Are there any where you compete for territory?  Yes.

However, I don't know enough about those to tell you.  Sorry

Eve Online, most of the map is controled by player alliances.

Persistant territory control? I only know of a few...

  • WAR - but from what I hear, people are not doing all that much RvR which I find odd. Even the PCGamer review cited that. Community - flavor of the month type. As soon as something else releases they will flock away....wait, I think WotLK is pretty much doing that.
  • Lineage 2 - Fight for castle control which also gives town control and taxation benefits. Has a stagnate and slowly declining community.
  • EVE - Need a star system? Invade. Healthy sized and active community
  • Planetside - dunno how many people actually still play this. Looks like a dead game.
  • DAoC - again, pretty much a dead game.
  • Piratess of the Burning Sea - national factions fight for control of ports. I think this one pretty much was dead on arrival.

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head. (minus any F2P which many have some sort of territory control aspect dunno if any of them are any good though.)

Good list. I like MMORPGs where you can take over territory. I wish we would see an MMORPG where you can take over territory like you can in EVE, only on the ground instead of in Space.

I played some WAR, and I can't say for everyone else, but for me it worked like this. You want to do open world RvR, but it needs to be organized. I wasn't that high level, and run to the open world RvR, but there's no one around.

But with WAR you can do instanced RvR at any level. The game bumps up your stats so everyone can fight in instanced PvP scenarios. Well, with no one around in open world RvR, I just jumped into a scenario for some fun quick instanced PvP. But if everyone starts doing that, then no one is around in open world PvP, which means anyone trying it will find the area empty. So they jump into a scenario....

Eve is only one with true territory control.

There are various games that have some kind of mechanic for fighting over and possibly assigning "control".

But Eve is the only one where you can actually control in non-contrived ways.  Too bad its Excel Spreadsheets in space.

For example EvE is the only game where you can truiy lay seige to a system.  And by lay seige I mean weaken an emplacement by denying it resources.  An attacking force can conievably control all entry and exit points to a system and deny the ships in that system resupply and thus thier guns could run out of ammo and their point defense system could run out of fuel

Shadowbane

... old game  but free to play

... full pvp

.. build and destroy citys

... controll terretory and fight for the reources

.... and in opposide to eve you dont need to pay a few months ( and learn skills  ... the time grind ) b4 you can take part in the big game --> max lvl char in a few days

problem is that its not mch populated anymore i think

Click on the link in my sig.  Earthrise's raison d'être is the territorial conquer system.  Not only can you conquer territory but you can take it from other guilds, mine precious resources out of it, build on it, et cetera.

Beta begins before the end of the year.

Guildwars factions.

Warhammer online.

Still, I would love a mix between MMO and RTS, there is nothing like that right now.

Regnum Online -- f2p Realm vs Realm MMO like DAoC.

Open pvp takes place in the war zone where each of the 3 realms has a territory with 3 forts.  The territories themselves don't change hands (movement is free), but the forts are attacked and taken.

There is an expansion coming up called "Invasions", where, once you take a Realm's 3 forts, you can invade their inner realm where normally enemy players can't go.

There's Dofus Online... But that's a joke lol. It's web browser based rather than client based... It's a joke really :/ but it IS an MMO RTS. There's also Dream Lords but that isn't very good either. I'm sure you were thinking of something much much different though. lol

Already been mentioned but to reiterate, EVE Online, Planetside (yes people still play it), GW to some extent, WAR and WWIIOL are games with persistent, player controlled territory gained through PVP .

Agree with both of these posts a lot.  I love EVE but havent logged in for about 6 months because of real life and it doesnt suit casual gameplay.  I thought WAR was the answer but it turns out to be nothing like it.  EVE is the only game on the market where actually owning a system or a large part of space means something.  I just wish they had another MMO like that but based on the ground as you stated above.  Darkfall promises this and I think some of the other indies like Earthrise etc.  PotBS doesnt have real territory ownership.  No matter what you do it always resets.

f2p Games:

Starport and Perfect World. There are also other Asian games that have this feature although their names elude me atm.

p2p:

EVE Online. But if you are good enough, you can get your subscription funded by other players

I have a question.

Whats the best free to play game with territory capture/whatever?

I would go and play eve online but apart from having to pay for it and i have no money i can only play free to play mmos.
