explaining to my friends that rush and king crimson are popular bands happened to be one of the hardest and most annoying  things I have ever had to do - I mean they should have known better. then listening to my friends version of who top tier and 2nd tier bands was one of the harshest things I have had to listen to.

"Dave Matthews Band is a 2nd tier band because they are not as popular as The Allman Brothers.. etc"

-DMB is not popular?!? you have to be kidding me

this all originated after an argument that began when I said "Rush is a second if not top tier band". We went through defining tiers based on both popularity and whether they revolutionized music (because he wanted to prove to me that Rush are nobodys - since he had never heard of them) and he disagreed with me on both levels of criteria for the tiers - after still not knowing anything about Rush.

Arguing music with my other friend is worse because he knew nothing about rock/pop until I introduced him to some bands in college. He plays the violin and knows lots about classical music. Anyways, when he pulls stupid remarks about rock/pop out of his ass, it still makes me cringe. Especially since he often ranks music on technical crap and really can't comprehend 'grungy' music being good...

So whenever I explain why I like music to people like this, I go with "it's aesthetically pleasing to me" and leave it at that. As far as I'm concerned, that's the best reason for liking any kind of music (or anything).

oh and DailyBuzz, since you like Alt-country I bet you would love this album (unless the distortion and jumble of a bunch of different sounds at once is too harsh for you... it is for some people... a lot of my favorite music is of the "dirtier" quality - I mean when they purposely (and thoughtfully) make it kinda rough around the edges)
