So,

I am not a terribly avid poster here on the forums, but i check it every day, mostly all day. And I would say, after discovering my first MMO, FFXI. I was in love. the huge worlds, all the new content, a world where I love learn to love or hate my characters. So many hours of my life given to them

But I think I think its time to say goodbye for awhile. My resolution this year. No games for all of 2009. I have always wondered what I would do with those hundreds of hours I spent adventuring around some god forsaken land and now I am going to find out.

I probably wont check this again, as I dont want to tempt myself. But I wondered if anyone had any similar plans or ever felt that way.

Regardless, happy new years everyone.

cheers!

If I had known how shitty 2008 was going to be, I would have done the same thing last year.

Well thank you for this very great information. Is there anything else you would like to share with us about your life. How was your morning dump? or maybe What did you eat for breakfast?

That's crazy, how is there anything else to do but play video games? Are you including consoles too? and you said games...so does that also include Board games? or games such as drinking games?

Really not playing any games for a WHOLE YEAR would be the most dull life ever!

Also remember not to mention your new years resolution before new years!

Seriously though I think its a good move.  I have a couple of mates who have lost the last 3 years of their life and even when I try and catch up on the phone they fking tell me to get on vent so they can keep playing.  WTF are people thinking when they cant spend 20 minutes chatting to their mates?  I have a managerial position, pregnant wife and a bunch of hobbies so MMO's are essential for my sanity.  Best way to zone out.

Just a thought, maybe you should have a second resolution and that is to book some courses?  I took up drums and piano a while back and got hooked, can pour a ton of hours into an instrument or whatever.  Either that or get yourself a nymphomaniac.

Where does one find said species?

To the OP, you'll be back. Perhaps you'll end up like me and just start cutting the hours you spend playing these games wayyy back, but you will come back for a taste at some point in 2009 ;)

I was disappointed this year as well. AoC :( really could have been so much better. As it was i spent a lot of time on it, and maxed out my characters fairly quickly. Everyone packed up and left though, so that was that. It was a terrible community anyway. People have spoken about it before, but I dont think ive seen as much venom in 6 or 7 years of playing these games.

Anywayz thats off topic. Good luck with whatever you do in 2009, and happy new year!

In a similar position to yourself in a way although i've already done what your planning to do. For last 3 years I've spent literally thousands of hours playing MMOs, however at the begining of July I just simply stopped. I was planing on playing WAR and mabye even re-installing wow and checking out the new expansion but after playing AoC from release for 6 weeks I think I lost faith in playing MMOs from release.

Over the last couple months I've found that even if you do a lot of stuff outside the game world for example I started going to the gym 3-4 times a week for a couple hours, also turned 18 so was going out drinking/clubbing, doing things with my friends a lot more I still find that theres a lot of hours spent in my flat waiting for something to happen which I will either spend mindlessly watching crap on TV, having some inane chat with my flatmates or just sitting in silence trying to think of what I could do for the next hour or so.

As a couple other people were saying you might find that your going to be pretty bored with no games for a year unless you have a lot of stuff planned that you want to do with your life.

Hmmm...I did the no games thing for the first 25 years of my life....I think it went along pretty good.My father...he has never played a video game. And get this...my grandfather never even saw a TV!! There is a world outside of gaming.  Kids have just become too reliant on mindless entertainment supplied for them.

Right?

We had this idea for a pencil & paper campaign that we are starting this weekend that we could have started a year ago. Ahh well, can't get that year back. Only game I'm looking forward to this year is Mortal Online which will hopefully come Q3/Q4 so I got a while. I may try the Star Trek one but only because I know it never was going to be an attempt at a traditional MMO. It'll most likely be that I play the 30 days and cancel. Just curious about how they do it, mostly. I'm following Earthrise and FE a little, mostly to keep informed. Meh. kinda feels like the nails are being put in the coffin of my MMO days, lol.

Asheron's Call. The one open world, classless progression, live team content oriented game that ALL game sites and developers show little respect for as a template to pattern future MMOs after.

I actually had a thought today about smoking actually. And I agree if someone gave up smoking for a whole year I would be a hell of a lot more impressed with them, then I would be myself. But, I was talking to an ex girlfriend of mine, who told me she checked her logged hours playing FFXI, which in one year, she logged 160 days of accumulated hours playing in one year. Now I have read that one cigarette takes away 11 minutes of your life, And I have gladly given days to playing the "flavor of the month" game.

And I think its actually the intention to fill the time, with things that actually matter, (thats just my opinion) And living in NY, maybe I will actually commit to that Cat rescue that I adopted from.

Happy New Year everyone.

Cheers
