A. It's comforting seeing people chat in the chat system, for me atleast.

B. I like to go solo until around max level, then join a guild. I may want help until that level. I like looking in the chat sometimes and asking people in the chat system. Without a guild and without seeing people chat in the chat system how is this possible?

I will feel alone. Just like I did in Warhammer. You have to realize guys, chat system play big roles in ANY GAME. Even small games like Neocron need a chat system. It's what the web is about, it's a social network. Every game needs a social network.

Major turn off for me. Enjoying Age Of Conan at moment (started this week), looks like I'll be staying here instead of moving over to Darkfall in January. Sounds like Darkfall is going to be another promise too much game that doesn't provide and has a terrible chat system.

If a chat system is what turns you off to Darkfall then I would assume that you really weren't going to play it anyways.     Oh well, i've moved on now from that horrible information.

So you say you want to find someone to help gain skills?  go to the local bank, town, or even the dungeon you want to fight in and talk to people.  Its that easy!!  And no, the chat system doesn't play a big role in ANY GAME.  Most people believe that bit of info because the recent games that have been released the past few years have contained this so called "chat system".

lol? big lol?

Remember Asheron's Call?

Remember Neocron? (if you ever played it)

Face Of Mankind?

LOTRO?

Lineage2 (Currently playing)

I can keep going....

lol most if not all mmorpgs have some sort of chat system, most having a general chat at the miminum. Not having a trade chat, general chat, or global chat will really turn alot of people off. I'm still probably going to try the game out and see how it is and how the gameplay is with the chat system they put out. I've been watching Darkfall like I watched wow for 2 years. Except, I don't go crazy over games anymore. Some people go overboard and then come release feel like they were cheated. I keep my expectations low at the moment. Except, Aion is a game I'm really looking forward to.

All I know is, after getting Warhammer and feeling alone in Warahmmer and having to deal with memory leakage, I quit and said it didn't even feel like it should have been out of beta. Darkfall better be way different and better produce. I'm looking forward to the graphics and shit but they better not disappoint.

Your playing Lineage2, wich has the pretty much EXACT same chat system DF is gonna use, and your actually saying DF will suck but not Lineage2? Or where you saying Lineage2 chat system sucked to?

I dont follow here.

There is NO GLOBAL in Lineage2 except for the Hero chat, and thats for a choosen few, and its pretty much always was spammed with kiddy smacktalk and WTB/WTT spam.

The way i read it your contradicting yourself here....

Oh.. and don't forget AC didn't always have a general chat. (or else there would be no point to go to places like Arwic to trade (then Sub.. Then MP))

And the MrWolf.

You don't get it.. do you?  World Chat is F'n stupid in a game that's designed around PvP.  I'll paypal you a quarter so you can buy a clue..

This thread is absolute mind boggling.   The hardcores don't want because global chat because they would get into more confrontations.

I think most people prefer some sort of global chat.  I would say the pros of global out way the cons by far.  It would probably do good for DF to at least make local chat large enough so that it covers a quarter of the world.

I think alot of us are still unsure exactly what kind of chat channels we will have available.... If the only options are Group, Guild, and say that will be bad...The reason why I say that is that alot of us like to have a chat channel that reaches alot of people......Its not so much that I like to talk in it but that I like to listen and learn......Too many people here are associating global chat with barrens chat.....Thats just one game.....I have only played 2-3 games where the ganeral chat was terrible...I have played several others though where the general chat was mature and very helpful for learning things in the game...... If I'm a new player in Darkfall and its my first day how the heck am I supposed to learn anything if my only chat options are Group, guild and say??  I wont have a group at that low a level, highly unlikely a guild will take on someone on their first day, and say is only gonna reach other noobs.....In this setup alot of people will get frustrated and leave......I think alot of you are underestimating the value of a solid chat system.

I think the global chat in AoC made more ppl leave then it help to stay.

I think not having a global from start in WAR was a mistake, and rightfully they added it fast.

I think Blizzards refusal to alow crossfaction communication in the global chats incl say/yell was for a very good reason. To get rid of all trashtalk that would only put people off.

There are no hardcore ppl here, there are people who have played other games wich utilized different types of chat systems for there games, and that thinks that those kind of chat systems would be best systems in a game like DF.

Reasons stated above is why i think a to big general chat (anything bigger then the size of a major city) will hurt the playerbase more then save it, the bigger the area the worse it will get. I think any global chat that both friends and enemies can access will be flooded.

If global chats where introduced in a game like DF, i would hope there would be more then one, wich hopefullymeant some channels would be occupied by the more PvP hungry crowd, and you could always move to another of the globals. Best choice would be players being able to create there own global chats.

I really hope DF does not go the route of WoW/AoC type of global chats. EvE type of global chats i could work with, most of them being player run and all. But even if they do its still nothing i would not play DF for. Im just hoping aventurine chooses a system that will prevent ppl from using one global for all chatting, becouse that will become like AoC and turn of more people then it will help.

To go one step further i also enjoyed very much the socialization and community that was created with Lineage2 chat system, and how much i hated the community that was created with AoC chat system. Wich goes to proove that sometimes less is way more. And i would really like to see this in DF, and if im lucky aventurine feels the same .

Hardcore was meant for the posts that were " I don' t want 10 people coming after me after I kill someone " and " I don' t want people knowing where our clan is ".   Those just seem completely opposite of what Hardcore PvPers would want.

I don' t know how AoC implemented their global chat, but I was under the impression that most global chat systems have restrictions in place.  It isn' t possible to spam for more than a minute without severly hindering the survivability of your character.  This basically leads global chat to:

- Trading

- LFGs

- Little bit of trash talking

I can definitely see unrestricted global chat being terrible, but I think all games can benefit from a global chat penalizes a user's character if it is abused.

Like people used to learn there games before the WoW era, trial and error. Explore your options yourself, learn by trying. And afterwards if theres still things you dont understand or if you need tips, head towards the player hubs and use /yell chat. Or ask the friends youve made, guild youve joined. Heck if its sometimes gamebreaking go to the forum communities.

In games like this, it is VERY LIKELY guilds will be trying to recruit new players, and do there best to make them one in there army by helping them out and making sure they like to stay with them when shit hits the fan and enemies are at the gates. In games like WoW, new players are laughed  very often, told to level up before joining guilds. In games like Lineage2 and EvE - new players are overhauled by guilds trying to expand there size and might, looking for "fresh meat" hehe. Its a very different world open PvP...

I totaly understand your view on lowbies not being wanted in guilds as ive seen it in many EQ/WoW games, so not blaming you for having that view at all.

You dont have to know the whole game inside and out before you start playing. Explore the world yourself, learn from your mistakes - study your enemies. Share your knowledge with your friends. Adventure. Train. Find out good strategys. Master your professions. Share your spoils of knowledge with the ones you trust. Become great by yourself and your friends. Respect your enemie and try to outwhit em at every corner.

Some of the games i played recently i could pretty much tell what i would be doing for the next 2 months before the game was even released.

Its a game, a world, an adventure. Live it, explore it, enjoy it! Find your own way in this world! (omg some company should hire me to do there adds i think )

Global chat is not the end all be all information portal for Q&A or learning how to play. Now it sure has it uses thats for sure but i think some ppl are taking it to the extreem.

Global chat usualy means /yell and /area or /regional and no /trade   though  regular local chat from what i read will not be effected.

I follow you on the hardcore part

You are severly underestimating the "little bit of trashtalk". Imagine 2 big alliances having a fight 100 vs 100. One side looses and one of those hundreds say in the global chat between the LFGs and Trading:

"Lol you pussies you just bot and ebay your gold dont be proud of your WIN, go 1010101010 som more (that means "bot some more")"

The chat would be spammed like there was no tomorrow. Now trow in all the angry people who got there loot stolen by being over run by 15 man gang vs ther 3 man party out Grinding and the 15 man gan saying in global "Haha suckers, you fail".

The angry kids trying to be cool and cutting in to answer some good questions like:

New player: "Hey i cant seem to find the climb button, what am i missing"

angrykid112: "RTFM noob"

whitehatjohn: "LFG to alliagator aliand elite quests!"

random player: "Im sick of this stupid chat, if you got nothing helpful to say stfu angrykid112!"

angrykid234: "Go back to wow lolololol"

angrykid112: "true dat lolol"

decent player sick of global: "We have answered this 3 times the last minue already, sigh :( - press U, make sure you trained the skill to climb etc."

Now trow all that into a mix, and youll have AoC global chat at its finest. Its a competetive game, ppl are gonna gloat over there prey and generally assholes to people they dont know and enemies (while in guild chat they might be really cool people).

I really hope DF doesnt go the AoC rute and just copies the WoW chat system for the open PvP game. Its gonna sting alot of ppl in the eyes. And really hurt the DF community alot. Nothing wrong with smacktalking, but dont do it in general channels - stick to guildforums and PMs. But aslong as an easy to access channel many ppl reads exists, the gloaters are gonna love to gloat in there, waving there e-peens.

In my book global chat is a global chat, a wide area at minimum to server wide. /wholearea /region /world /continent kind of stuff.

/yell /say /whisper /trade (/trade being pretty much city wide/tradehub wide/AH wide, usually the same as /yell)

/yell is way to small to be considered a global chat imho.

Hey bro, please quote where I said Darkfall will suck. I didn't. I've been looking forward to this game for over a year. I just think they are promising too much, hopefully they deliver. I'm not contradicting myself, Lineage 2 has trade chat and general chat. Plus, I'm playing Age Of conan more than anything at the moment, only playing Lineage 2 for pvp on the weekends nowadays. I prefer General chat, Trade chat, Group chat, and of course Guild Chat. All other chats we don't need. I feel we should have chats with the option to turn them off if need be. That way the people who don't mind the chats can just uncheck them. Not having them is kind of dumb if you ask me. No use in not having them. Sure, more to moderate. But come on, lol. That's what GM's are for.

Put some words in your mouth there. Sorry. I mean to say " actually saying DFs chatsystem will suck but not Lineage2s chatsystem?"

But please tell me what chat you consider a global chat in Lineage2 except the Hero chat.

The /yell (!text) and /trade (+text) are far from the global chats thats seen in games like AoC. Sure the yell chat is quite big but its no like your shouting the whole Giran area, more like just the Giran town standing in the center of giran (it does reach out abit outside the walls thou).

A chat like that is perfectly fine, and small enough to prevent it being filled of smack all day. Like the hero chat hehe. If that the kind of chats you like then thats what it seems aventurine is going for.

When i say Global im talking Hero chat large open for everyone. Continental big, server big. Region big.

Yell chat is perfect, lets you talk to many ppl in the same area, and prevents whiney smacktalk that happened two valleys away to reach you, combines with the smacktalk that is in your area and all the other areas in the region/continent/server.

Thats my style for a open sandbox-world  pvp-game anyway

I agree that World chat etc. is boring. People use childish Ego trip most of time. To play game and be just like in real world where you dont have WC is ok. Good game..

The absence of those chats makes this alot more realistic if you ask me and I love it. Plus I hate games like WOW where everywhere you go you have spam rattling off non-stop about chuck norris. When your out in the wilderness alone... you SHOULD be alone

Do you know how bored and lonely I would get if all I could do is talk to a passerby who may just end up killing me anyway?

Its a dumb idea, not for realism purposes, but seriously... that means no Newbie Help channel, no trade channel, no LFG channel.

Its a game dude, not a simulation.

Yes... and its just as much a game with or without carebear chat channels.

Global chat to me has always made the world feel so much smaller. My fav mmos... UO, dransik.. etc didnt have this global chats. I hate feeling connected to everyone no matter where I go.

It's not a dumb idea.. it's just a different idea. Alot of people love the idea alot of people dont. Again this game was made to be colder and harder. IF your looking fror 100 chat channels to make your game easier you have many mmo's already providing this so you should be a happy guy

So now chat channels are carebear?

LMAO.

Unbelievable.

Well, all I'll say is, to those saying "go back to WoW" or whatever... careful what you wish for, and don't underestimate the importance of a functional chat system. To many people, the ability to "hang out" and chat with others is the key thing keeping them playing a MMO, else they'd just play a single player game. And no, it's not only PvE'ers who feel this way. Many avid PvP'ers share that sentiment.

A lack of a chat system - either due to bugs or by design - has been a major turn-off to many gamers in other MMOs. A lacking chat system has driven many a player away from other MMOs because to them it made the world feel "lifeless".

It's not important to some of you, perhaps... but you can simply disable the channels, or ignore them. For someone who enjoys that whole "social element" to a MMO, it's going to be a major turn-off. And despite how "uber" you might think the game is, without a healthy player population, it becomes a *real* boring place to be after a while.

So... if you really want to turn players away, well.. just keep ragging on them for wanting the ability to talk to other players in an online multiplayer environment.

I swear, sometimes I can't help but see this game going the way of Shadowbane with the attitude of some of its followers. So many parallels. The self-declared "hardcore" will chase everyone else off with their virtual posturing, condescending "carebear" remarks and chest pounding... then wonder why there aren't more people playing it.

The one thing I like global chat for is avioiding the issues I had with FFXI which was never being able to find a group because people were in other areas. I do like the fact that people will have to congreate, interact, and trade in towns hubs ect, but if most people aren't inside these areas and are instead off griding out skills, carfting what have you then being able to find interact with people is going to be near impossible, unless the built in IRC interface works really well. And yes, the global chat will be full of people stroking their epeen, but it will also be full of intresting convo topics and brige the gap between the new player and veteran easier.

Well I'd say i go both ways on this one.

I mean logically it makes sense to not be allowed to talk to someone on the other side of the continent thru means of chat channels and such. However, if there is no local chat where you can just talk and have the people close to you hear you, then I don't like that at all.

But I am still really pumped for this game nonetheless lol

Well, they have described the gameplay pretty good.

You'd be in an area, walking or creeping through someplace carefully. Then you hear sounds of a fight through trees. You stop, look around and creep up slowly. As you come up you see two guys going at it... one guy's health is wayyyyy down- about 3/4s. The other guy is only down 1/4.

Now at this point you have a choice. You can either:

1. Help the guy low on health.
2. Help the guy high on health.
3. Wait and see who wins and then kill the winner.
4. Leave after watching the fight.

If someone had a local chat, and was sending "Hey, there's a guy PKing people by the big rock in the river at coords X34.3 Y34.5" over it, that kinda of messes up the feeling you'd get when stumbling on the battle. You'd automatically know WHO the PKer was and who the innocent was. No fun in that. More fun to figure it out as you come out of the woods with your sword in your hand, waiting to hear what the winner had to say for himself. Again, the world is billed as a Survival of the Fittest.

Again, I usually like local chats, but in a scenario like something above, it would totally ruin the surprise of this chance encounter.

So why have guild chat or PMs to ask for help, how is it any different to asking in general? Is it magically more realistic to ask for a guildy to help even though he is on  another continent? I like how you people keep bringing "realisim" as a reason for this while forgetting that this is a game.

We all saw how bad it was in WAR without a local chat. If they dont add one to DF, this game dies for me. I wont buy it, i wont test it, if there isnt any local chat, because:

 - Hard to form groups without local chat, i just try to think about a Vanguard without local chat..... NO WAY

- Hard to form any large scale battles, because no one will know, that around 1km away is a large battle

- Hard to sell goods, when you cant "reach" your customers

- Hard to find new members for guilds

Everything is hard without a good communication. Ok, my favourite mmorpg which i played most (Ragnarok Online) also didnt got any global / local chat.

But i guess today you cant develop a mmorpg without a local chat.

I can only tell you my view, i was looking forward to an old school mmorpg, without instances, good crafting, freedom etc.

But without local chat i wont play it. DF was my only hope for the next year together with AION, well... now its only AION.

And to all ppl who say: "Go back to WOW". Just stfu. Even EQ1, and DAoC got local chats. Even the most cash shop mmorpgs got one.

We all shouldnt forget that we talk about DF, a game with a HUGE world, a huge world without local chat is a joke. As i said, when i remember playing Vanguard.... i cant see myself even trying to play a game with a huge world without a global chat.
