Seriously , it looks nothing like anime at all , in fact WoW is more anime than this game is. This game looks more like a upgraded graphics of original EQ/L2 it also has a resemblance to latter versions of the final fantasy series which are just gorgeous. The OBT trailer is a perfect example of how this game bears little to no resemblance to anime. www.aiononline.com/us/media/video/video.html

I  think its more to do with the way characters are represented and some of the creatures in the game.

Basically its not gritty and grim like western MMOs.

But yeah, calling it anime is wrong.

I think people are confusing Final Fantasy's style with Anime. For some reason in video games if its not gritty, with slow paced combat, it gets called anime.

Here is a pic of Aion

Here is a pic of what an anime would look like if it was created into an mmorpg ( Famous anime series , DBZ )

Note the huge difference in styles.

I loathe anime in all its various forms (I've never figured out why) but Aion doesn't look too bad. It reminds me a bit of GW and I quite liked that art style.

I like some anime too, but i wouldnt call it "anime style" The style is similar to GuildWars, "Because of NCsoft"  which is in no way Anime style, And the character models look more "Asian human" than "Anime human".  The way that spells and creatures look ect, are all just bi-products of asian lore & mythology, which all share somewhat similar ties whether it be korea, asia, Japan, or china, even taiwan. The Mythlore is similar. But that doesnt make it anime. It does however, always have a tendancy to seem "Similar to an anime" :Now why is that? Well... Because Anime is animated show alterations of popular drama/normal TV/Action shows involving there mythlore or history, It is based off the culture. Same with Aion, But that does not mean it is anime. That is like saying asian news broadcasting is anime because they talked about a dragon festivle.

Its kind of like how everyone calls WoW cartoony, But it in fact is not a "Cartoon" it just looks cartoonish, and has nothing to do with a cartoon show. Similar to Aion, but i believe even less so in Aions case, because it doesnt look nearly as much like an "Anime" as other "ANIME MMO's" Going around. Trust me, some of these MMO's are (AAAAAANNNNNIIIIIMMEEEEE)... Take for instance hello kitty online, Mabinogi, Scions of fate, and various others are extremely Anime'ish.

It dont think it would be to extreme for someone to say Aion is one of the LEAST anime looking MMO's developed in parts of asia. BTW, I hate those stupid looking gofer people and i will make sure to align myself on the rgiht faction jus to extinguish whatever gofer romance they have goin on.

Some people only talk sh!t online. I'll talk sh!t online and i'll say it to your face.

I always thought it was something a step higher to anime. Make an anime 3D, make it look REALLY good because 3D animes just look horrible in my opinion, and actually make the characters look asian. I like anime to a degree, but one thing that pissed me off is when anime artists make a character, then they say he/she is Japanese, yet their character would obviously look western.  You just can't deny the fact that people with asian decent have one type of eyes and that westerners have another type of eyes.

Anyhow, the Aion's graphics... A+

I've always wondered why so many Japanese artists make their characters look caucasian. Like cloud in ff7 , he was clearly caucasian and then in the movie Advent Children they made him asian O_O since most of their fan base is asian.

Anime in the western mind is a very generic and sweeping label.

You're going to hate me for saying this, but Aion does in fact look anime. Mind you it looks anime to anyone who doesn't watch or like anime. It's just that the eastern style is very apparent, and you can't deny that it is apparent in Aion.

So while it doesn't qualify as 'anime' to those of us who love anime, it will to many of the western market. Guild Wars also looks 'anime' to those people.

In the end, who cares? We already know Aion's good looks and exagerated prettiness says nothing about the game itself, so why worry that some people won't like the art style? I'll never, ever like  WoW's style, or WAR's, I think Eq2's and Vanguard's models (meshes) are mostly horrid. And nothing you say will convinve me otherwise.

I think that Aion carries a sort of mature-anime style too it. It may not be "anime" too people of the East, but too us westies it is indead anime inspired graphics.

I personally love this style :D

I just hope the EXP table wont be insane hard like L][ D:

Its like the animatrix, takes place between batman begins and the dark knight.  Each short story has a different anime artist with their own style.  Some of the artist are from Ghost in the Shell.

well, it might not be 'officially' anime by definition, but it looks oriental enough to be regarded as such by Western players.

Well, it definitely is NOT anime, and the Asian "look" to it doesn't make it so.  Incidentally, I'M a "western player" AND an art major, and I certainly do NOT think it is anime.  As a matter of fact, I think it's actually a laughable comparison and I wholeheartedly agree with the OP.

After having played most major MMOs on the market, I am presently waiting to see what game developers will do with the genre. In the meantime, I have returned to EQ2 and single player RPGs. I support games of all genres. Every gamer should have a game they truly enjoy.

it has an oriental feel to it;  call it Final Fantasy style if you prefer. But something that is not easy for a gamer accustomed to western medieval concepts to grasp. The majority at least.
