"My days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle" - Firefly |
As a general rule if you browse our forums here you will find that the forum for every game is filled with flames of that game, complaints about how terrible it is.. etc. The only postive threads you find are for games we havent got our hands on yet =P.
So lets post on this thread about what game we are CURRENTLY enjoying (no use reminiscing about days past) for the benefit of others seeking a good gaming experience.
I recently returned to WoW (much against my will) and I'm surprised to find I'm enjoying it again. WoW is certainly the highest quality MMO ever made and it deserves to be king of the hill. I wish someone else would come up with a new product with this level of quality... something sandbox-ish would be nice.

Lets face it, MMOs today are turning into single player console games with a chat box included. |
Id be happy if I could find one game that suits me. 10 years in the genre and all Ive got to show for it is disappointment and a sour stomach. |

I am enjoying FFXI quite a bit. It's very refreshing to goto a game with a community as awesome as theirs. I've come to realize gameplay mechanics/graphics pale in comparison to community and immersion for me personally. This is why I loved everquest so much back in the day because of the awesome community and world. FFXI has exceeded my expectations on what a good MMO community should be like. Additionally, I think the gameplay mechanics strike a nice balance from being too archaic/difficult or too modern/easy. My only gripe initially would be the limited UI. This is the only MMO I have ever complained about the UI but I have learned to adapt and work with it. |

Well recently went back to FFXI, which was my first MMO back in '03 and a game I played longer than any other MMO. There is just no other game out there that is anything like it. The combat system is different then any game out on the market. No game has captured my attention and has never felt as epic as FFXI, going out adventuring with friends unlocking advanced jobs and nothing in this game comes easy. I just started hatching my chocobo egg and its going to take a month in real time until im going to be able to ride it.
I don't feel like my hand is being held in this game. I don't know where Im going to run into my next quest since there is nothing marking the NPC quest givers. I also love how when you get quests you get a cut scene to go along with what your reading. Which to me is awesome, and is very immersive, you see the npc's talking to you and each other. Which is another unique thing I love about this game.
This IMHO is the best game out there and Ive played just about every P2P MMO out there.

Currently I'm enjoying Age of Conan, which have been the game of my choice since launch. The game has been through a bumpy ride, but is now shaping up nicely, which more and more people are discovering every day. |

Originally posted by Swiftblade13 Why do people say that WOW is the highest quality MMO ever made when its probably had more downtime then any MMO ever made? WOW evolved into a polished game but it was far from it at release. Of course any game this OLD is going to be polished. I played WOW for about 2 years off and on. Came back to max out with TBC for about a month and quit again do to boredom and lack of PVP . Battlegrounds are not PVP and i hated watiing in line for them. I would also like to point out that over half of the WOW subscriber base is the Asian market. It appeals more to that market then the U.S. Market but hey dollars are dollars. The game is polluted by gold farmers a HUGE negative to any MMO economy. I thought about trying WOTLK but i know in about a month i'll have seen or done it all and be back to square 1 bored with the game. |

Sorry, but posting in every thread that the game you want is Darkfall just seems like trolling to me. It wouldn't matter what the topic was, gear, pvP, sandbox, etc., you should wait for Darkfall. And the OP specifically asked for games you were CURRENTLY playing. Are you CURRENTLY playing Darkfall? If not, then wtf??!!
Anyways, I'm not playing an MMO at the moment, but I am enjoying Fallout 3. It's a great RPG, although it's single player and I would rather be online with other players. |

I was just thinking about this the other day. There are times that I avoid this site because it is such a "fun vacuum". Seems that people love to share (or force) their negative opinions onto others without sharing a lot of the good stuff. Not to mention there are many people that do not post because they don't want to listen to a downright vile comments that people make here. At the moment, I am enjoying WoW too. I am not plowing through it like many of my level 80 friends did, but instead I am taking it in story by story and zone by zone. I just hit 73 last night. Some of the stories are great. There are some that feel like they were thrown together. All in all - good source of entertainment for now. I am not sure if I will stick around for the level 80+++ gear up grinding though. I still play Eve online on the side. Haven't been doing too much in that game lately, but I will soon as I am finishing up my Capital Ship skills. I tried Atlantica Online last night. That was a refreshing change. Reminds me of the old FF games on the playstation with updated graphics. The storyline is a bit too "weak" for me though. But, hey... it's a free time waster. I'm also giving Vanguard another shot. I really like the game, but even with my opteron 165 at 2.5GHz, 2 Gigs of Ram and a 9600 OC 512MB card - I still studder at moderate graphics settings every so many feet. I have a feeling that it isn't the graphics though. It feels like every time the game loads new objects off the disk it studders for a second or two. So, every so many feet it gets jerky. My disks are fine having 2 raids both stripped - one for system and the other for programs/data. Both are kept defragged weekly. It's almost like I need to find where the cache setting is in the game and crank it up. If I can get it to run right - I may resub as it does seem to fill my crafter fix. I'm also eager to try out Chronicles of Spellbourn. I don't know too much about it yet, but I would like to give it a shot. |

First let me clarify: I've never played WoW. But from what I understand, as I learn more about the history of the industry, I think WoW probably set the standard for all MMO's to come. Some would even say its a mold that needs to be broken. Yet because WoW was the first and has lasted the longest, it is naturally the standard to which all others are compared. You are correct in that any new game is going to have kinks, and a game so established is going to look and feel polished by comparison. People who are not looking beyond the face of their monitors don't care about any of these things; all they know is that it works for them. It's to your credit that you can see through the hype. However, I would caution anyone not to sell short the amount of downtime spent on any MMO, as this is stuff of attentive devs, repairs, fixes, updates and the like. It's far the lesser of evils. However unless the need is urgent, the SCHEDULING of downtime can be an issue with me. Now whether the subscriber base is Asian or not is a moot point as far as I'm concerned. Either you like the game or you don't, no matter it's appeal to anyone else. Gold Farmers are a pet peeve of mine and you'll get no arguement from me that they can overwhem a game. I think some games at least are getting a handle on this. I do know there was a precedence-setting trial that was won last...winter? I think? When several of the gaming companies banded together to fight Peons4Hire in court --- and won. WoW spearheaded the thing I believe. Since then there has been a dramatic drop in the presence of gold farmers --- at least in the games I play, anyway. And by the way, I play City of Heroes, City of Villains, and Lord of the Rings Online. City of Heroes --- in my opinion --- is the best of the three. There are elements of Lord of the Rings that I love and wish could be incorporated into City of Heroes, but given a choice as is, I would choose City of Heroes any day of the week. I've been playing it almost since it went live 4 1/2 years ago, and I love it. |

Longtime MMO veteran myself... (typical pedigree. UO, EQ2, SWG, WoW, EVE etc..) Currently not playing WOTLK, just not convinced. Having a lot of fun in LOTRO, though. My kin is great. Very mature, laid-back, and I think we are all parents or grandparents so no pressure when something "unplanned" happens that needs to be seen to. Additionally, I decided to give Ryzom a try last night. I don't know what I thought it was, but it was definitely NOT what I thought it would be. I started off with the idea of focusing on harvesting, and once I was in the game it took me about 15 minutes to say "this reminds me an awful lot of the old SWG...". Once I got the mineral tracking and prospecting going, it did remind me of running out on the dunes looking for mins. The graphics are kind of quaint, and so far the combat is pretty standard, but the skill system where you can set your own skill parameters is pretty great. A level-less (one might argue a 4x level, but that's another point of view) system where you get xp for what you're doing is a nice change. Ended up burning several hours there.
How dare you present him with logic! Don't you understand? He fights epic fights, in epic games, with epic toons....eats epic food and takes epic dumps! He has more e..pic..icity...ness in his little finger than you have in your whole unepic body! - ChicagoCub |

An honest review of EVE Online: I've played EVE for almost 3 years. I have left the game a few times, tried other MMOs, but I always come back to EVE. I think for me EVE gives me everything I want in an MMO. Sandbox, challenge, social, political, and economical parts all rolled into one. 1st EVE is not a game for the impatient. Your skills train in real time. Meaning if it takes 4 hours 3 minutes to train, that's how long it takes. Your skills train rather you are online or not. Both these ideas aren't in any other MMO that I'm aware of. There's no power leveling so to speak in game. The game is played on one server. With an average of 35,000 players on at any one time. With over 250,000 total, the game is always alive. 5,000 systems gives you more than enough room to move around. You won't truely understand just how big this game is intil you open the map and zoom out. Then set a course for the other side of the galaxy. Sandbox: There's nothing or no one telling you were to go next. You can do whatever, and I mean whatever, you want to do. Mine, PVE, PVP, pirate, etc. It's all up to you. CCP has given the players complete rule of the game. They have set some basic rules of play and that's the end of it. They have given 3 areas for the 3 classes of players: High Sec where you can PVE and mine in peace. Low Sec where you can PVP, along with mining and PVE, just with added risk. However with added risk comes added reward. Null Sec is where the players "run" the game. Alliances control space, they patrol their space, they live there, mine there, etc. The alliance can do whatever they want. CCP stays out of the way. Social: This game will weed out the inmature players within a week. Sometimes within hours. You're left with a community of people that are one of the best around. They act just like the game does. They won't hand you information that you could look up for yourself. They won't hold your hand and tell you what to trade, sell, make, explore, etc. But if you ask a real question, one that isn't in LEET and uses actual grammar, you'll be overwhelmed with their responses. There's in game EVE-Voice, that's free. EVE Radio "plays music for the masses" EVE TV a news program about the game with real people. Political: SWG had player ran cities, EVE has player ran regions. Hundreds of systems controlled by a group of players. Just like in the real world, governements make and break treaties to their advantage. Same in EVE. EVE players even elect other players to go to CCP's HQ in Iceland to repersent the player base. Economy: 100% player driven. Billions are traded daily. CCP has a PhD in economics giving reports on the market. They have talked about EVE's economy at Harvard! You can also use in game currency, ISK, to buy time cards. Letting you play for free really.
EVE is not your typical MMO. You will either love it or hate it. I love it. Alot of people don't. EVE is like NASCAR: People think it's dumb and you just turn left all the time. Yet when you give it a chance you notice that going left is the most technical thing you've ever seen. EVE is just a dumb spaceship game where you point and click. EVE doesn't have a bunch of childish or lazy players. Game mechanics weed them out. EVE isn't a game that tells you you can only do this. EVE is what you make it. Give it a try. But leave your typical MMO mentality at the door.

WoW haters make me laugh. Its not that we hate WoW, we just think its so incredibly limited and totally without vision!
If I were to choose the best game out there right now, it would probably be Vanguard or Cox |

to be honest I'm not all that excited about Darkfall. I might try it, but Jesus Christ you don't need to jump at my throat for saying that what he wants sounds like Darkfall.
I guess the Anti-Darkfall trolls are just as bad as the super-fanatic fanbois. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

I love my LoTRO! I can have the crappiest day in the world and I log into thAT game and am instantly relaxed. The graphics and the sounds in that game are unparalleled! They soothe my soul like no other MMO has ever done. And it's not the Lore story-lines or the Middle-Earth world that thrills me. I am NOT a Tolkien fan. I am a MMO fan and LoTRO is about perfect to me. Gorgeous graphics, an overabundance of solo quests, frequent new content and a excellent community...:) And yearly expansions OMG! That's a Gamer's fantasy to get huge new expansions and LoTRO's going to get huge new land masses every single year! |

I keep coming back to Vanguard. I cancel my sub every time when new mmorpg comes out and i want to give it a try, but after a month or so I am resubscribing back to VG. It has been going like that for about a year so i guess i must enjoy this game. |

""An honest review of EVE Online:"" The biggest thing about EVE is that most players are constantly afk... it can make you feel pretty lonely out there. I didnt start to really enjoy the game till I found a really active corp with lots of action and chatter.

right now I am kinda all over the place. I have the WoW expansion, and as expansions go it is great! new DK starte area was fantastic, and Blizz actually added STORY this time! but then after playing a few days, seeing everyone just racing through it ignoring the content, to get the best gear and be "First" just disheartened me, dont get me wrong I am actually in a really great guild with people I have played with for years. I guess I finally caught the proverbial carrot Blizz keeps dangling.
I also resubbed to DDO and am enjoying experimenting with builds, but it really does seem more like a solo game than an MMO (IMO) I am playing Vanguard and am enjoying that as much as my craptastic computer will allow me, great game with fun diverse classes(Cleric class is really done well in that game) great crafting and always something to do as well as a fun community! and I am also playing SWG I never tried it pre NGE so thought I would give it a spin to see whats so horrid about it I kept reading about ( I have a morbid curiosity like that) I have to say it like nothing else I have really played and personally I am enjoying it...
As I said I am kinda all over the place atm hehe |

The other guy wrote a much better review, sorry
On topic yes I've played EVE Online alongside some beta testing I'm doing now. Unfortunately cant say anything about those. What I like about EVE I'm not forced into grinding out killing endless mobs and not stuck on the quest treadmill either. but if I want to slay mobs or do PVE I can when I want. |

Berrik, that was an incredible review. I wished I'd had it in hand before I tried Eve Online. I might have progressed a lot further. Still, I am just not ready to give up my character's imagery. I love creating a "toon" and putting it through its paces on screen. I love the costuming and the emotes. It is a ROLE PLAYING game after all. Having a toon at hand as a visual-aid really makes that enjoyable. |

actually I'm in a great and very active corp now. I was describing the experience I had with every other corp I tried in Eve... and I dont mean people were afk mining or macro-ratting. They were just constantly parking at POS's and going afk or in stations... because there was nothing really going on most of the time.
Now I'm in a great corp and loving it. Grymm |

I enjoy my time in FFXI, although it is a game with a lot of down time, looking for gorup or just plain travel takes a toll on the time you are online, I would say about 10% of my total online time is traveling. That being said its a great community based game, with 100% group based grinding which makes it enjoyable to me. I also love the classes it has to offer. Outside of FFXI guild wars is a win win for any online gamer, as a casual game or if you want to get hard core there is plenty to keep you busy then too! |
