whether its intentional or not, its genius. I haven't seen any type of ad for darkfall anywhere, but with so much hype and controversy everyone and there brother has heard about it through word of mouth. |

If you could find a more cynical bunch of people than most gamers it would be amazing. Combine this with the cornucopius amounts of advertising you have to put up with on the web, advertising has little effect on gamers other than recognition. The fact is they are selling a game, if it sucks it will bomb more than most. If its good then I'm sure the ignorant masses will be on the boards everywhere preaching about how revolutionary and effective the ad campaign was. ----- |

I agree. Any game in development this long will generate this much attention. The problem is MOST companies will go out of business if they stay in development this long. The DF devs have just been fortunate enough to get funding to hang in there this long. I'ts not a strategy, just a matter of getting funding. Most investors won't wait this long to get a return on investment. I've heard they got some funding from the Greek government. I don't know if this is true, but if it is that would explain their ability to stay in development for so long without their investors pulling the plug on them. Or to put it another way, imagine if you worked at a company and someone said this: Hey guys. I have a great plan for publicity! Let's stay in development so long that people begin to argue about whether or not our game is vaporware. This way we can save money on advertising! What do you think? Guys? Seriously OP, what do you think "their way" is? You really think they could have made the game a lot faster, but just tried to do it slowly for free publicity? I don't think that's plausible. |

What hype? You mean on gaming forums focusing on MMO games? Because outside of these type of sites I have not seen much talk about Darkfall at all. Here's a little experiment. Walk up to 50 people on the street and ask them if they have heard of a game called World of Warcraft. Take note of how many people have heard of it. Now do the same thing with Darkfall. Unless there is a fluke, I guarantee that no one will have heard of it, but at least some will have heard of WoW. I have about 20 gamer friends that have played MMO games from UO to WAR but they just play, they don't go to the forums like I do. When I mentioned on vent one night that the Darkfall release date had finally been announced I got a lot of, "What's that?" responses. "There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer." |

Hype is a very sharp double bladed sword. If the game delivers, well the sword will cut through all the competion. However if it fails to live up to the hype, it will cut the owners throat. Its best to avoid hype as I have not seen one game as of recently to come close to living up to the hype. wheather or not Adventurine is trying to hype their game or not, that fact is that the silence is hyping the game. Waiting for: FFXIV V2.0, ArcheAge,GW II |

The game so far is hyped by the amount of negativity towards it ;)

Hype means nothing when you can't back it up and you can be pretty much guranteed that this game will NEVER backup the hype that it has gotten which at the end of the day will be the cause for it's quick downfall. |

Marketing is a form of social engineering. It is about convincing people that your product is something that they want. |

I realized exactly what I was saying, thank you very much. I don't see how it's putting my foot in my mouth when people who play MMO games have never heard of one that has been in development since 2001. In contrast we talk about Aion and The Old Republic on a daily basis. Darkfall hasn't been brought up since I mentioned the release date. Anyway. My point was, I think people who frequent gaming forums (myself included) tend to believe the games we are following are more popular than they actually are. I did the same thing before FFXI was released in the US. "There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer." |

There is no such thing as bad publicity. I have no doubt that, at least at some level, this was a planned marketing strategy. This is a smart ploy on AventurinE's part. They keep silent...release just enough to tease the public...announce a few false release dates...do next to no advertising (thus saving themselves enormous capital), and everyone goes insane. The fanbois rave one way...the haters rave the other way...doesn't matter if it's bad or good...just as long as people keep talking about it. As I've stated before I have friends that are going to try DF just BECAUSE of all the forum talk. It's a win/win situation for Aventurine...UNLESS THEY DON'T DELIVER. If the product comes out and fails to live up to the things that THEY have said that their will be in game, then AventurinE will find it hard to get ANYONE to give a second project a chance. We will be like, fool me once shame on you...fool me twice...shame on me. It's a bit like guys who go to a strip club and spend money on the strippers thinking that they are going home with them. The strippers may tell you they're going home with you...but believe me...they aren't...lol. Krystar Daymen (Old School UO player baby) |

OH I get it now...instead of having faith that this game will offer something new as opposed to the TON OF CRAP MMO'S on the market today, I should be like you and just believe MY own hype... Thanks for clearing that up for me Krystar Daymen (Old School UO player baby) |

Its not as funny though because that person was talking about how people are dumb, but they made a subject verb agreement which is a gramattical error while the error I made is one that most forum users do, forum shorthand if you will. thanx tho Thanks though* |
