So I've played wow since launch and have gotten sick and tired of it, I love rpg's and story based games but wow is just too shallow for my tastes. Recently I've given swg a 2nd try, and have grown bored of it and am wondering, is eq2 the epic i've been looking for all these years. Is it interesting enough to keep my attention or is it just another mmorpg similar to wow, just another flavor?

Blizzard uses WOW to harvest hours played into bottles so that the dev team can remain immortal

If you seek for depth and challenge, EQ2 is not much different than WoW.
EQ2 was a serious game until 1 year ago, now is going towards the WoW crowd.

Anyway don't let me stop you from playing this game, EQ2 is not that bad, it just isn't anything special anymore, and if you are tired of WoW, I am not sure you will find what you are looking for in EQ2.
Anyway there is a free trial available, give it a try, you might  like the different Lore, Graphic and setting.

PS: BTW if it can help you, I played EQ2 for 3 years, but I just now moved to WoW, which to me at the moment is more fun and challenging than EQ2 (although challenging is probably the wrong word for WoW).

EQ2s gameplay is pretty similar to WoW really....There are some different things in the game and it could possibly be a future home for ya.......Make sure you have a very solid PC before buying EQ2....It places pretty high demands on your system, especially later when you start raiding....... I played EQ2 for about 6 months before I got bored but I think alot of that had to do with playing EQ1 for so long and EQ2 just not measuring up.......While you can group and do things with guildies it seems like most people solo in EQ2 with occasional grouping to do a dungeon for quests (ie same as WoW).......

Just like any game I think you need to try it for yourself and make your own judgments........Some people love the graphics some people hate it...Some people love the character models, some people hate them....Its all a matter of taste.

There are ppl who do or did play WoW and play EQ2. They can give you better insight if this has what you are looking for.

IMO, EQ2 is a little better than WoW.

Two things that hurt it are, firstly, the very f-ed up camera angles. Fighting in a dungeon with your camera going all haywire is very annoying. The second and biggest obstacle is the lack of players.

I played WoW. Lasted 3 weeks. Never again.

EQ2 is much better no matter what the naysayers spout.

They are similar games. As far as leveling goes, EQ2 is harder to solo to max because of fewer quests that are soloable and easy to run. I prefer EQ2 because the player base is more friendly. Not friendly as in give handouts, but more friendly as in not belittling people.

I used to have a life before this came along.

Okay first thing... one thread per question is more than enough, you started three within 10 minutes! Are you a Sony Employee doing viral marketing? Makes me wonder... now for my answer to your question.

If you started playing MMOs with WoW, you may be sorely dissapointed with EQ2, not because it's a bad game, but because it requires a great deal more patience and work than WoW.

Leveling will be much harder... you'll be lucky to make a level a day in EQ2 after 20th. You'll have to work to find good gear and items, although the chance that something usable drops off a monster is a bit more common than WoW...

To just put it in a nut shell, WoW is made for 12 year olds with 12 year old attention spans, EQ2 is made for adults, so well, it's not going to be as easy.

Will you enjoy the game? I loved it. It's an amazing game. The graphics aren't cartoony like WoW, and some of the landscapes are just amazing... I think it's definently a game all serious gamers should try, even if Sony manages it... Sony is possibly the worst gaming company in the freaking world.

So try it and see for yourself, is my opinion.

If you're reading this, you probably need to get some sun.

You find WoW more challanging than EQ2? did you ever try the T8 raids in EQ2?

WoW raids are a Joke compared to EQ2's and for leveling its ALOT harder in EQ2, I did 55 levels in a week on WoW try that on EQ2.

I've played EQ2 since Beta and Played WoW for almost 2 years now, I also play WAR when I want to PvP but am finding that about all there is to WAR, for my money EQ2 for RP and Story, WoW when you want to solo and just take it easy, and WAR for the PVP goodness.

I also subscribe to these three at the moment and I agree. That is the reason I play all three, They offer me three different play experiences. EQ2 is not WoW despite what so post here. I love both games and would recommend EQ2 to a WoW veteran. Play it for what it is and you will enjoy it.

At release, I would have said you're in for a rough ride.

Two years later, I would have said you'll have to adjust but you'll probably do ok.

Today I say, you'll feel at home.

In other words, EQ2 started out as a hard, an insanely hard and unforgiving game, to the point where it stops being funny. This was toned down over the times (or "adjusted to player complaints", as I prefer to say) and today it's coming close to WoW. It's not yet there, but I almost feel like SOE is making it more and more WoW'y with every patch and expansion.

I hope you have tried the new pack that just came out, the word easy is not something I would relate to it, soloing in the new zones is VERY hard and the 20 something new dungeons are leveled from easy/medium/hard, well you better be well geared and know your stuff just to do the easy, not even got to the Medium ones.

I beta'd the new expansion. I can definately say that it was NOT  easy. Its definately soloable but you'll die alot more than you usually do.

It was.... interesting. Even after betaing it, I still don't know if I like it or not.

I'm liking the new pack, but then I play EQ2 for the grouping part of it, I'm not much of a soloer in EQ2, out of the two new expansions WotLK and tSO I'm liking WotLK best, but the eq2 pack does have so VERY cool crafting changes.

It depends. If you like solo play or PvP, don't bother.

If you like dungeons and RAIDing you should really try it, there are where the game really shines.

You should give it a shot. You can also try the trial.

I've played eq 2 quite a bit and decided to try a trial today  before renewing my sub. I have a quadcore at 3.2 ghz and a nice system overall. My last core on a quadcore was at 100 percent use the entire time, never letting up, even at the lowest possible settings on a high end computer. I know they said they added multicore support with the last expansion but maybe it is only in some areas. I don't want my cpu pegged nonstop as it ignores the other cores.

I did some research and a lot of people get the same effect. I guess they are still continuing to optimize this. I'll check back in once it uses hardware a little more efficiently. I do not expect this game to use all 4 cores in a perfectly balanced away, but I also do not expect it to peg my last core at 100 percent without ever letting up, even on the lowest settings possible.

But still, a very good game. I recommend it to anyone.

rofl... its always funny when people don't think. You do realize that this programming is a brand new addition to the game, right? It was only created to be a single core game. And you do realize that, because of that, it doesn't automatically turn on when you log in, right? You have to go into options to turn it on if it doesn't do it by itself.

OK, I played EQ2 from launch and still do, kind of. My brother plays WoW so I figured what the heck at least I can chat with him and gave it a shot. I have been in WoW for about a month and where is my honest take:

New player experience:
This goes to EQ2 hands down, starting off in WoW was like being kicked off a boat and being told to swim east then never receive further instruction. The new player experience in EQ2 is really top notch and will get you really involved in how the game works and not just ‘go there and click on some stuff’.

Playability:
WoW gets this, the games is so basic it runs on a Commie 128 and anyone can pick up and go with it.

Lore:
EQ2 all the way, take a trip to the official lore forums and look for links posted by the devs (red names) and you will see for yourself.

Combat systems:
Tie, and I am saying this is a tie due to playing games with combat systems like VGSoH that are actually complex. Both games are button mashers and yeah you need to be able to count and read icons to raid.

End game:
Not really there in WoW so no comment

Raids:
Not really there in WoW so no comment

Leveling:
Quasi tie? WoW is a fast paced grind where you hop from hot zone to hot zone to grind quests. EQ2 due to smaller population is a series of solo quest lines that starting at the 30’s you need to tandem to efficiently level. (that means that there are several 30+ zones all with quest lines you need to follow and you will need to do most of them in contrast to the sub 30 stuff where one line will pretty much get you set for the next level).

PVP:
WoW wins, it was built for it

PVE:
EQ2 wins, it was built for it

Complexity:
EQ2, fairly complex but very redundant
WoW, not complex but mildly redundant (more crap at a faster pace)

Crafting:
EQ2 all the way, they actually have a system and function per tier, WoW is kind of just a cash sink and a click and done thing, not really a class just a thing to do. Note: both are poor in contrast to VGSoH

Population:
Playing WoW feels like the height of EQ2 when it comes to population, it is a pretty good feeling. EQ2, feels like hanging at a coffee shop with a few friends.

Take what you will from this hope it helps, and falme if you want I never bother reading it.

I run on a single AMD 3800+ at 2,2Ghz with 100% CPU usage, but it is the RAM that matters the most in this game. I bought an extra 1GB (I now have 2GB) and am running at 30FPS in the wild with all settings on high (except for shadows which are turned off). So all in all, CPU usage doesn't matter, you can get very nice FPS with that system if you have at least 2GB of RAM.

I'm sorry, I don't agree. I tried this on a single core 3.2 and got nowhere with the graphics. Then I switched to an E7200 (modest dual core) and I'm able to run at medium to high with good frame rates, in other words, the game is now playable. So the processor speed is a big part of this game. More RAM will help too, of course.

I can tell ya right now, I'm running on mostly high-max graphics. My FPS is around 35-40 on outside zones, which I think is pretty decent for this processor. The only problem I really have with this game is alt-tabbing while loading zones gives me a 5 second freeze. Other than that and shadows (which I have turned off), it's all about RAM.

i can have max settings in most areas except ROK zones like kp and kj where it just gets awfull because of all the trees and crap
