What do you prefer, a linear game like Wow or a Sandbox game like the original SWG?

Linear or Sandbox

I just have to know what to do, so Linear for me
I got imagination myself, I love sandbox most
I cant make up my mind, a mix maybe?

sandbox - throw me out into a world where i am free to go off and carve my own niche and I will play that for a long time.

Heres a clue....  Sandbox games are no more different or entertaining than games like WoW..

I sort of like the linear games, but I like to be able to do a lot of stuff. I suppose that's why I still like WoW.

There's just so much to do. That's why it's so successful. The only thing I would like is a more open world. I love to explore and WoW allows me to do that to a certain extent, but the invisible walls just really irk me sometimes. I'd also like there to be some more variety. If you've seen one shop in SW...you've seen them all.

So I guess I perfer a mix of both linear and sandbox.

I voted for a mix of the two.

I want a sandbox world with chains of quests.

Why can't I have both?

I too voted for a mix. I love following a storyline, but I don't like being forced to continue with it if I just want to log on and do something random. A mix is definitely the way to go for me.

They should remake that game with a modern graphics engine but sadly Turbine seems to think that all you need these days is a strong IP.

The poll has some loaded language in it, implying that linear players like being told what to do and sandbox people have the imagination lacking by the linear players.

My take on it

I like how more linear games give you a reason to level your character/skills other than for levelings sake, but they often send you on rather pointless tasks that feel like busy work and leveling more than one character and you notice that the quests are the same for everyone and never change.

I like in sandbox type games how you can more freely roam and just dick around, but they do nothing to try to hide the fact that I am just repetedly killing, gathering or making things to level my character/skills and rely on you inventing some contrived reason to be killing boars and chit chatting to make the game fun.

I would like to see a game where there are fewer quests where you can make choices that branch off and are highly scripted, like a Bioware game, to get you aquainted with the different areas of the world.  Then add in the concept of more random events in the game, like a bandit attack or a famine or a bridge collapsed, so when I am dicking around in the game there are interesting things for me to do.

see the thing is... there will never be a truly great sandbox game..

gaming companies don't care about the imagination and thoughts in your head, they care about the cash in your wallet.

its as simple as that.

It's a false choice. SWG wasn't entirely sandbox and WoW isn't entirely linear. People need to get past the labels and look at what a game is.

Most people don't want deep games. Just look at non MMORPGS. Mindless shooters are the most popular, much more popular  than strategy games.

What has that got to do if its a sandbox or themepark?

You eather want it easy and guidance ingame and play themepark becouse its fun for you.

Or you play sandbox becouse you all wanne figure it out for yourself and is fun for you.

Is this simple enough or you still dont know difference between two and whats fun or not?

Its just what you prefer not whats more fun that other thats a matter of taste CAPICE or still  ?

Thats also not entirely true wow you can choose to ignore the quests or choose witch ones you do and lvl to 80 thats also freedom of choice or follow linear surten path its up to you.

WoW is themepark its not a 100%linear game.

But you still have some freedom to choose how you wanne lvl.

They did and MS fucked it up and players demonize it becouse it was to early released AC2.

AC players known long before that AC2 would never be same kind of game that AC was but cursed it for it

I'm not seeing any fundamental difference between what I said and what you said. All MMOs are theme parks, The only real differences are which themes and which rides. The rest is just window dressing. It's just a matter of hoping someone makes a combination you like and doesn't screw it up.

I choose Sandbox because I love myself some EVE Online / Fable / Elder scrolls / Fallout / GTA IV. Sandbox FTW. It's a total no brainer for me

i guess you can, if you really don't like leveling fast. the only way to level in WOW is by quests as any group exp or mob grinding isn't worth the trouble.

i wonder how long it would actually take someone to level to 70 (i know the new expac bumped the cap to 80) from just mob grinding. I would probably say double the amount of time it takes someone to do quests.

so really in WoW you don't have a choice, you do the thousands of bullcrap quests or you take forever to level. Quest grind or die!

I choose mix. I love wide open worlds but  I also love a great and epic storyline quest. Though I get the feeling that some people want sandbox FFAPVP and I would never go that route. Only game I ever enjoyed any form of pvp was in DAoC.
