Taken from the Official Forums: In response to requests from our players we are offering a limited time opportunity to move any characters on identified servers to a designated target galaxy at no charge. We believe that by offering a Free Character Transfer Service (CTS) in this manner we can address the concerns we have heard players voice with respect to server population. It is our hope that those of you who are looking to move will take this opportunity to do so beginning on January 13, 2009, and that this will bring with it a fresh sense of excitement and enthusiasm that will extend across all the galaxies. Free Character Transfer will begin at 12:01AM PST on January 13, 2009, and will only be offered to those accounts with characters created on or before December 10, 2008 at 11:59 PM PST on the identified galaxies listed below. Again, the only way to qualify for the Free Character Transfer is to be on one of the identified Free Character Transfer servers and move to one of the targeted galaxy servers and this is only available on a one-time/once per character basis. The Free Character Transfer service will end on March 31, 2009 at 11:59PM PST. More Details Effective January 13, 2009, and ending on March 31, 2009, the character(s) you have active on the identified current "transferred from" galaxies* listed below, that were created on or before December 10, 2008 at 11:59PM PST, may be moved to one of the destination servers at no charge*. This option will be available on a one-time/once per characterbasis. The current "transferred from" galaxy servers include: * Corbantis The valid destination galaxy servers include: * Ahazi Free Character Transfer Service Rewards – Available to Transferred Characters that Meet Free CTS Requirements Along with the painting, players who transfer to a valid destination galaxy as part of the promotional free CTS will also receive a gift box which can only be used as a gift to give to a waiting welcomer on the new galaxy. Once the gift box is given to another player, it can be opened to reveal the same painting received by the transferor but with a new inscription which includes the "welcomer" recipient's name and the moving character's name and home galaxy, as a "thank you" for their warm welcome of the newcomer (the inscription is only visible when you use the "Examine" option to view the painting). It is in the spirit of peace and friendship that we offer these gifts and hope that the goodwill that comes from sharing these gifts will spread across the galaxy like the stars overhead. We want your experience with Star Wars Galaxies to be the best possible and look forward to seeing you in your new home galaxy! More details on this promotion will be released in the coming days and weeks. May the Force be with you! Terms and Conditions Apply: * Free Character Transfer is available beginning at 12:01AM PST on January 13, 2009, through 11:59PM PST on March 31, 2009. This "Free" Character Transfer Service only applies to a one-time/once per character move from an identified server to a designated target galaxy server as determined by SOE in its sole and absolute discretion. regardless of the what they once were, presently the players on those 'dead servers' aren't having much fun so its great that SOE is giving free transfers. They could just continue charging players $50 for a transfer [

I 'get' the list of destination servers. Not everyone is going to want to go to an established high population server. It gives the player base from low pop servers to decide where to go. Its up to the community and it's their opportunity to redefine some of the lower population destination servers. Why not make a new RP/PvP/PvE server? Someone just needs to come out and say "Ahazi is going to be the new RP server" "Gorath is the new PVP server" You never know, it might just stick [

I seem to be alone in thinking that the gifts are a nice touch. lol I think it's a shame that they're not increasing character slots though. I used to play on multiple servers and would love to have all my toons on Bloodfin. I don't play anymore, but it's still something I'd like to do. I'm sentimental like that

The people transfering are given a gift pack that they can trade to a person on their new server that will give that person the same painting. I also very much doubt that if they do decide to shut the servers down fully after the transfer event that those left on them will need to pay to leave to a new server.

Yeah Kauri is essentially dead. Lowca is pretty much in the same boat. My original toon from launch was on Lowca. Tecmo Bowl. |

This is undoubtedly a good thing for the current players, but I fear it doesn't go far enough. The top servers seem to float around a "medium" level, and as we know medium is only half way to capacity. It would stand to reason that 3 "medium" servers could theoretically fit onto 1 server. With this in mind I would estimate that the servers could be condensed from 25 down to 5 or 6 - less then half of what they are allowing to stay open. SoE should be taking advantage of the this because I have little doubt that the servers wont dramatically increase in the next year or so, especially as we approach the release of TOR.
*edit This is of course assuming they'll plan to shut down servers after the transfers are complete.

Hozloff, now you are being paranoid or just trolling.
I have played many games that have downsized since their initial release and I have never seen any of these games charge a player to move their characters. What always happens to those who wait is they are moved to a server they could not choose.

Why don't they just make 1 single server? Then the game would be 'heavy' populated almost 24/7. When will these SOE people pull their heads out of their asses?

I would also like to know how this would "kill pvp". Merging all servers to one will not reach the capacity which one server PRE-CU enjoyed. |
