The only MMOs I played at launch were:

AO, EQ2, DDO, AoC.

Of those 4, AO was the worst, AoC was a very close second, followed by DDO then EQ2. And have played a decent cross section of other MMOs (but not at launch). I just find it odd that the two worst MMO launches that I personaly experienced were both Funcom games. I must give them a little slack on AO though, since they were still a very inexperienced company, but AoC proved they didn't learn a thing.

I just quit last week after sticking it out for 5 months. Several key factors weighed in that. As a guild master in order to keep a guild growing, I had to invite over 2400 players. Our guild peaked about 2 months ago at just under 700 players, toward the end I was dismissing players for inactivity (30 days of non-logging activity) at a rate of about 5 dismissals to 1 new recruit. When I quit there were 175 players on the roster, and perhaps 100 of them active. The server itself had less than 3000 active players so I ask players considering playing or resubbing. Why?

AOC has also failed to deliver in 5 months

PVP

Recenlty was given incentive for killing players within 5-10 levels,  Still missing a penalty for kiling noobs or Kiling the same player over and over and over and over and over again. The reason why about 1/2 quit the game in the first place.

DX10

Its on the box, it should be in the game. It is not. The game looks great in DX9, a slight majority of computer users left, are using Vista, because memory management isn't a problem for them when they have 4 gigs of ram. Generally if you can afford Vista, and 4 gigs of ram, you also have a kick ass graphic card, one designed with DX10 in mind, which is why so many players including myself feel like playing on DX if we are paying monthly for it, which we motherfucking have been for 5 months!

Flexible Guild Management

Create a guild, give any player the right to invite or the right to access the bank, you must also grant them the ability to kick players. No develop a vendetta with other players, in a game which encouraged griefing to the extreme, once that player has the ability, they can kick every single member of your guild. I started a guild on Tyranny just to see how long it would take. Took 2 weeks. Is it a problem? Yes. Has Funcom addressed it No? Expected ETA on fixes for this? 2009-2010.

Class Balance

Classes have been broken, nerfed, boosted, tarded, fucked up sideways and some have been fixed. This is impossible to achieve with some many different classes and a constantly fluctuating game mechanics  but they should be doing a better job at the tweaking. If they had groups and raids working, it would matter less than it does, but since they have bascially made AOC a single player game in many respects and the incentive to group is almost nil, it is a problem magnified.

Fully Functional Raids

Broken, borked, so little reward for some much effort/time/cost/still broken. Never participated in them, just heard about how they suck, have been done better, and how they are still broken.

Functional Benefitical Groups

You can only invite up to 6 members, usually when you group xp per hour is lower than solo, somtimes when you group player or everybody only gets 1 XP. Fuck that. You should be able to scale XP so that everybody at most gets double what they would get if solo, and at least, what they would get the same per kill as soloing. This 1 xp bs is, BS! Being in, or a member or participating in a group, Groups in general, are the primary function of multiplayer games. DUH! If they are broken, and they arey, this will drive players away.

Server Merges

We had at launch a population density too great for the servers, and slowing players ability to level via grinding. Since a greater percentage of the game was grinding early on, it sucked. Then they expanded servers, then they added new quests, dozens, hundreds of them. No longer does a player have to grind. We have fewer than 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, or 1/6 of the player base depending on who you ask. There is a reason there is a new game director, not because AOC was such a smashing success but because it has been such a dismal failure. If you only measure subscriptions and nothing else the game went from 800k to 415k, they wont tell us where it is now, but Iv'e been playing for 5 months, and I know its certainly between 100k and 250k. Many servers have under 50 players online for more than 12 hours of the day. Thats superweaksauce as you kiddies call it.

Players are also logging on for shorter lengths of time. Why? It is not summer anymore, its school, weekends still see surges, but with a lot of things aready explored in AOC, and very little new for players to get excited about they don't log in at the same rate or length of time.

Conclusions

AOC is not desitined for failure. But unless they get their act together at funcom and get patches out, and regular consistent patches, hotfixes, and move it, they will fail, this game will die, the demand for it is already so low based on what they have done and not done thus far, very few will trust them on an expansion. Certainly I'll never buy a good or service from Funcom again until I know what the real scoop is, and not for about 2-3 months after release. What they did to players, gamers, consumers, was a shame. They knew they could pull it off with reviewers because it is so easy to put up the flashy graphics and show a few new things, and granted the combat system is something new. But everything else they have done smells of half-ass, C- grade stuff.

Never again... I have never felt so bad treated by a firm as i did with Funcom..

Bad costumer service, half finnished game, and i felt we were just being lied to, all the way. If people knew the situation from the start, there wouldnt be any reason to be mad, or sad..

Instead, thay acted like everything was fly... Gave os the coolest 1-20 level experience i have seen in ages, rest of the content was Beta all the way.. Nothing really worked ( for my experience that is ) The PvP i joined the game for, wasn't even implented yet..

And well.. Playing that manny hours a week that i do, i need a mmorpg that is solid, with a firm/costumer service, i can count on.. And Age of Conan & Funcom failed from the very start.

So, no thank you.. I threw this game out when i cancelled my subs.. Never to return again, but i understand if anyone else wanna give it another try... thay had alot of stuff that would make a kickass game if it just worked.

The question for me would be would I have fun, probably. Unless deathwhisper has taken another plunge in the numbers department, that's my worry. This is information that's hard to come by ( there aren't enough current subscribers here to post about such information.) If you check the server forums all you get as replies are arguments over whether tyranny or deathwhisper is the single populated PVP server.

Isn't SGW - Stargate worlds? a game that hasn't released yet? - Edit just realised it was likely a typo for SWG, SWG is concidered by many to be one of the best mmo's ever till they ruined it. It had many flaws certainly but their city and crafting system were amazing and it's very very sad to me that no other mmo has followed their footsteps in these areas. aoc's city's and aoc's crafting are pretty much the worst implmentation of either in any mmo.

WoW had many problems at launch but had much more longetivity than AoC.

Vanguard yep this game was slightly worse than AoC and because of that the game is pretty much dead, aoc has followed alot in vangards footsteps unfortunatly.

Currently AOC is struggling to keep 50 people online per server.  In the MMO industry thats a big fail.

The problems with AOC are the core of the game, it just doesn't play to the standard people expect (e.g. wow) and it's boring and half-arsed after level 20.

It's almost impossible to make a comeback with a failed MMO, people get fed up and move on.  If they manage it they will be the first.

3 weeks is not enough time to review AoC. Game changes a lot once you get to higher levels. I'll give it the same grade Eurogamer did in their recent re-review, 6/10.

It still needs a lot more content and fixes be be considered fun.

But if you belong to that 10% of gamers who like AoC the way it is, then I'm happy for you. Personally I found it boring.

Why are posts like this one not removed or actioned on the way saying something negative in a thread generates a WARNING? I mean this is obviously a viral marketing person.  He claimed to have bought the game the day he started posting but knew the history of its development and intricate details about that game that a NOOB could not have known.

I agree. I don't want to tell MMORPG how to do their job, but it seems to me like it's ok to post 20 over-positive posts every day, but if you post a couple of negative ones you will labeled as a troll, get a warning, banned or blacklisted. That is not fair and I hope MMORPG would change this policy.

PezzBomb is a good example of these over-positive people with some kind of agenda. If you read his post history you will find these redicilous posts about how perfect AoC is, when everyone who has ever played it, knows that is not the case. Not even after the recent patches.

If I posted similar posts but negative, I would be banned in less than a minute. It's not our fault we've had a very negative experience with FC and AoC. Why cannot we talk about these issues? Should I invent some positive threads just so that I don't seem like a troll?

I'm sure this post will disappear soon and you won't be hearing from me ever again. *sigh*

PezzBomb is a good example of these over-positive people with some kind of agenda. If you read his post history you will find these redicilous posts about how perfect AoC is, when everyone who has ever played it, knows that is not the case. Not even after the recent patches.

If I posted similar posts but negative, I would be banned in less than a minute.

Ironically, posters like PezzBomb do more damage to games with their over-the-top positive posts than critical posters do.  On a credibility scale extreme posters (positive or negative) have none.  The best we can do is not respond to posters like Pezzbomb.  Just responding to them gives their posts far more credibility than they deserve.  I really love the Block poster option on these forums.

The problems with AOC are the core of the game, it just doesn't play to the standard people expect (e.g. wow) and it's boring and half-arsed after level 20.

It's almost impossible to make a comeback with a failed MMO, people get fed up and move on.  If they manage it they will be the first.


 

you dont know what your talking about.  the server im on is packed with people.  and its not boring after level 20, i think tortage is the boring part.  the fun starts once you get out into hyboria

the game is being improved like all mmo's in the start out stage.  im not going to rehash what was wrong in the beginning cause we all know. 

and the community gets stronger and larger in number as you level.
