I believe in a lot of odd things, but I dont think the future is that determined in any way.

But maybe the end of the world did not mean it's destruction, and its just some fundamental change? Though if so, only generations much later will be able to see that. ;)

The world is dying slowly, I dont think it will ever go poof but at the end of our generation there will be a lot of long standing problems that will come to fruition :P

so what exactly does the end of the world mean in this sense. is it just going to explode and thats it or is something else going to happen. in biblical terms, Jesus reigns on earth for 1000 years before the end of the world. Also, i dont think any of nostrodamus' predictions have come true. i could be wrong on that one. whos to say this clown didnt read that about the mayans and throw that in the mix as well.

I will bet all of you a million dollars each that it won't end.

I reckon a big natrual disaster will happen and then people will be like "it was true". However you can pick lots of years where some sorta natrual disaster happens like that 2004 tsunami.

to me the end of the world, would be the beggining of another world, myabe something like Utopia, if anyone knows what that is and understand the concept of Utopia they know what i mean. But it could also mean liek a rebirth of the world, remember Einstien's theory of curved space? if space is curved, and some astronomical occurance was to maybe straighten a part of space, that could cause time to restart, so to speak. As an aethiest i dont beleive in armageddon or such things, so to me its not the second coming. It could also mean that something could happen to change the world, not end it, maybe a meteor could fall from the sky and strike earth, not ending it just changing the entire planet, maybe plunging us into another ice age, it could mean many things, but i dont want to bore anybody.

I believe December 12th 2012 is the official date. But from my understanding the Mayans never predicted the end of the world, just that that was when their calender ended. Which could mean a great deal of different things including: maybe they just didn't plan it that far ahead.

If anything happens in 2012 I'd be shocked. End of the world theories have been around forever, throughout history we've seen that the end of the world has been predicted by many different people and nothing has ever happened... obviously (or not???).  

Although wouldn't it be fascinating if something actually did happen. Especially if that something is not the end of the world.

actually you are right, but see the mayan callendar ends in the quater of some word that means horrible or something liek that, i dont think it will personally, and notrodamos predicted it on December 21st 2012, but when ppl thought the world was gonna end in 1950 a grp of ppl went and lived on a mountain top, thinking when it ended they would be first to enter thier so called "heaven" since they were so high above sea level they lived on the mountain for 6 months, they must have been out of their minds, imo

Maybe not the end of the world, but the planet could use a good wiping out of 2/3 of  the population of humanity type event though.

The 2012 Mayan bit is a significant calendar event, but not a prediction of the end of the world.  It's basically their equivalent of January 1, 2000 for us (or 1000 or 10000 or whatever).  They did have occasional references to dates after 2012, but they weren't very common because they were so far off in the future.  Most dates that we would cite are before 3000 AD, for the same reason.

As for Nostradamus, his predictions are so vague that no matter what happens, his boosters can claim that he predicted it.  Predictions don't really count unless they're precise enough to be things that one would consider unlikely.

Exactly, he said a lot of things and people like to bend what he says to "perfectly fit" an event that happened.

On another note, the Mayan calender ended on the day it did because that is when (going off memory here, might be off a bit) the Earth, Sun, Jupiter and the center of the Milky Way are all in line, which they believed would form a bridge for them to reach heaven(or something like that). They never predicted the end of the world.  And people have been predicting the end of the world ever since they became self aware and knew their was a world to end. Take it with a grain of salt, but stock up on can goods just incase stupid people run wild.
