EA officially joins STEAM. To this I say, screw you EA, and screw you STEAM.

From what I've read here and on the Steam forums, EA games on Steam (at least the new ones that just got added) don't use SecureROM, they use Steam's DRM (which I can live with since it actually benefits me - don't have to keep track of CDs and don't have to do anything other than reinstall when Vista self-destructs).

So, at least in this regard, EA gets my thumbs up and I might start buying their games again once I get home after the holidays - I don't have a 360 so I missed Mass Effect :P

Anything that helps online distribution of games is good news for me, since it's so much easier to buy and download a game online than to buy a physical box from shop. And the copy protections don't look so bad either.

Except that Steam is screwing their European customers since they first price their products in dollars, then convert the prices to Euros using their invented exchange rate 1€  = 1$ instead of the real exchange rate 1€ = 1.4$. Even if their European prices include VAT, screw Steam for screwing us Europeans and screw EA for having anything to do with Steam.

You were saying? It has everything including such as taxes and VAT. Big win for gamers I think, finally forced EA to react (I'm sure this is just the first round of improvements from EA, and may even force more companies on steam) and remove DRM (or atleast the limited installations).

Bit of a FUD imo.

I personally love steam its a great idea on paper. For example i have just recently [3 days ago] spent £3.00 on X-com Apocolypse a game i havent played in 9-10 years and im loving it

I don't want STEAM because:

1. Overpriced by like 60% for Europeans. I can buy cheaper by ordering a game by plane from freaking Japan than I can order online from Steam. Ripoff.

2. Why do you make me download stuff I don't want. I didn't need to use any interface program to download before. Now you're telling me I need a download manager for both EA game and Valve's trash? I'll pass thanks.

Exactly. I'm not buying anything from Valve or EA again.

I dont know why all the hate for EA and valve they got great games.

I wish they would make it so you need Steam to play their games even if you didn't buy it from Steam like how Valve games work because this would really help against casual Piracy and make alot more sales as if you need Steam to play a game most people just buy it. Also this means they would use Steam features and build them into their games like Steam achievements and the Steam server browser and we could wave goodbye to GFWL.

Em ... that means they are setting a separate price for the EU.  Nothing wrong with that.  You're (falsely) assuming they are simply converting at a fudge rate ... what they are doing is setting a EUR price at the same positive value as the USD price.  That makes it more expensive in the EU, but that's life.  Many things are more expensive in the EU, thanks the to EU's closed market,

Em ... that means they are setting a separate price for the EU.  Nothing wrong with that.  You're (falsely) assuming they are simply converting at a fudge rate ... what they are doing is setting a EUR price at the same positive value as the USD price.  That makes it more expensive in the EU, but that's life.  Many things are more expensive in the EU, thanks the to EU's closed market,

For example: CoD: WaW, 49,99£ on steam...

Guess the price I get it for at the local store? 399NOK wich is 39,9£.

Order it in any of my usual online stores, and the price is about the same, 39,9£

Steam is FUBAR. No one of my norwegian friends buy games from Steam any longer, not since they did that.

I had Half Life 2, and was loving it. Then there was a glitth, it couldn't verify my account with STEAm, and I couldn't play anymore, which turned the game into a coaster.

No thanks. I'm not rewarding developers for making their game hard to play for legitimate customers.

Fallout 3 and Bethesda got it right. I put in the DvD, I play the game and have fun, no crap, no Steam.

They didn't convert the prices to the local currencies, they just changed the $ into a £ or €.

Wich means a game that costs 49$ now costs 49£ or 49€... Considering that the conversion rate is not 1$ = 1£ or 1€... It's FUBAR.

Steam in Europe isnow is more expensive than the local electronics stores, wich allready sells games 10-50% above the regular prices.

and I just checked, most games are the same price as game.co.uk, or higher of a few £

orange box at game: RRP 49.99

                                      Now £39.99

steam : £16.99

even call of duty 4 that used to be £40 on steam is now the same price as game.co.uk , £29.99

(yes I know some place might be cheaper but game is the most well known online and highstreet retailer)

It’s official. Game publishing giant Electronic Arts today formally joined Valve's Steam service, as speculated earlier this week following the sudden appearance of the Spore end-user license agreement on the platform. Five titles are available now for purchase via Steam, including Mass Effect, Need for Speed Undercover, Spore, FIFA Manager 09 and Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, plus the Spore Creepy & Cute Parts Pack.

The games are apparently available without the controversial SecuROM DRM they initially shipped with. This is truly a testament to the popularity of Steam and a big win for Valve, considering EA traditionally has digitally distributed their internally-developed PC games only though its own EA Store and Steam competitors like Direct2Drive. Other recent EA releases expected to join the Steam lineup “in the coming weeks” include Dead Space, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 and Mirror’s Edge.

Wrong. It means Europeans will choose European and Asian games over US games. I can get a game with a BOX cheaper from a plane from the US in $ than I can buying it from Steam....how crazy is that.

Linux is already preferred here by many governments and people, only games are still behind. If you think Europeans don't care about prices you are very very wrong. Iceland is basically bankrupt and Belgium has no government because they used state influence to change the courts decision about the Fortis bank. ALL of this is because of financial crisis and the falling US $.

We care very much about what happens to our money and the US costs us enough already. If in such a climate an American company sets the Euro equal to the $, when it's not, Europeans won't buy it and will resort to buying only Euro/Asian products. (See Linux/PS3)

Linux means independence from US set prices and control. China is developing thier own OS for that exact same reason. Most people don't want globalisation at all.
