I fail to see the relation between IP blocking and the need to have a publisher. Please explain.

Ok lets say you're making a MMOG as a small company. You want to release it, but you need a publisher to handle all the details that your company isn't capable of handling by yourself. You'll need support, servers, server maintenance, etc all throughout the world. Its a task that is simply beyond the scope of what your company of developers can handle.

So you start looking for a publisher. You find that not many publishers are interested in publishing an indie MMOG during a global financial recession. None of the available publishers operate globally. You find one that has a good name for themselves (Acclaim) that is interested. Unfortunately they only operate in certain parts of the world.

As part of the negotiations Acclaim makes it clear that exclusive access in their publishing territories is standard practice. This makes sense because multiple competing publishers in the same areas is not only confusing to customers, but its just bad business practice.

So how do you enforce publishing territories and ensure exclusive access. There is no 100% sure way to do this, but I guess they decided that IP blocking was good enough.

Do you have a better solution?

Well copeland there isnt actually... Yes they have ip blocker... so change your ip too say your from France or Germany (tried that still wont work) ok change the whole proxy (Oh... that didnt work either) yes you can download the client... yes thats an easy workaround... but acutally registering and logging on.... thats a completely different story and no its not easy.

took me 1 minute to create an account, 30 seconds to verify my e-mail, 90 minutes to download the game, 2 minutes to install, 10 minutes to customize a warrior and voila.. i didn't find anything difficult about the process.

What did you use to get past the IP block for account creation and playing the game? I check ping24.org and it doesn't resolve for me.

This is just my opinion, but I don't feel it's a big loss if you can't get in.

The mouse driven action based combat, and the 'go here, fetch this, talk to this person-standard RPG quests', IMO doesn't offer anything that couldn't be accomplished by playing a game like Diablo2 in multiplayer... and because of that fact what I experienced wasn't  enough to get me to pay to play to experience what luys beyond level 7.

Now, to prepare myself for the attacks and flames, I will go put on my fire proof undergarments. :D

There are no IP blocks on playing the game itself. Simply put in the URL for the registration process and then when you receive your e-mail to confirm it put that URL in there and it works fine from then on out.

I just played a warrior to 7. I can see it becoming boring. I really don't know what the game would be like at higher levels. No raiding.. i guess more questing and pvp.. not really enough to keep me playing. I need raids and pvp with a purpose. I didn't have to group. I don't know if there's forced grouping as you go but probably have to take a pass on this game myself for now.

I did crash once. I didn't notice any real bugs though. Seems quite polished. I think the game has a bright future actually even though it's probably not for me.
