Get psyched for Darkfall. |

Uh, Hello McFly... Darkfall is fully open PvP, EVERYWHERE. That makes a game experience so much different from the original EQ that I can't even begin to imagine what the hell you are even talking about. ... I'll try it I'm sure, until the first time I am ganked with no reason by a 14 year old who has 10 times as much time to play as I do.

Good thing the 14y/o will have a second account to which to go when he's not using his main account. :D |

Holy crap another idiot DF fanboi, now trying to compare it to the mother of raiding games. I bet the next stop is Hello Kitty. |

Apparently some of you johnny play EQ late comers didn't realize that EQ had both open PvP servers and faction PvP servers back in the day as well. PvP aside though, the comparison is that of an open non instanced world, yes believe it or not, EQ had zero instancing during it's first 4 years. A game with realism and a harsh meaningful death penalty, something I realize has been watered down in EQ's current form but as the title states, I am comparing with classic EQ. A game that is combat experience driven, as EQ was and still is I believe, unlike most of the current games which are boring linear task experience oriented. A game with a good crafting system, something EQ also had. Darkfall has a lot in common with classic EQ and those of us who miss the old EQ and reject the crap it has become will enjoy Darkfall.

If they do nothing and the ganking runs rampant, I'm sure they already know what the consequences will be, so no doubt they've worked something out by now. I would bet money the ganking won't be any worse than in EVE. |

I don't see the connection to EQ and Darkfall, and i'd like to think Darkfall will be in a class of its own if it is feature complete at release. |

LOL EQ is mapped in zones... not very "open world", all someone would have to do is zone out. - Air |

Originally posted by Airdefier I never implied that all mechanics were exactly alike. This quote is from the Darkfall website as to where from their design was inspired: What do you mean by next generation? UO, EQ, and AC were representative of the old school, realism, harsh death penalty, combat experience oriented, open world in terms of freedom, type of game design, and Darkfall is building on that foundation. |

I totally miss old EQ, ( I had a 66 monk on Ayonae Ro and quit when GoD came out.) I wish they would have stopped at Luclin or PoP and just released patches to upgrade those places, instead of just making more and more new zones, and leaving the old ones to be abandoned. I recently went back to EQ for like a month and made a bard on Stromm server, all the old newbie zones are abandoned, and there really isnt a reason to visit it either. I understand everyone is high level and raiding the new content, but they could have done something to make the older zones not so empty. I have a 70 shaman on WoW and it feels like its starting to follow the same path.
...but there is 11million people playing so you always run into people creating alts.

in fact it was EQ1 and from there the later games like AC and DAoC where of similar quality. Then came WoW which was a refreshing simplification but also a downgrade in terms of Depth freedom of playstyle and class choice. After WoW it went all the way downwards, because the thinking of developers was probably: IF WoW = simplification of EQ and others = SUCCESS THEN LOTRO (and others) = massive simplification of WoW + WORLD FAMOUSE LICENSE = MASSIVE SUCCESS. thank god this did not happen and LOTRO is just average success. Anyway, i will have a look at Darkfall too of course. |

Over-simplification = boredom, mindlessness, predictable gameplay.
Accessibility = success.
Freedom, though, and world immersion have been seriously suffering and lacking. Customization in a sophisticated, truly user-customized way, is also lacking if not absent.
The goal for the future ought to be combine freedom + accessibility + user-friendly customization + world immersion = success. |

I have to agree. While I like some points of Darkfall (realistic graphics, consequences for actions, etc...), I am neither a fan of PVP nor twitch game play. I imagine this game quickly becoming a strafing key-pounding gankfest, with noobs dropping out left and right as they realize hardcore PVP is not for them. Now, if Darkfall took a PVE approach, with serious AI, they might have something. Such a game, at the moment, is an unfilled niche.

You really got my hopes up. But then you ripped my heart right out of my chest, just ripped it out. Then you stepped on it while i watched, and on top of the dirt you spat, but that still wasn't enough. You took me to the soviet tundra, stripped me and cut off my feet at the knee. And I lay dying here while you continue to desecrate EQ. No but really I think Darkfall looks fun, not at all analogous to Everquest. I was expecting something like EVERQUEST CLASSIC SERVER FOR ALL THE OLD SUBSCRIBERS !!!! Because I would have cancled my plans for the next week (including thanksgiving) to make a character and grind crocodiles in Marr. Anyway if you see something like that make this thread again. Until then don't mess with my emotions :( |
