Its like the animatrix, takes place between batman begins and the dark knight. Each short story has a different anime artist with their own style. Some of the artist are from Ghost in the Shell. |

well, it might not be 'officially' anime by definition, but it looks oriental enough to be regarded as such by Western players. |

Well, it definitely is NOT anime, and the Asian "look" to it doesn't make it so. Incidentally, I'M a "western player" AND an art major, and I certainly do NOT think it is anime. As a matter of fact, I think it's actually a laughable comparison and I wholeheartedly agree with the OP. President of The Marvelously Meowhead Fan Club |

But something that is not easy for a gamer accustomed to western medieval concepts to grasp. The majority at least. |

I for one am looking forward to Aion. I can hardly stand the wait anymore It's a Jeep thing. . .

Actually, I'm not so sure you are correct (Art major or not) as I just did some checking and it seems that the term "Anime" encompasses quite a large pallete of styles. This is what Wikipedia has on the subject: |

I agree. I think some men are a bit intimidated by playing a male character that is the antithesis of what you might find in a Conan Novel. Add to that a few cutsey characters, some wild color pallets and a lot of ornamentation and I think you will find many who just can't stand it. |

I have to say that the whole look of this game really puts me off.
I saw the character creation video on YouTube and I thought it looked like anime.
when you click the character and the give a little yell and 'schwooom' sound effect as they punch the air.
It's not for everyone. |

You are actually correct. I should have used the term "manga" instead of anime, because that is the TYPE of anime that Westerners are most used to seeing on television, etc. Good catch! But, even with all the STYLES of anime......I still say that the artwork in Aion, does NOT appear to be anime to ME, at least. :) President of The Marvelously Meowhead Fan Club |

I find it a little unsettling that some people would feel violated by feminine looking men. Perhaps a little insecurity?

My sense is that it borrows from Anime style. Some of the hair styles for example. The Cutsey shugo for instance. There is also another influence there as everything seems to be hewn from rock. The weapons, some of the dragon ships. I think it's safe to say that nothing exists in a vacuum. Unless an artist is consciously trying to avoid a certain art style, we are going to see its influences. |

To put it simply - if in the character creator you make youself look anime - you will look anime. If you don't - you won't. Imagine that... ------------------------------

If someone doesn't want their character to look "girly", it's as simple as making your character the way you like instead of how others have made theirs, such as the ones shown in a lot of the videos. I also doubt that everyone is going to churn out that kind of character, but if someone does, that's their own business. I don't think that it's just the basic appearance of the characters, though, but also things like movement. Attack animations, emotes, etc. They do have a sort of asian inspired feel to them, I wouldn't dissagree there. If that's the big problem, then I wouldn't know what to tell you, because I doubt they'll change uppon NA/EU release. Honestly, though. Would it kill people to have more of an open mind about other cultures?
On a side note, the male Elyos dance emote is totally a white mans dance. |

They are sculped like normal Asian humans to the best extent. The color palets of course and the overly exadurated movements like punching the air is common among anime, but it is also common among sitcom and comedy's in the east, Also a little bit in the west as well. This game doesnt give ANYONE an "Anime feel" It gives them an "Eastern" feel. ANIME is not the root of the style, or anything for that matter. Most people just associate with anime, but they lack the ability to think deeper. Or bother trying.

Also a lot of people are saying the hair styles and body markings ect are crazy and ANIMEish. But http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGZRWq1-g6w This is somewhat normal in parts of the east. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZkbz1Z-3VIR This second vid shows some of the outrageous but somehwat normal styles in east. Also dance and movements. This stuff isnt based after anime people, Anime is based after it.

I can see why people would call this anime. i think technically it is, but it is not as pronounced as a lot of mainstream anime. I've seen anime that looks less anime like than aion does so I think in general people have different views of what anime is. There seems to be a stigma on anime. People probably don't want aion listed as anime like because people might just pass seeing the word anime. Shouldn't matter to you if someone is closed minded enough to not even look at the game, but a label. If it looks good to someone, who cares if it is called anime or not, heh. Some of the stuff in Last Exile had less of an anime feeling, but 1 that sticks out to me is Jin'roh or grave of the fireflies. There are many different styles of anime, some of which don't have the typical "anime" feel to it, so i don't think people are really wrong when they say aion gives them an anime feel. There are obviously influences there. I get less of an anime feel from aion mostly because it looks to have a blend of western and eastern to it. I quite like the look of aion actually. I'm just apprehensive on the gameplay. The vids of combat didn't really impress me. I'm not worried about the "grind" because MMOs in general are grinding, in one form or another. As long as it is fun, there is no "grind". It is just playing, hehe. |
