"DE: Right. But how we're communicating and approaching everything else very much does draw from the MMO tradition, the notable exception possibly being the visceral nature of combat, which is something that we always talk about. Our lead combat designer is Damion Schubert, who does a lot of talks at GDC, and that sort of thing."
"Very often, we talk about the fact that you shouldn't be comparing us to MMO combat. You should be comparing us to game combat. There are a lot of excuses for it, but there's no reason that combat should not be big and exciting and look like Star Wars. Outside of that, though, we play a lot of MMOs, and we love a lot of MMOs."
"As someone who has played MMOs but isn't an MMO guy, sometimes it seems to me that many of the individual elements of MMOs end up being less deep versions of elements from other games. The story might be completely adjunct, the combat is kind of static compared to what you'd get in a game that's actually about combat, and so on -- that they wouldn't hold up if they weren't in an MMO."
"DE: I think, across the board of the industry, you're going to see that changing. What we're seeing is a game genre that has been very expensive, trying to do something that's so big. For example, will the helicopter flying in Grand Theft Auto ever be as good as in the Apache [flight sim]? (laughs) Right. DE: Right? Like, when you try to do more, your system gets less [capable]. Absolutely. But as the market grows, and one of the great things we've seen is new MMOs very often are expanding the market. They are not cannibalizing other games. The market is much larger than we think it is. More people are come online, and more people are playing these games, more people are interested in them. I think what we'll actually start seeing is the bar rising in all of these departments, because it only takes one game to come out and do great online combat for people to say, "Oh, well, I'm not putting up with that anymore."

well I got a lot out of this article, one thing important to note is that there won't be any RPG style combat in the game? So is it safe to assume it will be based more on action style game format? I'm not gonna think SWG NGE because that is a really poor combat form, yet I doubt it will be purely First Person combat either. If done right it could be fun I guess.

I hope it will be a mix of TFU/Assassins Creed/Mass Effect style combat. |

To be honest, I think that the genre is going to need to start finding new styles of combat for MMOs. The majority of these new MMOs have the idea down (like AoC or TCOS) but they don't seem to know how to properly implement them.

could mean a new and exciting style of gameplay, could just mean you go around walloping ppl with a lightsabre, won't be able to tell until it actually gets tried and tested by players |

I am all for it! Tbh, I am quite tired of the semi-turn based classed combat. Click, wait for animation to turn, and there is no impact at all. The AoC combat was really a good start in the right direction, and I had feared action combat would be too difficult for me, but it wasnt. I would not want Super Mario jump and run combat. Personally I found the combat of Jedi Academy quite good, actiona and yet not so complicated that old timers like me cant follow it up. Personally TFU was a bit too fast paced and too much realiant on the gamers skill. I want a certain part of it is still based on the CHARACTERS skill and not entirely like games as Soul Calibur or what. A good mix of both would be cool. |

LOL. This is a great necro. Awesome to look back at what was being said and the reality of it.
(p.s. if someone actually opened this up looking for a game that actually has action-style combat, try DCUO - the combat system is great.) Dear BioWare, I'd like to direct your attention to ArenaNet. That is all. Best of luck. |

Wow, I remember all the threads when SWTOR came out stating that Bioware lived up to all their promises. I guess those people must have had a short memory :/. Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob? |

Originally posted by arieste Yea but the combat in GW 2 is action orientated I mean it isn't based off looks, having played it, yes it's action oreintated. Just figured I'd help you out :/. Oh and I mean videos I guess don't prove much but when it's in game footages of PVP and what not it's just obvious :/ Hope that clear things up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ns-IIn-DG-c Try to argue this please. Oh also if you quote me and it's to argue my point, if I don't respond it means I haven't been corrected by you and/or I haven't seen it. Remember I don't mind admitting I am in the wrong. Take care :D |

Hey now, TOR did have pretty action packed combat the first 6-7 levels or so. You know, when all you were fighting were groups of 3-4 weak mobs that would die in a couple of hits? That + no auto attack made the combat feel really fast paced and action packed.... Too bad shortly after that and for the rest of the game combat slowed down to a chore of frustrating health pool swapping. MMO History: |

My spacebar hadn't seen such intense action since the factory stress testing. I have to give BW some credit here. |
