I have to say that imho lotro has the 2nd worst avatars for a A grade mmo, D&D online having the worst..,mmm now isnt that a strange thing.
of the 8 of us in my gaming group who tried to like lotro only one got beyond 30 before something about the game drove them away, for me and several others it was characters, just dull, drab, disjointed and made to look crapy compaired to the world.
could not push on beyond the mid 20's the game play wasnt that interesting, combat wasnt good and avatar/spell actions were dull.
but climbing weathertop and looking out across the misty vale and seeing the forested hills was cool.
for the record most of us ran it on direct x 10 made for nice shadows of leaves and made the avatars stand out worse against the vibrant background..
the avatars remind me of an old painting, covered in dust and faded with age and neglect, you have a feeling there is a masterpiece of painting under all the layers of grime if only someone had thought to give it a good clean and restoration...

No, disagree with you. I can't see what all the fuss is about VG models, I think they're ugly and downright weird looking, all Lego hair, starey eyes and out-of-whack limbs. LoTRO's character models are a bit of a let down, particularly when they run - my female champion looks like she's dropped a load in her knickers and she's running for the can - but VG character models are awful...
Edit - did want to agree with poster above though, the LoTRO avatars do look like an old painting - that's exactly right - like there's a layer of dust on them that make them look dull against the wonderful landscapes. Someone else said that they appeared to have been Photshopped in - an effect which is particularly noticeable on screenshots - and I agree with that too. They look like photos that have been tampered with. |

It seems someone launched a new thing to spit on... : "omg! lotro's characters looks horrible!" If you don't like them then don't play the game and leave, but let other people who wanna try the game, because you all give them wrong information! lotro is a good game. and after being in lotro for a while now, I can say 1 thing: The characters models do not look horrible, they are fine to me ------------------------------------------------------------------- |

i've played lotro since beta, still play it today and am a founder. and i will tell you straight up, lotro's character models and armor are some of the most ignorant dumb looking peices of garbage ever invented. the artists should be fired in the character department. that being said, lotro's world is one of the best looking worlds in design and graphically, i think it's graphically better than conan, the only thing conan has going for it is better character models. i'm highly judgemental though, been playing mmo's since Ultima Online beta 2.

i think wow's character models are better than most games character models, people may not be a fan of the cartoon like graphics, but the models themselves are far superior to 95% of all games.
people can hate on wow all they want, the fact is is that it's a top notch game programming / graphically and in the fun department ;p i think people just have resentment towards it because of how hard it is to attain any gear that is nice lol |

In response to another poster a couple of posts up, I don't think we're knocking the game here, I love it and have already pre-ordered Mines of Moria, but I do agree that the look of the chars is one of the weaker aspects of the game. |

I would have to agree, and it seems to be a heavy consensus. It has been on my list of complaints for this game. There was discussion of reworking the models at one point, but that never came to fruition. I wish they would use the skeletal systems from D&D online, which seem to move and look better overall. But, no, know we see even mobs are being ignored in LOTRO (anyone seen the pink brain creature from Moria? That is a joke) Sad really. This game has a lot to like, yet has a list of so many issues to not recommend it either.

Honestly, the armour is great. Crappy armour in the beginning, nice 'n shiny armour at lvl 40-50. Either you haven't played till lvl 40-50, or you just didn't pay attention, there's some great armour in lotro. The animation however... As a burglar, I must say my animations are... wrong. You hit something, damage gets dealt 0.5s later. Or your target suddenly dies, without you even hit it. Well, that's the same really, but just feels so wrong. Running has decent animations though... Untill you start jumping. Really, they're missing a few.. 20 frames of the animation, it jumps up, freezes, falls down.
BTW; The landscapes are rarely done by the same people who do concept art. Saw a few people here thinking that. Concept art is always way more detailed than in-game graphics, pretty normal too. Believe me, it might sound easy to get good terrains, but you quickly loose performance, so people would start complaining about the massive amounts of memory it takes. ;) You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up. |

I love the way my character looks , and I can tell you im very picky in character aesthetics . The look is pretty unique from other games, but it is truly something to admire in the art direction as well as the risk the art direction took in some of the armors. There are some very funny and interesting looks, like the hats. I have not played many games where you can absolutely be in joy with a Hobbit wearing one of those pointy tall hats, it fills me with joy to see some of the things people can create with the clothing system that is placed , which is almost limitless in how you can make your character aesthetically pleasing. When you see high level armors, you know "woah , they are high level" and that really is a great feeling when you reach some of those nice "trophy" pieces. I could careless what a game likeAoC models are doing, I'm not even playing the game, nore WAr, both games have something different, but for me , LotrO just get's it done, and that is all that matter. People continu to ressurrect things dicussed over 2 years ago, and they always come to the same conclusion, it is all opinion. |

Originally posted by solareus And we are glad you are willing to give yours. Now, I have to question this. Can you possibly show me ANY Tolkien based drawing by any of the famous artists in the past who decided it was a good idea to put an eye patch on an Elf? The problems stem from lore breaking art, armor that does not look like armor but body suits and spandex (even the metal based armors). The way the characters stand when not in motion, the from the hip running animations, the Hobbit full diaper baby run.. We all agree the landscapes are awesome. But the models when placed into this beautiful world look 2d and unrealistic. This is what disappoints many players. |

I think what is being talked about here is a lot of the lower level armour. I agree, some of that stuff is just horrible and does look VERY stupid. But still, when my LM runs around I can't stand how the robes just stick to my legs, there is NO flowing motion to them at all. So while I agree that there is more than enough room for imporvement I wouldn't say it's horrible either. |

Just for once I would like to see an mmo where characters actualy sheath their weapons or put them in a holster instead of just stick it on the side or back like its a magnet. I especialy hate it when they dont put the weapons away at all and just run around like a crazy idiot with the weapons sticking out in front of them. |
