For those Wow haters wanting Lake Wintergrasp to fail....

Though luck;

the genious gurus of Blizzard found a way to make the open world PvP of Lake W for ever to last in attracting players at maximum level.

"Items bound on account": you can earn PvP gear for every character you want to boost in the open world PvP.

Incredible innovative idea and a new addition to the already succesful system of PVE gear badges.

http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/11/24/wrath-101-heirloom-items-and-how-to-get-them/

Read the second part, because the first part is about the same system but for PVE gear.

"....there are daily quests in Lake Wintergrasp that you can do while you're fighting to get your faction the Essence of Wintergrasp buff. Wowhead has a full listing of those quests for both factions if you want to hunt them down....."

So I guess "empty world PvP zones" in old Wow (pre WotLK)  will be a history of the past in a few weeks when everyone will be 80.

10/10

And then still some say Blizz is not innovative.

Have fun all !!!!

He said it !!! the Wow hater said it !! ... the Magical Word ! THE magical word.

Sandbox.

Sandbox ! So even Wow haters admit Wow has sandbox elements. Indeed the whole world (buffs) changes according to who controls the open world PvP zone.

Great I couldn't have said it any better !.

Btw: The haters always said this open world PvP would be dead in WotLK. I think the above just showed a perfect answer to motivate the players in doing world PvP.

Something War developpers need to learn

Why are you still talking TheoryCraft?   The game has launched... folks are level 80... How is the world PvP?

Not.. how might it be... how is it right now?  (and I honestly do not know the answer to that... but it is the only reason I would ever even think of going back)

The news article of Wow insider I referred to was posted TODAY and most people aren't 80 at all. But of course NO one is going to LW. No one. We all sit home and turn with our fingers :))) Just ask anyone who is playing on our server Al'Akir :))).

Even at this level I am going to THE zone to fight. Only once a day because I still have a long way ahead to 80. The zone changes about twice of ownner each day and mostly it is being held by the hordes (I'd say 70/30 %) on our server.

But that's because most hordes power leveled much harder. Listen ALL BG's in Wow were always occupied at level 70 (mostly 30 to 40 of the same BG (totaling about 140 concurrent BG's) were up in the Battlegroups. Today at 5 PM - ONE AV was up.

Today... I had to wait 14 minutes to get into AV. Normal time is 3 minutes.

So I am convinced Wow has a PvP winner. No doubt at all.

OK.. I genuenly do not know the answer to this as I haven't followed the expansion much but:

Is this LW area you talk about as THE zone... is that the only place for world PvP?  If so, how does it differ from a BG?  Is it instanced?  Can there be 500 Horde and Alliance in the zone fighting at the same time?  If it's not instanced how is population imbalance handled?  Say there is a server that Horde outnumbers alliance 3-1... What happens?  is that zone just always going to be Horde controlled?

I've seen pictures of siege weapons... can these be used in city assaults (raids to kill the city kinds/Queens) or are they restricted to this LW zone?

One other question.... after all the years that AV has been available.... What could possess you to queue it up and wait 14 minutes to play it again when this new LW zone is open and you have all the other new content?

He was referring to "sandbox" in the 'leave the kids there while the adults do adult stuff' way, not the MMO definition of the term.

I confess, this new area seems to be a change for the better.

But without any real risk vs reward its still pretty much an empty shell of PVP.

But that's just my personal preference, others will enjoy the more casual nature of this pvp I'm sure.

Sorry I'm having trouble finding the Al'Akir server on the WoW website.  Is it spelled wrong or is it maybe a European server or something on a different list?

Short answers: Blizzard decided that to have succesful world PvP, you need to have the following elements:

- concentrated and not too much spread out so everyone groups up at a focus point.

- high levels (not like they did in TBC world PVP objects in the leveling up zones like 61-65)

- universal rules.

LW is a normal zone, but all players have automatically PvP on. Quests (daily even) are done that relate to PvP. It's unlimited and is not instanced.

Population balance is achieved by giving buffs (and gear advantage) to the lesser numbered faction. On our server I "guess" it's about 70/30 controlled by the hordes.

All equipment like tanks and artillery function only in this zone (although there is also a new Strand BG which uses some equipment). I don't know the mechanics of air planes yet. But I already rode the artillery and tanks. Personal mounts are not allowed in the zone.

The zone is big and the fortress is huge. It can't be compared with the Keeps I ve seen in War or AoC, it is MUCH bigger.

Controlling the zone gives world buffs and opens up an extra raid with PVP/PVE gear (but you need to be 80 to participate and be in a raid group - so I can't tell that since I am 75). After conquering or defending the fortress the faction that controlled the zone has 2.5 hours time to profit from these advantages.

It is a first for Wow, is new and a very welcome addition to the PvP.

Indeed it is EU. Perhaps US guys can give good alternatives for great PvP servers in the US. But I think in a few days time, even on PVE servers this zone will be very active (due to the level 80's coming home).

For EU there is also Stormscale (I believe Athene is playing there).

so what you're saying is they have got rid of que'd battlegrounds, only to make open world battlegrounds, if it's one simple zone, it's the same thing without a wait.

very innovative.. not.. all they did was offer rewards for something that did not have rewards.  it should have been there at launch, don't try and trick people into thinking blizzard actually knows what they are doing lol.

I do believe he was referring to a play sandbox, as in a school yard, so stop drooling over yourself.

And by the way it is horde not hordes. Horde is plural by itself.

Good question. I did it to test my waiting time :))

I was already underway to Dragonblight on the flight path when I had the notice. I didn't enter.

Good thing to know is that the honour is very high in LW. Last time I had 1100 honour  for losing. Of course AV also had only  one BG open due to the fact people are still leveling as a first priority.

But since I am practically living in BG's with my characters (few Justicars), I can see the impact already. when players have a choice between doing solo daily, BG's, raids or LW.

Any new or returning player to WOW, send me a PM for some help getting started.

11/24/08 7:04:22 PM#17

My server has about 50alliance vs 35horde going on right now.   But again, I think my server must be slow, because the 'leveling' zones are still packed.  Most of my server isn't 80 yet and nobody is raiding.   Most of the people in lake wintergrasp are just exploring mostly.  There are a lot of questions in the general chat about how to create vehicles etc.

The addition of BoA items is a really neat idea.   I pvp almost exclusively on my frost mage.. now I'll have a reason to keep doign LW after I've fully decked him out.

To answer your question,  How does it differ from a BG.  The biggest answer is that it is persistent.  When one side wins, the zone stays there and there are other objectives you can do and just get ready for the next round (every 2.5hours).   Winning the zone also gives world-wide buffs.  The biggest is you get special drops from ALL instances.   I know my guild is going to do LW on our raid nights, just to make sure we get the extra drops.

Like I said, i'm a pretty low population server, which is pretty slow at leveling, and we are already seeing 50v50 battles.  I have no doubt it wil reach 100v100 in a few weeks.

The game gives a 'tenacity' buff to one side if it is greatly outnumbered.  When I did LW a few hours ago, our buff was pretty minimial even though we were outnumbered 35 to 50.    I think at this point it's hard to tell if the buff needs to be changed because a lot of people just don't know what to do yet.   A lot of people were running around trying to figure out stuff rather than fighting.

It's actually a very complicated zone.. much more complicated than warhammer keeps.   Having to build your vehicles (which have requirments) and then operate them manually is much more involved then Warhammer where you just run up and click on the seige weapons.

I say screw buffs and gear advantages, if  one  faction  is getting their ass kicked let it happen. Let them get more forces and then try it again.  Games need to rely more on skill rather than buffs to make things even.

If  50 people can defeat 100 people with no buffs and stuff , Id feel good about my self and my team. If that happens with buffs, Id feel like I cheated and I don't like that.   Just sounds like another crap idea that Blizzard has to make the game easier, IMO.

Ive never played the new expansion and I don't plan to. The game just keeps getting exponentially worse, IMHO.

But I guess 11+ Million like this kind of gameplay..... to each their own.

But that's just my personal preference, others will enjoy the more casual nature of this pvp I'm sure.

I agree and I can see that others like to have other kinds of PvP.  Each person has another perception of PvP I think. To each his own.

I know myself better now having tried AoC and War and while I am an enthousiastic PvP player, I don't think I would be interested in too much core PvP. I don't like the ganking, but it is there of course and I like to have different choices of play.

I think that MMORPG's do need a good balance between all kinds of plays. No one likes to die forever in a MMORPG.

Depending on the mood really.

Incredible innovative idea and a new addition to the already succesful system of PVE gear badges.

On a sidenote. I have 2 characters in War, one in Dark Crag and the other in Skull Throne.

Tonight there were tons of RvR, both realms had 100+ players in a specific zone (T3 and T4), only in 1 zone.

I can't remember I have had more fun in any MMO before.

Let me also remind you. I was in the top 3 High Warlords in WoW-Europe (Shadowmoon server, most people would know the name Xtort) when it was released. I am not a PvP-wannabe like Bodypass is.

I had to grind grind grind... compete with 15 other people to reach high warlord in 14 weeks and then my gear became obselete in a few months thanks to Blizzard. lol. And then they just removed that thing and introduced Arenas for even more grind.

When Mythic gives better rewards for RvR and motivate people to do RvR (gear, gold, renown, XP, buffs etc.) no other game will be comparable to WAR in terms of PvP/RvR fun. I am that certain.

The keyword in this post is set out in red.

Blizzard doesn't have jumping monkey like Jack Flash War Pauls to hype up features (that mostly aren't even in the game at the end).

Blizz let their players finding the new features for themselves and yes the moment you see these new mechanics and find out IN game, you're excited.

I've read about Bind on Account gear earlier, but seeing the vendors in front of your nose AND see that the system is even applied to PvP gear in LW is just great. I can see endless possibilities here.

Those who questioned the long life of Wintergrasp have their answer now. You will never run out of ideas and shards.

very innovative.. not.. all they did was offer rewards for something that did not have rewards.  it should have been there at launch, don't try and trick people into thinking blizzard actually knows what they are doing lol.

Millions of people seem to think so :) I'd say blizzard are doing a very good job at making money. Isnt that what a successful business does?
