. Which is a decent amount of time.

Anyway I know this maybe against my normal "lets get people to play eve" attitude but in march eves next free Xpac comes out and along with in comes a totally revamped new player experience and new Epic story arc system. I wouil wait till march if u wanna start new the games going to have a ton of new players trying that out for you to kill.

I always hate it when people are asking "is it worth it?"  How in the world are we suppose to know what your style of MMO preference is--along with your financial means.  C'mon man, do some research and if it fits your style of gameplay then give it a try if you can afford the 35 dollars or so for the software and free 1 month.

Of course WAR has it's bugs, well it did when I quit playing a couple months ago.  But overall, it is a good game for what it is trying to accomplish.  It is a more PvP focused WoW, IMO.  It is a lot of fun if you have a good guild, but if you were to solo it then I think it would be very frusterating at times.

Like I said, we don't know what you look for in MMOs.  I look for player housing, skill-based, harsh death penality, most items craftable, and NOT gear-centric.  So WAR, while it was a good game for me that I enjoyed, did not have enough of my main qualities I look for which forced me to quit.

The line I highlighted is one of the primary reasons why I disagree and didn't care for the game. ORvR should not have been an add-on, and RVR scenarios made it a WOW clone, and not a successor to DAOC.

Add to the fact its really a game and not a world like DAOC was, and you begin to understand why the game didn't work out fo rme.

Doesn't mean the game is bad, if you prefer a heavy focus on getting in and out of combat quick and easy, with no real risk or reward, WAR is your game.

Like most of the other folks said, only you can decide for yourself whether you will like WAR or not.

The game did not grab me for the same reason Kyleran mentioned.I would suggest that if you want to try it go ahead. There's only two possibilities, you either love it or hate it.

Alright, Well im going to search for a trial. So if any one knows any one with one let me know. I figure one free month is good enough to decide. If you hate it, or love it.

RvR Sounds pretty cool, And it's still in early release. So ill just look at the core mechanics, and pass by the things that are small and fixable.

Thanx for the input the 5 pages of comments were a good read.
