Hmm....comparing an MMO to a non MMO  is like comparing apples to oranges imo.

I can tell something by reading this person's post though. They have never, ever programmed in their life. If they had they would understand how different the landscape is now than when WoW first started. Let's go over a few things about WoW.

1. WoW has been out around 4 years, and yet still has tons of glitches and security issues. Now after that long a game should be free of bugs. We buy a game in a video store, that has not been in development for 6 years, and we expect it to be free of bugs. During my first week of playing wow I consistently encountered bugs. When I asked about then, I got nothing. I have screen shots of enemies that were killed, yet they just stood there completely immune to damage. They wouldn't drop or count as a kill. Iron, and herbs, growing inside trees? That game had more bugs than a 20$ hooker.

2. The mechanics behind the game are subpar. The game hasn't brought anything new to the world. Their graphic engine is poorly made, the db is slow, and yes I could go on.

3. The use of spyware to spy on the people paying to play their game. WTF, who thought it would be cool to spy on the people paying you to play your game. If you are worried about cheating there are many more options available to a big buisness like blizzard.

4.  The community support, well there really isn't any community relations to speak of. Occasionally you have some person post on their forums in blue text about how they are going to change the game. Like it or not.

If I really need to keep on going I can. WoW is a horrible game, and it has subscriptions because the choices available to people are:

a. Not well known to the average user. This is a big company that pulled in many blizzard fans. They have the money to run commercials often and put up tons of advertisement.

b. Not as simple as familiar as WoW in some aspects. People get used to a certain aspect from rpg games. Then that translates over to what they expect from mmorpgs. They expect the grind up to a high level with huge numbers flying around.

Sure you can put down Warhammer, but that game hasn't been released for 2 months yet. According to Electronic Arts, WAR has sold 1.2 million copies and has 800,000 registered users as of September 30, 2008. ^http://news.ea.com/portal/site/ea/index.jsp?ndmViewId=news_view&ndmConfigId=1012492&newsId=20081030006325&newsLang=en

I think games like Stargate:Worlds, and Knights of the Old Republic are going to put that final nail in WoW's coffin. If you want just look at the planned expansion content. They are already copying from Warhammer, just like they copied most of their content from other companies.

Posters like Tenetke should be banned from these forums if mmorpg.com should keep any credibility for supporting MMORPG's at all.

The problem is that such posts just invent things to put down very good developped MMO's and lay a smoke screen of fantasies, lies and ....  excuse me of the term "vomit" over games which are considered a reference of MMORPG play these days.

The reason we get underdevelopped and unpolished games can be found in the attitude of such fellows.

Of course their atttitude doesn't influence much the total MMORPG community, but it is just sad to see these posters pop up without moderator control on MMORPG.COM at all.

Personally i tend to agree with Tenetke, off how you say  people like him should be banned from posting....

What is with wow players being so damn sensitive about their game, its old and no, it doesnt appeal to everyone.  You guys got enough players, why try to silence those who didnt see the game the same way you did?

Im not saying wow is crap, im saying its about a good as a lot of other games, only i think it did a better job pulling coulsol players into the market, which is why it has so many subscribers (oh and they count like 7mil asian subscribers in their 10mil number, most of those accounts are active for life since they pay as they play not by monthly subscription....i think wow is still the highest populated game, but not as populated as their 10mil subscribers implies)

i just think its kind of ironic that when someone examines WOW under the same intense scrutiny that wow players put all other games under, the wow players get all riled up like were all being unfair.

Look for the red and then they always conclude with the green.

Actually the blue is always the best part, because that coffin is already ordered how many times now by this guy and his alts?

As for the yellow text: WotLK is being worked on for 2 years.

Sorry but these kind of posts are unfunded hate posts and don't serve the image on MMORPG.COM well.

I don't even defend Wow. I just show how hate can take over a man's senses.

From the OP's attitude and finger waving i really hope WOW lasts for 15 more years.

I'd like to keep all these types in the same place so communities of  titles I enjoy aren't contaminated.

It always baffles me when someone who doesn't want a WoW-clone waits for an indie developer to come up with "something completely different" and off the wall. How is that going to happen?

It is like a paradox, you can't beat WoW by being the same as WoW because why not just play WoW which won't close down in X years. But to make "something completely different" likely means that this game is nowhere near the quality level of WoW and is more risky and therefore less likely to be supported.

Exactly what game is everyone waiting for to surpass WoW, it is not going to happen. Even EA and Games Wokshop with multi-million budget couldn't even get 10% of WoW's number. Does everyone think there will be a sleeper hit from an indie developer that has fresh ideas or is a new concept or does something really cool.

"Oh yeah EQ2 will beat WoW" (1 month before both games released) These forums were littered with WoW vs EQ2 threads months before and after both games come out.

Let's try sci-fi yeah cos that work out well for EnB, Tabula Rasa and HG:L and Auto Assault..

"WoW vs AoC" - lolz

"WAR is coming" WAR came and went.

It doesn't matter what game you compare WoW with. WoW will always be on top I predict for at least 10 years. It now has 11 million subscribers and has been out for nearly 4 years and to suggest that its population will shrink enough for another MMO to usurp it is ridiculous.

Whatever game anyone suggests I will laugh at like some megolomaniacal James Bond baddie. You may as well just play WoW.

{ Mod Edit }

I played wow for about 1 month and to me it was the same as all the mmos out there but with better graphics.  I am just waiting on darkfall .

Actually I got 2 mmorpg's that beat WoW, EvE online and Ryzom, thats all I really need.

Oh and yah I had put Ryzom on hold to try out WAR, but they screwed up with their feckin scenarios ... so Ryzom here I come again :p ( And some EvE online in between prolly )

You can compare WoW to Ryzom and EvE online like you can compare Monopoly to Settlers of Catan and Power Grid, everyone knows and plays Monopoly ( WoW ), but real gamers play Settlers of Catan, Power Grid, Agricola, Puerto Rico, ... ( Eve Online, Ryzom )  :p

WoW is really only mediocre game even when not taking in account of the graphic/graphic design.  However, its popularity made the online environment more vibrant as there are more players.  This doesn't really say anything about how good the game is, only how many fans of blizzard/warcraft are out there.

Popularity is infectious, but each person need to decide whether a game is fun or not.  Saying something is fun just simply because you played it doesn't mean it is a truth of the universe.  Truth is based on perception.

And people wonder why WoW gets so much hate...

Great, your game is played by 40 billion asians, that's awasome.  Now, go play and quit trying to cram it down everyones throat.  I've never played WoW...I never will play WoW...lets move on.

Hey peps...

Ye it's kinda like that, the game who bet wow is outhere alredy, i can give you many examples !

For those who left WoW to play Aoc and didn't came back to wow, their wow beater was AoC.

For those who left WoW to play War and Didn0t came back to Wow... same story...

For those who left Wow to play LoTRO and didn't came back... same story...

The Wow beaters are out there! it's just eatch person has it's own and I have mine

Seriously memorise this: People don't want a wow beater, they just want a game who looks like with what they are looking for, a game where they can have real FuN! There is plenty of mmorpgs out there and from the list of Released games out here in mmorpg World of Warcraft is just 1 in 39 (2,5%) of the total mmorpgs in here without counting with those who are in Development ;D!

There is nothing more to say.

Regards

WoW  will die.  You have to think, 11 million subs, yeah that's impressive and has never been done, but as many have said, WoW is getting older.  I don't think that WoW will have the dedication of games like EQ1 where you still have people paying to play that game and it is pushing 10 years old.  WoW does have alot of appeal to it, mainly to a casual crew though.  Who knows, maybe that's how they'll survive, with casual appeal.  Short of Naxx, there was really no hardcore objective of WoW.

I am sure I'm not the only one who is sick to death of a person assuming his/her opinion supersedes all others simply because of subscription numbers.

By this broken logic: Microsoft is the perfect god of all system software, all fast food chains but Mcdonald's should immediately close down, all religions and faiths are false except for the Roman Catholic Church, China and India are the best places in the world to live...

I could go on, but I think you get the point.

I don't give a damn what you think is enjoyable, but don't come to me and insinuate that I am stupid, deluded, foolish, etc. for having my own opinion, just because a lot of people disagree with me.

Not playing MMOs, and hating every minute of it.
