So I've been thinking of getting the lich king for christmas but i'm a little confsed for one:

say you bought the game and excited to play it and you made a new character (example: a gnome warlock) and I've been thinking. If your created character lvls to 55 or up, do you now make a death knight from wotlk? Thanks and have a happy holiday!

Am I that curious?

Your question is a little vague. I'm not sure what it is you're asking. You don't need a Death knight to play WOTLK content. The Death Knight class is unlocked once you have a level 55 or higher character on your account. And yes, the Death Knight comes at level 55 and it takes 1hr of play time to get level 58 (basically a tutorial). But really, it's nothing amazing. They reduced the amount of exp required to level from 20-60 by 30% and increased the amount of exp obtained from quest rewards by 30%. So you shouldn't have any issues getting a level 55 in under a week. So don't level a Death Knight just because it comes at level 55. You really need to enjoy the class itself or it's useless.

Plus, servers are flooded with Death Knights. So if you make one, be warned that it will be hard to find a guild. I would get a level 80 warlock and then level the death knight in your free time and use it as an alt. They are good for pvp and just having fun with when you're bored on your main.

Playing: Aion, WAR, WoW, Guild Wars.

Played: Eve, LOTRO, Runescape, DAoC, Planetside, SWG, EQ, EQ2.

Wanting to try: Darkfall, AoC, Vanguard

Waiting For: Star Wars The Old Republic

Death Knights are not amazingly 'better' than other classes.  If you have a 55 warlock, there would be no reason to think you would need to make a DK to continue.  All of the classes are fairly well balanced at lvl 80.

Now I will say this.  No matter what class you do decide to play until 80, you definitely should make a DK and play him through the DK starter zone (lvl 55-58) just because that is some of the best content Blizzard ever added to WOW.
