I severely doubt anyone would have heard of me here, probably not even if you played FlyFF lol, but I'm an ex-FlyFF player which means I can grind incessantly wihtout any personal gain.  But what I'd like to do is start on another game, however subscription games aren't really what I'd like to start with.

My question to you players is: what F2P or single-payment MMORPG should I play?

I was thinking of playing Guild Wars, but I'd like a 'professional' opinion lol, but yeah the opinion of players as they have the most honest opinions.  I'm sure you all have your own personal thoughts on what the best games are, and I would really like to read what you think.  But please don't just say things like 'PlAy eVERquEst menZZZZ!!!!1!', not only because the random caps format is hard to read, but because I'd like to know what makes the game fun.

The unique selling points of a game for me are:

  • Good community - I enjoy talking to other players, preferrably not the spoilt brat pre-teens I have been accustomed to on FlyFF
  • Gameplay - I don't want to just grind constantly, quests and party/guild events (raids, sieges etc) make the game more fun.
  • Fun for all levels - I want to be able to actually get a foothold in the game, so a non-f***ed-up economy would be nice.
  • Graphics/Sounds - Not really important, but a nice bonus.

Hopefully you can help me choose a new game to start up on, thanks in advance.

I would suggest Maple Story.  I myself just began it, but from what I've seen so far, alot of the "stress" of a normal MMO is not present:

Pros:

Level cap is 200, which = less exp to gain each level = quicker gratification

Game is 100% 2D, and is part cell-shaded part Anime = unique

Can buy game credits @ Target for in-game money

4,000,000 Players worldwide

Relatively low datagram size

Cons:

Character creation is very bare bones

Not very many classes to choose from

"Easy" only equals "better" for crack addicts and MMORPG developers.

I would say give Guildwars a whirl if you are already thinkin it may be one to try. It pretty much has everything you are looking for. I been finding most other F2P games just too grindy for my liking...n the P2P games aren't much better.

Definitely Guild Wars.

The community is probably its weakest point but if you are a little patient you will find some good people.

Gameplay is very good. You don't "grind" like other MMO's you follow missions that are all tied to a story. The PvP is very competitive and team driven although its just BG style "capture the flag".

Fun for all levels - again the missions take you through the 20 levels pretty quick. They are fast paced and challenging throughout. You can always PvP at any point if you get tired of doing the missions.

For its age, GW has great graphics and technical qualities. More MMOs need to adopt Arenanets style of great looking games that are fun to play and WORK at launch.

Games, above all else, are about fun. MMORPG's are no different. If you are not having fun, find something else to do with your time and money and stop your bitchin.

You don''t stop playing cos you get old; you get old cos you stop playing.

"Single-payment MMORPG" ya say?

Three possiblities:

1. The obvious - Guild Wars. It's the grand daddy of the one-payment MMORPG and what most people on this site will direct you towards. Community - ok, but may be quiet at the low-levels. As far as I know, not many people pick up the original Guild Wars off the shelves these days. Gameplay - All right but heavily instanced. Fun - For a bit. Graphics - OK. I didn't like the restrictive feel of the movement.

2. The much maligned - Hellgate London. For a free MMORPG it's a blast for a month or two. Community - Didn't speak to a single person during my month or so of playing. Gameplay - As mentioned it's a blast for a few weeks but repetitive tile sets and the same old same old feel gets, well, old and stale fairly quickly. Fun - Maybe for a week or two. Then you'll soon realise it's a "rinse and repeat" type of game. Graphics - Average.

3. The superb - Lifetime subscription to LOTRO. Ok, it's kind of a one-payment deal (on top of the price you pay at the counter) - only very expensive. Community - People will actually respond in a constructive, friendly way when you ask a question. I have never joined a kin but join and start groups easily. Gameplay - It's a sophisticated World of Warcraft. Fun - Not yer action-packed, in-yer-face, laugh-a-minute type fun; but yer "glass of quality wine sipped slowly and enjoyed with a lovingly prepared meal" kinda fun! Graphics - Beautiful, lush and varied environments. Stunning!

And the results are in:
1st Lord of the Rings Online.
2nd World of Warcraft.

Isn't Hellgate shutting down?

Personally I have a hard time recommending games that are getting the plug pulled.

Darkfall won't be free.

But..

If you want a F2P MMORPG.. I'd try AO.  Very steep learning curve.. nice graphics.  Only problem is that it's an old dying game.  The PvP is lacking (I've pvp'd in that game.. don't knwo how) but it's fun.

Or guildwars.  Like everyone said.. I played the Beta.. that's about it.. but it has like 4.1 or so million players.

Currently playing Real Life..

Ah, yes, I also would never have recommended this if I knew it was being shut down. Please accept my sincerest and most humble apologies.

Guildwars has a pretty decent community for being 'kinda' free.   Last time I played people were pretty civil in random areanas  the winning teams weren't 1337 and the losers weren't.

While you won't be having eloquent discussions you won't feel 'dirty' for hearing a few too many...

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

I played Darkfall. It's just an Asian Grinder with Western style artwork. Not really that fun.

Hmm, some interesting thoughts here thanks guys :>

I'm more interested in a game less fixated upon the point and click grind-fests, and more about working with other people/upgrading yourself etc.

Thanks for all you posts so far
