It was probably Star or Bria...  You can combine all the servers into 1 single unit and if the mechanics of the game stink, the experience for the most part will stink as well.

sorry folks, my post was a lil brief

first problem.  as i was doing the legacy quest(that quest that spands 10+ Levels)  I was going out killin stuff and such for one of the huts, i was a contracted murderer, a gopher, a rent collector etc etc etc.  I was tryin to be a jedi(now tell me how RP is it for a good jedi to go around and make an example of some runaway droids by first hurting them and then killing them)

second problem grindfest(don't mind grinding, but hate it when every quest is basically cookie cutter.  Goto place x and kill x number of x, or goto place y and kil y to gather y number of y,  That right there is like 75% of the game

i heard that SWG was good in it's glory days though

To the OP, in the Pre-cu time period you did not have "quests", you would take a terminal mission and kill lairs of kreedles, womp rats and such over and over, no story line just mindless killing to level up.

For roleplaying you do that with other players not quests, if you were on Starsider galaxie thats a big part of what goes on on that galaxie.

at least you gave it a shot, right?

Unfortunately, SWG has always been a grind fest, even in the glory days of pre-cu. Back in those days, you just did it b/c you had to. Today, you still do it but its part of a quest that someone is telling you to do. The content for low level is still lacking - there's an entire new side to SWG once you hit 90.

Oh, and depending on the server, swg will not be RP friendly...

I'm confused.

Where did the OP say he played pre-CU? What does pre-CU have anything to do with his post?

I think both of those servers are RP servers essentially.

You still had to kill stuff, though.

So I started to walk into the water. I won't lie to you boys...I was terrified. But I pressed on, and as I made my way past the breakers, a strange calm came over me. I don't know if it was divine intervention or the kinship of all living things, but I tell you, Jerry, at that moment ... I was a marine biologist.

There were 4 theme parks and NPC quests. The game was not strictly grinding.

There is a lot of miscommunication about Pre-CU SWG.  First of all, though i tend to agree that it was one of the best MMO's ever designed, it did have a SERIOUS major flaw in the design - namely... there was nothing to do.  But, that's not exactly the "whole" story.

Pretty much the only in-game content was what you were experiencing - Got x, kill y, collect z = reward money + XP.  Either that, or just find some place where mobs randomly spawn and just kill everything you encounter, over and over again as it respawns.  This was also the favored manner for loot.

At any rate, the only "quests" there were in the game were given to you in the form of Themeparks, and these were usually the only activities in game where the final reward was some sort of weapon/armor or schematic.  Sadly, the substance of these themeparks had you performing the same tasks that you normally do.  The cool part was who you were doing the quests for, and where you were doing them.  But... again... it wasn't THAT big of a deal, since the novelty of working for Han Solo was overshadowed by the fact that the in-game avatar looked just like another randomly generated PC.  I mean... he didn't even wear Han Solo's normal attire... but anyway...

What made SWG so unique was the ability to pretty much have whatever kind of template you wanted.  There were no limitations, so long as you had the Skill Points.  For me, and for many others... this was what drove the fascination behind the game.  I don't think you'll run into too many "vets" who will argue that the game was overall lacking in things to do.  I mean, there was stuff to do, sure, but it was usually broken.

It's truely a testament to just how amazing the Character System was, that the interest of the game lie solely on that aspect.  Just about everything else in the game was absolutely trashed and broken.

Player Cities were nothing but places for people to store crap, even though many people liked to decorate them (which was extremely hard to do because there weren't proper UI tools).

Player Bases were broken half the time, and the other half weren't even in the game (not that it mattered because they really meant nothing for the overall gameplay).

Half of the Professions were pointless and broken.  And those that worked, weren't working as intended.

There were countless bugs and inconsistencies.

Yet, in spite of all of that - people loved the game.  Why?  Because when you played the game... when you actually figured out what was going on and what the purpose was - you could see it.  The whole foundation for that ideal was there.  It was right there in front of us.  And so many people held on to that hope because they KNEW that if there was ever a moment the devs could just bring it all together and make it work.... then the game would be a true inspiration.  And then came the NGE.

It was like... it was a slap in the face.  For two years, the devs really did nothing for the game, at all.  They tweaked classes here and there, usually making the problems worse... but that's about it.  When you really look back at "all the progress SWG has made"... really all of that progress was made under the hood of the NGE.  None of that progress was made in the original system, because they were too busy capitalizing on the Movies - making expansions based on content that had nothing to do with the setting of the game.

Gutboy is right, there wasn't a lot of directed quests or story arcs in the pre-cu era. But to me, the beauty of that time was I didn't really need a lot of dev-created content to enjoy the game at that time.

I had four toons I used to set up a resources business on Shadowfire. My BH used his scout skills to harvest organics. I took custom orders and had bulk items offered on a vendor. I also enjoyed being an MCH with him, taming new pets and raising them.

My smuggler sliced weapons and armor for various smiths or people just passing by looking for a cheap slice. He also sold spice.

My TKM/Swords was my adventure toon. I used him to explore the more dangerous areas of the galaxy, and he was my favorite pilot. I'd use him on salvage runs to stock up on ship loot so I could use my SW to RE quality parts for other pilots. I took orders for missiles, torpedoes and flares, and occassionally I built custom ship parts for friends.

And the SW was also more than just a ship builder. I used him to mine resources across the galaxy. I spent tons of time surveying on all the planets, setting up my harvesters and logging in my other characters to place harvesters in the best spots, too. When I wasn't off adventuring in space or on dangerous planets, I was checking my harvesters, comparing  my prices to those of the competitors and slashing if necessary, haggling on prices with customers, crafting new items, trying to stir up new business in the cantina or interacting with tons of people by just shooting the breeze.

So, Pre-cu was more than just doing terminal missions and mindless killing to level up -- I made my own content by running a virtual business and interacting with so many other players. And sure, a number of those things can still be done in the current version of the game (well, except for the slicing and the spice crafting). But for me, it's just not the same without the same bustling community as before. A number of the systems that were set up to promote socialization and dependecy were done away with the NGE. Then the community took a major hit with the NGE, and so did my ability to make my own content and enjoy the game as I had in the past.

As much as I dislike swg these days, I don't think theres too many mmo's out there that let you RP very much through the leveling quests.  If you were an entertainer or crafter it might be different but combat professions in swg have always been a total grindfest.  At least now you have some actual quests to do, which can take away some of the feelings that you're just grinding.  Back when I played, all we had were mission terminals that spawned a lair of mobs for you to slaughter endlessly.  I'd never do that again.  Ever.

OH MY GOD WE'RE SURROUNDED! SEND FOR BACKUP! DIG IN DEFENSIVE POSITIONS! MAN YOUR NECKBEARDS!!!
