For those thinking of playing Eve, or returning to Eve, and really want to play in 0.0 and get into those big battles.....forget it. Big Massive Huge Battles For Domination Of Known Space can't happen because the server can't handle them. If you like jumping into a system with a hundred of your follow alliance mates to blast a path into the system for the big SuperCap to follow......forget it, ain't going to happen. What you get is looking at a frozen screen as you wait desperately for the grid to load, only to find out you died an hour ago and your clone is waiting for you.

Played for three years, fought all over EVE from Geminate to Delve to Great Wildlands to Vale to Tribute. Been in many a massive battle and not a single one worked as CCP advertise. Should sue for false advertisement, but the Icelandic coin ain't worth much at present.

They SAY they have committed to fixing the problem. If they do I'll be back so fast the passage will blow out several stars, but DON'T PLAY THIS GAME TILL THEY FIX IT!!

First, buy a decent  computer.  Second, run the low rez client. Third, turn off everything you are supposed to.  Finally, only run one account.  (and do turn off all the crap on your computer)

As a veteran of EVE you know all this, right?

I've fought in battles as large as 250 vs 250 w/o any lag issues.... what's your problem?

Also, they just announced new tech which has enabled them to upgrade to 64 bit which should improve things even more.

You haven't been in any large fights at all, you are just whining. In the MAX campaign we get loads of very large fights with many capital ships involved and it is laggy but that's the way it is. If you don't want lag go play WoW or some other carebear MMO.

Earlier there were 400 in system and the system wasn't lagging.

"Go back to WoW" is the default fanboy excuse for faulty game mechanics you can't properly argue for...

First, send me the money. Second, duh. Third, double duh. Fanboi, listen up. THE GAME IS NOTHING BUT LAG IN EVERY FIGHT I'VE BEEN IN WITH LARGE AMOUNTS OF PEOPLE.  So take your stupid advice and talk to ya mirror.  I was there with BIG BLUE, I was there with Morsus Mihi,  I've fought in 8MG, 3-FKCZ, C-N4OD, P3EN-E, WH-JCA. Fought large and small battles. I love EVE, I enjoy the corporations I've been in and the alliances I've fought with. I HATE CCP for failing to deliver.

I played the game for a long time. Gone through a couple of computer upgrades, graphic card upgrades to the top of the line, RAM to boot. THE MASSIVE BATTLES DON'T HAPPEN. He who plays the lag best wins. It ain't a fight, it's a nerdfest for fanbois.

So may your computer hang and your ship blow. Let your cable modem fry and your liquid cooler leak. And by the Pixels of Agony, may CCP delete your clone account 2 seconds before your ship goes down in a lagfest.

Yeah.. I agree.. No big battles..  I played for about 2 years and tried my hardest to get into some big fleet battles.  The way it goes is your big fleet goes from sector to sector hunting another big fleet.  That takes about an hour, then when you do meet its a crap-lag-fest, ONLY to see that your fleet is bigger and the other one takes off.  two hours wasted...

And fyi, my pc is balls...  And I have the fastest cable internet my provider has.  Still lag.  But dont get me wrong, love the game for other reasons.. Just no big (fun) space battles.

Everquest 1, Star wars galaxies, City of heroes/villains, Eve, Lord of the rings, Age of Conan

And this is the game's problem, how?

When I was getting into battles large enough that I was suffering from performance problems I quit the game until I could get a computer that was powerful enough to play it properly.

Now, all of the problems you have outlined are no more.

Perhaps you should look to the things within your control rather than blaming the game.  Eh?

Clearly CCP is at fault for not having quantum servers and godcode, it's not like they try to improve the server at all right?  64-bit, Stackless, all vaporware.

I've been in 100 man fights that've been as laggy as 400 man fights.  Lag is what the hardcore players expect, because they know when they try to shove hundreds of players into a small space, they're going to risk lagging under current technology.

It's like when people gripe about lag in mission hubs.  Go run missions for a slightly worse agent where there aren't 1000+ people in the system and surrounding systems.

Do you guys even know how the nodes work in EVE? I have been in fights where there were 600 in local and no lag because the node was reinforced and all fights were concentrated in one system. When the node really starts lagging is when there are fights spread across several systems and the node gets really taxed.

I never said EVE isn't lagless, on the contrary. It took me 20 minutes to load in a pod when I jumped into S-E when Razor took their space back a year and a half ago. There were 1100 people in local and it was hell but once loaded there wasn't that much lag. Sometimes Jita is horrendously laggy with 300 people in it while not lagging half as bad with 800 people in local. People sitting in station doing nothing don't create lag, people fighting outside the stations create lag.

It's a bad system but what else can you do? Implement battlegrounds? Arena's? In WoW performance means everything so nothing will ever be accepted or added to the game that would lag the game even slightly. That's why WoW is always brought up.

i was yesterday in a battle with 600 in local. no lag at all.

a few days ago 800 in local 1 sec lag.

both system reinforced with CCP system. So yes it can be done without lag. Just do not turn brackets on :D (i did once and died in a freeze screen).

You do of course realize you just necroe'd a post from 3 months ago that was before stackless I/O was implemented right?

FALSE

Ever since this past fall when they did some major overhauls to the EVE code and the server side hardware EVE is capable (and has easily hosted) numerous battles of nearly epic proportions. Largest one I have heard was a 600v600 battle. It was not lag free but it was playable. There have been numerous battles with between 300 and 500 ships involved which are very playable.

GAH
necro post... just noticed.

I have to say that Eve's networking genius was a large part of the marvel in this game for me. They continually push the boundaries of what is physically capable. Really world class.

Ironically it is also the reason I stopped playing. As long as Eve continues to try and push the envelope to the absolute maximum that cutting edge science allows, it will continue to overshoot those limits to learn where exactly they are.

Nothing worse than paying to rent a server that lags. Or worse crashes.

I'm aware that over time they will fix and improve any issues that arise, but I'm also aware that they will also continue to repeat this cycle again and again and again.

They can't run a test server to load test the equipment. It has to be done while we are playing. As a long time server host and someone who invests a lot of his dispensable income in computer hardware in pursuit of the highest possible performance I find lag or instability issues immensely frustrating.

Obviously you have to take the good with the bad, I thought I'd unsub and leave it a while to get fixed, and then real life took over and I never got round to re-subbing.
