There's a formula for everything, even famous quotes.

Yes, they use the same engine for all their games, this is why they were able to get art assets into their demo so quickly.

As for the graphics, I couldn't care less how cartoony they look. The visuals appeal only to the initial "wow factor" of the game, and when that wears off (by around the first week of playing), all that's left to explore is the underlying mechanics. If the mechanics are too simple, it becomes easily generalized and boring.

A lot of experienced / jaded gamers look past the graphics and are hopeful when reading about the game's features. This is because they know that good graphics =/= a good game.

So when it comes down to it, the visuals are just gravy; and not even the best gravy can cover the taste of shit-flavored gameplay.

Here's to hoping the smell of shit is not the first thing smelled when STO is open for beta.

I think the graphics look fine, the colors are a little cartoony but it doesnt look bad. Now if the combat animations are like vanguard it will be trash.  Eve was ugly I thought and I dont think it should be a standard for any space game. If you ever watch star trek you will notice that space is not ugly and bland but bright and vibrant. Their ships are perportional and not half designed like eve. Eve is small compared to alot of mmorph's I dont see why crytic would want to look at that game for anything.  Earth and beyond was better than Eve although it was lacking alot. My thoughts anyways

No idea what you're talking about.

EVE graphics is better, space more realistic and better looking, ships designed realisticaly and way more complex. From what i see from screenshots - it's only about half way to EVE's level.

EVE is small...I bet you won't see so many systems/regions etc in ST anyway or mechanics as complex as that of EVE.

Cartoonish looks are bad and engine looks old, but yes - game mechanics is more important anyway so if game is fun - it will do.

Anyway, the only thing ST can offer is some more intense quest/story part since EVE is all about mechanics and player-driven storyline.

Ok, the released graphics look unrefined and cartoonish. With that said, this game is only a little over 4 months into development! Look at the old alpha screen shots from EQ2, looked just like EQ. Look at the alpha shots from WoW, and it looks like a comic strip. Give the guys a break, we have a year till release. I look forward to seeing it in action around beta phase.

There's no evidence the graphics shown in the trailer in not final look, they said this is how you will play it.

Too Cartoony?

You can probably count that they at least will add more effects, like lightning shadows and so on, they are usually coming in late. But the general style will be the same, and I doubt that they will get better textures.

So it should look a bit better, but if you don't like the art style now, you ain't gonna like it at release either.

I'm no develper but isn't it better to have 'core' game that works flawless on as many systems as possible? Then when that's done start adding the flashy graphics in steps to match  the increasing processing power of people's computers.

They are numerous and heated because the same handful of people (including YOU warrior41/SAMEET) create a new thread on THE SAME TOPIC every time the discussion doesn't go their way.

I support you stating your opinion, dude, but I do NOT support trolling/spamming like an ADHD kiddie to garner attention. You're doing more harm to your cause than good by being a nuisance.

I don't know, it appears you came here to spam me. there is one poster who agrees with me, and made a very funny comment about Star Trek comic book adventures.

We will see how the reaction is to this thread.

One idiot like yourself agreed with you?

Although I definately wouldn't mine next-gen graphics, for me personally gameplay and content is what really keeps me going. Get that down right and I will keep on subbing. I don't mind changes, but never go in a direction swg has gone. They really screwed themselves over (sry for the language).

To me the whole process, the path from newbie to captain must be an adventerous one. That keeps me on the edge of my seat and keeps me playing for longer then 4 hours. The Customization imo must be very extensive and fun, upgrades to your ships etc etc. Those are very important things to me. Although next-gen graphics should be of this day and age imo, it should not go in the way AoC has done.

But enough examples were given in this thread why gameplay and content goes above everything else.
I hope Cryptic feels the same way :)

For the kids:

You can't have Hi Res Off line graphics technics in an MMO.

Certainly not in a fantasy MMO (too much loading to graphics cards fro HD).

For a space MMORPG I would opt for slightly higher graphics in space, but the character animations could be best Wow like (Wow as in the newest polygons used WotLK).

Fluid movement primes, not clunky laggy things like AoC or a bad engine with lag.

So graphics are quite up to what I expect form a GOOD game. Game play primes always.

I've changed my mind about the grahics.

I now think they are fine. This is an MMO after all and not a FPS. It if was a FPS, I would expect them to use the CryEngine2 or Unreal 3 engine, and that would be awesome.

But I expect graphics to be on the level of AoC or LOTRonline. That is good enough. Pushing the graphics would cause lag. And of course for me gameplay and content is more important.

The graphics both in space and on ground and within ships looks to be pretty good.

GRAPHICS ARE NOT A MAJOR ISSUE, ANYMORE.
