I think he meant all MMO's but FFXI by SE were failures. Anyway, I know those weren't big projects. This new one has been in the works for years with no new info, I think it's going to be a huge title. I'm looking forward to it. I just wonder how I'm going to play both...

They already had several titles and all beside FFXI is basically a failure.

Beside, we going to see some story by the creator of Chrono trigger soon (the 3 new story coming up) in FFXI i think (they talked about it in an interview)

LOL FFXI a failure? Is that why it's still one of the most subscribed to games after all these years, beating out the even most newest MMOs?

Well at least I wasn't the only one who mis-read that :-p

I think the bit I missed was "all beside FFXI"..

Though I know they originally were working on Fantasy Earth, which was subsequently sold to another company to finish up, there are no other MMOs they have out, that I'm aware of.. so it is a sort of odd thing to say, FFXI being SE's only actual MMO right now.

I'm still eagerly awaiting official word on the new MMO... Which, as noted in the post above, apparently may very well make its debut at E3 '09, in June.

In that article, however, the author also suggests that SE should add microtransactions (item shops) to it.

Let's just hope SE's smart enough not to listen.

Ya I saw that microtransaction suggestion too. All I can say if SE confirms microtransactions, then I will confirm that I wont be playing it, and I have been waiting for this MMO since 2005. I am resonably sure that there wont be microtransactions, so I am not too worried.

i can almost garuntee they wont do that with a major MMO. and half that articals suggestions suck. the streaming play probly would just make the game less playable on more PCs and connections, the micro trans are for free games and for people who obviously dont work for rewards and the no 24-3 day spawns.....WHAT? the whole point is that they are BIG HUNTS WITH BIG REWARDS. its not the only game to do this and FFXI does it great, its a big deal when you get claim and get that uber drop you have been waiting on, its kind of th whole point. if you cant be compitent enough to wait til the window time (or figure out that its not  1-24 spawn) then dont do it, its built for the hardcore endgame crowd, hopefully they dont listen to these tards and make it WoW 2.0 final fantasy edition.

Bingo.

The thing people need to accept - even if they don't like it - is that there *are* people out there who actually don't mind things like that. We're okay with certain items being really difficult to get, where everyone and their pet hamster doesn't have it.

After all, if us so-called "old-school" gamers can learn to accept that more "accessible" MMOs don't appeal to our playstyle... Those who prefer the more "accessible" games can learn to accept that MMOs like FFXI don't appeal to theirs. There's room enough for both, and neither side needs to have a monopoly.

There's a sense of entitlement from many in the MMO genre these days, who feel because they want "x item", they should have it. That there should be no item in the game that they can't get without having to exert any extra effort to do so, and that it's unfair if they have to.

Good news is.. there are games for these people already on the market and more, it seems, coming all the time.

I'm not a fan of those games... so I don't play them... at least not seriously, or for very long.

FFXI is one of the few remaining MMOs that acknowledges there are people who are willing and, in fact, prefer to "go that extra mile" to get an item that not just anyone can get, be it by defeating an extraordinarily difficult creature, or having the timing and luck of getting a rare spawn when it appears. And they acknowledge that not everything in the game should be so easily attainable.

For the most part, SE have stuck to their guns with FFXI by not homogenizing it and lowering the  bar so "anyone can get anything", and it's won them a very loyal player base of ~500k players - a very healthy population for a MMO, especially one 6+ years into its lifespan.

Let's hope they do the same with the new MMO.

I agree with everything you said, except there is a big problem with this sort of game.It is called CHEATS !.

You think people were actually waiting for the spawns?most were botting or using timers built into there POS programs.People were opening up the files because Square used a stupid system in there NM spawns,People would look and find out the placeholders, there was nothing being done honestly and from hard work. Some of the cheats would change the files so that the NM they would give it a new mesh, something VERY large and a long name like WWWWWWWWWW,so it made the NM easy to spot from anywhere on the map.Making a spawn on a timer seemed to be superficial,as i witnessed on MANY occasions 75's warping into the EXACT time of the NM spawn, that is not hard work or dedication.

SMN'rs using scripts to raise there skills by casting non stop outside the city gates was common to see.SPEED/FLEE cheats,POS cheats to hack the mining nodes from one location,POS cheat to move anywhere on a map, therefore bypassing obstacles tha twere not meant to be bypassed.Heck super easy to win avatar fights using the cheats,oh did i mention invisible also?yep a whole ton of cheating was going on in FFXI,that is what happens when things are made too complicated.

Making these spawns have limited areas to spawn also made it a joke and easy prey for a claim bot,if they wanted it to be truly challenging ,then make the spawn RANDOM anywhere in the zone.I mean it is so bad several NM have ONLY one spawn point pffft.

I say get rid of the timers and make ALL the NM's RANDOM anywhere on  a map and have like a % to spawn, that way it could spawn anywhere from one minute to one month, you never know. This way the players that pop in and out from one NM to another ,take a big risk leaving the one they find most important, because you would never know when it pops. The other change would be to change how the game spawns it's mobs. The claim bots access the spawn as soon as the engine calls for the numbers corresponding to the NM,example kk00,they need to change that, whole approach to spawning NM's,that way the cheat script can't sit there waiting for the number to pop, giving the non cheats no chance at all.Pretty hard to out claim a script that is claiming the mob before it visually spawns lol...impossible.Some used an alarm,so you may have a chance to out claim them, but still mariginal at best.

Square made a mistake in the way they labelled there mobs, they have a 4 sequence of letters and numbers like kk00,that is what the cheat programs look for everytime Square updates it.They should have made those numbers Random again, forever changing,so that the cheat scripts can't pick them up.Even so ,sticking to the way they implemented it,at least allowing random spawns anywhere on the map, would keep the cheats honest and give everyone a FAIR chance.

It was so bad ,i did tons of research on the whole cheating thing and could pretty much spot cheating as soon as i saw it.

I didn't even get into the bot scripts that ran a WHM for you.You could have a botted WHM second account, that could heal you for the real tough NM that were possibly too much for you to solo.

Then we have the COVETED LU SHANG fishing rod,do i even need to go there?i'll save anymore typing as i am getting tired. It is endless i could go on and on,and i am not making any of this up,it is ALL FACT.I am sure the posters will agree to everything i have mentioned here.Like i said i AGREE with the posters statement,BUT only on paper not in reality.

There is going to be cheating in any game. Honestly, no matter what kind of system they try to impliment, there will always be someone trying to find a way around it. That's what the STF is for. They've at least stepped up the efforts to take care of the people that are cheating. I know it's tough for them to really tell they're using a claim bot because it doesn't show up in any way on the server. Only the speed hacks and such do that. There is no real way to stop cheating 100%. Making an NM spawn possibly from a month to an hour is pretty over the top. And people would still find a way to cheat.

exactly, cheating will be around for almost ever, all games have bots and stuff like this, though i do credit SE for doing a pretty good job at cutting down the RMT forces (though they are back within a day)

a month timer thats random, well mabey 1 mob or 2 that pop in more common areas (to higher lvls of course) but there is always issues with that. besides instanced things the outside NM spawns would never be done becuase you would hafta call apon your guild to gather in amoments notice (and knowing the RMT they would have bots waiting there anyways, they find stuff reguardless)

one of the positive things was making things (or the bigger drops EX) it stopped the bots from camping it, though it did ruin peoples constant hunt of them becuase you wouldnt make any money at that point. its just somthing complicated and hard to work around, but hopefully they will do somthing good (i really dont want all instant NM/bosses.

all i hope at this point is that they take the things that worked for FFXI and keep it going, that and they dont make this game another "causual players game" like everything else seems to be nowadyas, i hoe that they relize they have such a large and stable crowd because they were diffrent and kept the game for the more hardcore crowd.

NO MICRO TRANS FOO (yah just had to re-enforce that)

From your lips to SE's ears.

Or... your fingers to SE's eyes in this case.
