Persistant territory control? I only know of a few...
Thats all I can think of off the top of my head. (minus any F2P which many have some sort of territory control aspect dunno if any of them are any good though.)

Good list. I like MMORPGs where you can take over territory. I wish we would see an MMORPG where you can take over territory like you can in EVE, only on the ground instead of in Space. I played some WAR, and I can't say for everyone else, but for me it worked like this. You want to do open world RvR, but it needs to be organized. I wasn't that high level, and run to the open world RvR, but there's no one around.

Cited from freemmogamer.com Perfect World International - Territory Wars – Guilds can own territories and battle for their control. Weekly battles support up to 80 vs. 80 and winners receive a virtual monetary reward determined by the amount of territory occupied. Cited from fmmorpg.com Legend of Ares - Territorial War will be organized Nation vs. Nation events where players of each nation will fight for control of areas of the map. Each area will have their respective bonuses to bestow on the winning side in addition to increasing the size of the player's nation. Alot of quests and missions against a whole army vs a boss. Cited from forum.mmosite.com 4Story - Castles can be owned by a Guild from each Kingdoms through Siege Warfare that only one Guild, gained most points from RvR(Monday ~ Friday), can participate. Eve is only one with true territory control.
There are various games that have some kind of mechanic for fighting over and possibly assigning "control".
But Eve is the only one where you can actually control in non-contrived ways. Too bad its Excel Spreadsheets in space.
For example EvE is the only game where you can truiy lay seige to a system. And by lay seige I mean weaken an emplacement by denying it resources. An attacking force can conievably control all entry and exit points to a system and deny the ships in that system resupply and thus thier guns could run out of ammo and their point defense system could run out of fuel |

Shadowbane ... old game but free to play ... full pvp .. build and destroy citys ... controll terretory and fight for the reources .... and in opposide to eve you dont need to pay a few months ( and learn skills ... the time grind ) b4 you can take part in the big game --> max lvl char in a few days
problem is that its not mch populated anymore i think

Guildwars factions. Warhammer online. Still, I would love a mix between MMO and RTS, there is nothing like that right now. |

Regnum Online -- f2p Realm vs Realm MMO like DAoC. Open pvp takes place in the war zone where each of the 3 realms has a territory with 3 forts. The territories themselves don't change hands (movement is free), but the forts are attacked and taken.
There is an expansion coming up called "Invasions", where, once you take a Realm's 3 forts, you can invade their inner realm where normally enemy players can't go. |

There's Dofus Online... But that's a joke lol. It's web browser based rather than client based... It's a joke really :/ but it IS an MMO RTS. There's also Dream Lords but that isn't very good either. I'm sure you were thinking of something much much different though. lol "IRL is a pretty upstanding MMO with thousands of classes, a lot of PvP and even some pretty unique emotes and titles you can acquire. Explore that world first, then we'll talk about this virtual one." |

Already been mentioned but to reiterate, EVE Online, Planetside (yes people still play it), GW to some extent, WAR and WWIIOL are games with persistent, player controlled territory gained through PVP . |

Agree with both of these posts a lot. I love EVE but havent logged in for about 6 months because of real life and it doesnt suit casual gameplay. I thought WAR was the answer but it turns out to be nothing like it. EVE is the only game on the market where actually owning a system or a large part of space means something. I just wish they had another MMO like that but based on the ground as you stated above. Darkfall promises this and I think some of the other indies like Earthrise etc. PotBS doesnt have real territory ownership. No matter what you do it always resets. |

Missed this one
f2p Games: Starport and Perfect World. There are also other Asian games that have this feature although their names elude me atm.
p2p: EVE Online. But if you are good enough, you can get your subscription funded by other players |
