You have a couple fantastic options out there, for starters if you're new to MMO's in general, definitely give World of Warcraft a shot.  It's hugely popular with millions of subscribers, it's easy to grasp, a crap-ton of fun to play and I'm sure you can find people in your real-life to play with you.

Could also try Everquest 2, it's not as popular but it's still a lot of fun with numerous player classes to choose from, so it's easy to find something to your liking.  It's slightly more difficult than World of Warcraft in terms of learning curve, but the leveling is pretty fast and they're always releasing and refining their content.

Ultimately I felt a lot more attached to my accomplishments in EQ2 over WoW but that's simply because EQ2 suited my tastes more.

Both games have free trials, give them a whirl!

the first mmo i played was world of warcraft (yes, i was that delayed into mmos). good graphics.. not remarkable but yea good. there's also a lot of interaction with the environment there like swimming and climbing the highest peaks. grat gameplay.. the characters and their skills have a story. there's the alliance and the horde. can go solo or multiplayer during raids.

then right now, i'm into atlantica online. turn-based. good graphics too. less interaction but more tactics involved with controlling mercenaries and handling a guild. it actually is more of a multiplayer experience for me than wow. storyline is about finding the lost city of atlantis and what i really like about this is the mythical/ancient history behind it. so if  you're a history geek, you should really try this out.

I've been playing a fun game by the name of Vendetta Online for quite a while now. You can be a trader, pirate, thief, bounty hunter, miner, weapons dealer, nationalist, mercenary, etc. With player owned stations and player owned capital ships on the way the game is gonna get a lot more intense. Get in on the ground floor before 2.0!

Vendetta Online has an intense and skillful pvp system that is twitch based. You have to be skilled to be the best but it is riddiculously fun fighting tons of other people in various nation wars, border skirmishes, fighting pirates, pirating, or just practicing your skills. Definitely check it out

World of Warcraft is incredibly friendly to new players.  You can play casually and probably reach max level in 2 or 3 months, but it depends.  The end game emphasizes on raiding with players to gain better equipment.

If you're more of a PvPer then Warhammer Online is for you.  The end game emphasizes on some raiding for gear but more large scale pvp battles to capture cities and gear as well.

I'd have to agree that WoW is very friendly to new players, and perhaps a good choice for you to cut your teeth on. However really depends on what you likes/dislikes are and what your looking for.
