Hi there, was just thinking about the MMOs i ve played lately with my wife and everytime we get the oh well we gave that game a shot feeling. Not going to mention any of the games, that will only start a fight. What i want to know is i played AOC awhile ago, and well was bored silly. Has it improved, can i get immersed in the world, and does it still feel lonely if unguilded. My wife and I mainly duo but we like to group from time to time as well. We just really don t want to go back to WOW :( Anyways anything else people would like to add is appreciated.

well i have heard that aoc has been improving steadily but if you need a new game that is out right now i would suggest warhammer.  imho it is alot of fun but if it doesnt fit your play style i would tell you to wait for aion, darkfall or huxely

Check out Ryzom. Its currently free and has a great community.  Ive found an adult group of folks to guild with and they are so helpful and just all about having a good time.

Soki,

Many people and some independent sites report that initial issues with stability and performance since launch have been largely resolved. Of course that doesn't mean your system won't have issues, but if those items were a factor then it may be worth a visit again.

In so far as content is concerned, there has been some content added and there are future plans to add more content in the near future.

As for the "been there, done that feeling", I've been through that feeling a few times now when I look back at the MMO's I've played and looking at what elements I liked in those MMO's. If I'm not immediately engaged and/or feel a sense of progression as I move through the game world; then I tend to not to stay overly long in an MMO. I think it comes from having experienced MANY mmorpgs over the years; and as a result seeing a lot of the same themes; just with a different skin and focus on different elements.

I stopped looking for that "it" factor since the days of UO and EQ (and before that, text MUDS); as I recognize that I'm looking for something (first and second loves) that I likely won't come across again anytime soon; due largely to having experienced this medium for as long as I have.

With that said, if you felt bored in AoC due to similar reasons or you just didn't connect with it at the time; not too much has changed as far as content is concerned; but again its worth your while to read the upcoming 3.0 details to see if the existing content changes in there catch your eye.

I'd recommend taking a look at some of the free to play and some of the older MMOs on the market if you have time. There's some really neat free MMOs put out there, some deep and involving and others just quirky and fun.  On the pay to play side, I'm fond of DDO online (great for 2 people to jump in for a while and back out without hassle). The character development is deep and complex, an easy grouping system, voice chat and a rich world. Thelanis and Sarlona are active servers, with Thelanis being a litle more relaxed in community and character builds.

It has a 10 day trial, plus 14.95 if you want to subscribe so 40 days of play for 14.95 is worth checking out in my book.

OP: If you played AoC before and it "bored you silly", without you being more specific on exactly what bored you about it, i can only assume that you won't enjoy it this time either.

Since launch they have:

  • fixed  about 95% of memory leaks/grey maps/crash-to-desktops: i havent had any of these in last month but i have heard that some people still get lag issues.  I haven't noticed any.
  • increased FPS across the board.
  • Added PvP levels/PvP gear
  • Fixed large majority of minor bugs/glitches/etc.
  • Made some optimizations to a few classes

Planned for next patch (aka: already on test live)

  • New Zone for level 55-65
  • 2nd half of PvP update- murderer mechanics (check forums for info)
  • Crafting changes/additions
  • Class fixes
  • Combat changes (see AoC forum for info)
  • minor bugs (quest text typos, etc)

In the future they plan to:

  • Add more higher level content
  • Crafting overhaul (general system revamp and addition of Culture armor/weaps)
  • Improve itemization
  • Add more variety to standard armor/weap appearance
  • Possible server merges/char xfers
  • Make stats more definitive and prevalent in day-to-day gameplay (ie: have more of an impact)
  • and more, etc, etc.

This is just an overview without going into too much detail about each item.  You can find general info on all of these on the official boards and testlive boards.

If you liked AoC before but just thought it had too many bugs/issues, then its a much better game now than it was.  But if you didnt like the combat, questing, pvp'ing, and general gameplay, then don't waste your time because the core game is the same, only now it has a bit more polish on it.

yeah polish will only enchance the core mechanics of the game and if you don't like that then you won't ever like the game. Games you may like

Rappelz, DDO, GW, WAR, WoW, and some not out yet.

Just my opinion, but most of the fixes just polished what was already there, and they added part of the PvP system.  There weren't any changes that made the game "feel" any different, at least not so far.

I also found the game pretty shallow and boring, but stuck it out to see if that would change.  It didn't, although the stability did get better.

In my estimation, the game still feels basically the same, but is more stable (the lag spikes are still there, though).

What type of game are you interested in primarily?  PvE?  PvP?  Something that supports RP well?  Casual-friendly?
